Corbin Burnes pitches tonight for the Orioles. A legitimate staff, the O's traded two very good prospects in left starter DL Hall, and Infielder Joey Ortiz for him for the final year before he's eligible for free agency. The Yanks saw Ortiz this past weekend, and he hurt them throughout the series, with both the bat and the glove.
Burnes is a legitimate ace starter. In 7 major league seasons, his ERA was 3.39 or better except for his injury-plagues 2nd season in 2018. He pitched mostly in relief for the Brewers in 2017-2019, but entered the rotation for good in 2021, and in his first full season as a starter, led all of MLB with a 2.43 ERA, earning the NL Cy Young Award despite winning just 11 games. In that season, he also led all of MLB in fewest HR/9 innings, most K's per 9 innings and best K/BB ratio. He pitched well enough in 2022 and 2023 to make the All-Star team and finish 7th and 9th in the Cy Young voting in those two seasons. His career ERA is 3.23, his WHIP is a remarkable 1.049. He's allowed less than 7 hits per 9 innings in his career, and his career K/BB ratio is an outstanding 4.23.
This year, in 6 starts, he's been everything the O's were expecting when they traded for him. He's 3-0 with a 2.55 ERA. In 35 1/3 innings, he's allowed 25 hits, 11 runs, 10 earned, 5 HR, 8 BB and K'd 35. He's allowed more than 2 ER in just one of the 6 starts, the "worst" being 3 ER in 5 2/3 inning against the Royals in Kansas City in a game in which he was still the winning pitcher.
Burnes has started just one game against the Yanks in his career before tonight. It was the first 8 innings of the 10 inning no-hitter the Brewers threw against the Yanks on Sept.10th. The Yanks pitching held the Brewers scoreless, then the two teams exchanged runs in the 11th and 2 run rallies in the 12th before Higashioka doubled off of Hoby Milner in the 13th to score ghost runner Everson Pereira with the game winning run. In that start, aside for shutting down the Yankees and no-hitting them for 8 innings, Burnes walked 2 and struck out 7. If I remeber right, he got a lot of soft contact from the Yanks all game long when not whiffing them. He was dominant that day. Not Pedro Martinez dominant, but the Yanks had no clue how to hit him. Given the above, the Yanks' quadruple slash line against Burnes is pointless, but here it is anyway: .000/.077/.000/.077.
Repertoire: Burnes is a cutter-heavy 5-pitch righty. The cutter is so strong that he uses it as his "fastball", pitching "off it" the way Gerrit Cole pitches off his high 90's FB. This year so far, he's using it somewhat less and the curve and slider somewhat more. Pitch mix so far this season: Cutter averaging 95 about 45% of the time, curve at 80 about 24% of the time, slider 88 about 14% of the time, change 89 about 10% of the time and a FB 96 or so that he usese about 5-6 times a game.

Playing the "name game" with Burnes... There have been 24 major league players with the last name "Burns", and three with the last name "Byrnes", but Corbin is the one and only Burnes in MLB history.

The Yanks send out Luis Gil to oppose Burnes to try to avoid losing the first three games of this series. Gil still has electric stuff, and very poor command of it. Two starts ago, against the Rays, he was able to keep the walks in check, and turned in his best start of the season. Last time out against the Brewers, he held the walks to two, but was missing in the middle of the zone, so the Brewers knocked him around for 6 hits, 2 HR and 5 ER in 5 innings. Those were the first and second HRs he's allowed this year. He has to find the "happy medium" between walking the ballpark and grooving his FB and change to get hit.
In 5 starts, Gil is 1-1 with a 4.01 ERA. In 24 2/3 innings he's allowed 14 hits, 12 runs, 11 earned, 2 HR, 19 BB and 35 K. Gil's made just one start against the O's, his first MLB start in 2021, and he dominated them almost as well as Burnes dominated in his one start against Yanks late last year. Gil went six innings, still tied for his longest MLB appearance. He threw 6 shutoout innings, giving up just 4 hits and 1 BB and striking out 6. The O's quadruple slash line against Gil is .182/.217/.182/.399

Thanks for starting the game thread, qwik! Congrats on your first one! Hopefully you will bring us some luck! I'd like to say it can't get worse, but that's not necessarily true. I hope it's good luck, too, kaybli.

Yesterday, the Yanks offense got shut down again, but not shut out this time, losing to the O's 4-2. The Red Sox whitewashed the Giants, 4-0. Rookie Cooper Criswell went the first five, and four relievers also put up nothing but zeroes. They allowed the weak Giants offense just 4 hits and a BB while striking out 10. The Royals overcame having to face Jose Berrios and beat the Blue Jays 4-1 behind their own ace, Cole Ragans. The Brewers waxed the Rays 8-2 in Milwaukee. That's the Rays 7th lost in their last 9 games. As of this morning, the O's lead the Yanks by a game, the Sox are just 1 1/2 behind the Yanks in 3rd, 2 1/2 games out of first. The Jays and Rays lost ground to the O's and Sox but not the Yanks. The Jays stand 5 out of 1st and 4 back of the Yanks, while the Rays are 1 game further back of both.
Elsewhere in the AL East today:
The Brewers beat the Rays 7-1 in Milwaukee, Rea threw 6 shutout innings. The Royals beat the Jays again, 6-1, Seth Lugo threw 7 innings of 2-hit, 1-run ball, striking out 8. The Giants and Red Sox play the 2nd game of their series in Fenway, Kutter Crawford vs. Daulton Jefferies, who is making his 2nd start of the season. He got nuked in his 1st start on March 30th, giving up 9 runs in just two innings to the Padres in San Diego. Going into tonight's games, the Yanks, O's and Sox are another half game up on the Jays and Rays.

Foul tips a cutter for strike 2. Misses a 96 cutter going just outside, swing on and missed for the K.
They switched my gamecast from Prime to the Orioles' cast at the last second, but it's still delayed 2-3 pitches.

Burnes misses with 3 cutters to fall behind 3-0. Cutter on the outside corner, 3-1. Cutter above middle fouled, 3-2. Cutter in almost the same spot, hit hard past Westburg into to right center for a 1 out single.
Judge up.

Cutter low to Judge, 1-0 Burnes' cutter sitting at 96 so far. Throws over Throws the slider dropping just below the knees, Judge swings over, 1-1 A slider in the zone low/away, swung on and missed, 1-2 Late sharp break on that slider 2nd throw over Judge takes his timeout Slider on the corner low/away, Judge spoils. Chases a bad slider diving way low for the K. Judge hasn't been able to adjust to sliders yet this season. 2 down.
