Change low on the outside corner swung on and missed, 0-1 Fb low 1-1 Change tails outside 2-1 Change on the low outside corner again, and again swung on and missed, 2-2 Another nifty change, this one outer half but lower, and Greene swings over it for the K, inning over.
11 pitch 1-2-3 for Weaver and at 15 pitches total, he's good to go to the 8th.
I know it's not the same pitching in relief and as a starter, but the difference in command between Weaver and Schmidt allows Weaver to attack hitters and be much more efficient.
It's a long season and I'm sure Weaver will go through a slump or two, but Weaver has turned himself into an enormous multi-inning reliever weapon for the Yanks. When they picked him up late last year, I had no idea what they wanted with him. I was wrong.
Bottom 7, 5-3 Yanks
Soto-Judge-Verdugo for the Yanks in the 7th. Now would be a good time to put this game away.

Holton stays in to pitch to the two lefties and Judge. Soto has never faced him before. Judge is 1-1, a single Verdugo has never faced him either.

Sinker at the very bottom, doesn't get the Soto-call, 0-1 Slider low and outside, 1-1 Sinker low, 2-1 Sinker waist high inner 3rd, but Soto is late and under, pops it to Greene in left, moves over toward the line and catches, 1 down.

Judge guesses FB, gets a change well low and swings early and over. Change almost bounced, 1-1 Judge takes his timeout, has something in his eye, it looks like Now he's ready... Cutter inside, 2-1 Cutter above the waist, near the corner inside, swung under, 2-2 Change low and outside but close, Judge waits, then spoils

Playing the "name game" with Mize.... He's the 2nd player with the last name Mize in MLB; the first was the Hall of Fame slugger Johnny "Big Jawn" Mize, who's in the top 100 in MLB history in career BAVG, HR and RBI and in the top 20 all-time in slugging and OPS. He was a key backup/bench player on the famous 1949-1953 Yankees, the only team in MLB history to win 5 World Series in a row. Only those Yankee teams could have Johnny Mize as a bench player (granted ages 36-40).  A vastly underrated Hall of Famer with a 158 OPS+ for his career, who lost over three full seasons to WWII between the ages of 29 and 33 - generally considered a baseball player's prime.  After returning from the war, he led all of baseball in 1946 with 51 homers, 138 RBIs, and 137 runs. And, Mize wasn't legging out any hits, despite the sobriquet of "The Big Cat," due to a devastating leg injury he suffered in 1934.  Teammates said Mize never swung at a bad pitch (Juan Soto like).  Mize held the single-season home run record for the Cardinals until it was broken by Mark "I Plead The Fifth" McGwire in 1998.  When he retired after the 1953 season, Mize’s 359 career home runs ranked sixth all-time. He also had a .312 career batting average, .397 on-base percentage, 2,011 hits, and 1,337 RBIs over 15 major-league seasons. Altogether, Mize had won five World Series titles, been selected for 10 all-star games, won a batting title, and finished in the top five of the MVP voting four times, including two runner-up finishes. You're darn tootin' Rizz. A favorite of the late great MrG. When he retired in 1953 the only players who had more HRs were Babe, Foxx, Ott, Lou, Williams and Joe D (who had two more.) Big Cat was in the Top Ten in HRs until 1961, when Mantle and Mathews bumped him out. A few years back I had reason to spend a few nights in Clemson SC. It was about a one-hour drive from there to Demorest GA, where Johnny Mize was born and where he died. There is an interesting museum there on the campus of Piedmont University containing memorabilia he collected during his career. He was that rare player who collected baseball artifacts. Stuff from Babe Ruth (who married Mize's cousin Clare Hodgson) and Joe D. and Dizzy Dean and Pepper Martin and Mel Ott and Ty Cobb (who was also a distant cousin) and many others. Worth a stop on the very off-chance you find yourself in northeastern Georgia. Just making a cameo appearance today comrades. Today is our annual Derby Day Julep Jamboree, so I need to be bartender for a small gathering of freeloaders. In fact I'm test driving a Mint Julep as I speak. Need to make sure they're worthy of our guests. Seems okay so far.

Tries to scissors him by humping up on the FB, but flies open and misses up and away, 3-2 FB on the backdoor thigh high at 92, marginal but called strike 3 anyway. Judge's frustration boils over and he stupidly gets himself ejected on a pitch that was probably a strike. Defense won't be hurt with Grisham, but it might be very costly if the Tigers tie it up or take the lead. It's true Kelly had to reach across the plate and that usually doesn't get called, but that pitch was 10-20$ on Gameday

Verdugo takes a slider for a strike, then fouls one off the HP ump, bringing cheers from the crowd. Sinker high, slider outside and it's 2-2 FB way above the inner half, Verdugo ducks, but it wasn't close to him. 3-2 FB above the waist, inside corner, swung under for the K.
Yanks 2-3-4 goes 1-2-3 on 17 pitches.
Top 8, 5-3 Yanks. I'm assuming Weaver will start the 8th, but might not finish it if he runs into trouble.

Yes it was a borderline strike, but that ump is a jerk for ejecting Judge.

“Are you kidding me? That was bullshit.”
That’s what I got…
I also saw the ump use the word bullshit when Nudge confronted him after the ejection…

Canha, then Perez and Carpenter for the Tigers. FB misses the outside corner clean, 2-3 inches, called strike 1 anyway. Cutter outside, 1-1 FB outside 2-1 Another Fb outside 3-1, and he should've walked. Cutter in the middle, taken, 3-2
