Underway in the 2nd. Canes put it in, get a shot, but the Rangers clear out, right back in. Wemberg skates it the length of the ice, gets a shot on goal. Rangers keep it in, Schneider's shot is blocked. Canes put it in, D'Angelo's shot from the middle near the blue line is smothered by Igor, who holds it for a faceoff.

I thought a bad lunge. Announcers said do or die OK, just turned it on to see the Rays celebrate and hear the Mets' announcers' lament. Naces' shot turned from the left point turned away.

Canes pin the Rangers in, and Trouba takes a penalty for cross-checking. Early PP for the Canes in the 2nd period.

Game Called. Yankees Win. OK, cool with me. I'll stop my Rangers PBP and just watch while I do my usual game-ending stuff.

Yanks win the rain-shortened game, 5-3, and complete the sweep of an improved Tigers' team. Yanks finally get to 10 over .500 for the first time this season at 23-13. They had bounced off of 9 games over three times before. Looks like the O's and Sox will win their games, the Rays have just won theirs in 10 innings. Jays and Nats tied at 8, top 7 in Washington.
If the Jays win and the other scores hold, no blood for anyone in the East, as all 5 teams will win.
Yanks will stay 1 games behind the O's, 3 1/2 up on the Sox, and 5 1/2 up on the Jays and Rays.

3rd star of the game: Cortes for his solid start, left the game with a shutout through 6 1/3, but Hamilton allowed both inherited runners to score to tie the game. 2nd star of the game: Judge for his HR in the 1st off of Skubal that got the Yanks out in front, a double and a walk. 1st star of the game: Not too obvious, is it? Soto's game breaking 3 run double in the 7th, answering the Tigers right after they tied the game in th top of the inning. Where would this team be without him so far this year? Probably floundering near .500 with the Rays and Jays.
Honorable mention Trevino and Cabrera with the professional hitting against Skubal for the 2nd run, Trevino's hit and run single setting up Cabrera was a thing of beauty. Also good work by Gonzalez and Santana picking up Hamilton.

After the off day Monday, the Astros come in to the Stadium next, an early wrap to the season's series, and will be looking for revenge after the Yanks' season-opening four-game sweep in Houston.
Game 1 is 7:07 pm on Tuesday on YES. Justin Verlander makes his 4th start since coming off the IL, and he's still a tough customer, 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in 17 innings. Luis Gil goes for the Yanks. Game 2 is 7:07 on Wednesday, unfortunately on Prime Delayed Video, so I'll be 3-4 pitches behind as usual in that situation. Rookie Spencer Arrighetti makes his 5th start for the Astros. He's struggled so far: 0-3 with an 8.27 ERA, 22 hits and 10 BB in 16 1/3 innings. Carlos Rodon tries to bounce back from his rough outing against the O's in game 4 of the series at Camden Yards. Game 3 is Thursday at the odd starting time of 5:05 pm on YES. Ronel Blanco, a surprise starter this year forced on the Astros due to multiple injuries to their projected rotation, is pitching brilliantly for them and may have saved their season. He's 3-0 with an ERA of 2.09, and has allowed just 15 hits in 38 2/3 innings so far, a ridiculously low hits per 9 innings of 3.49. His change must be a wipeout, his FB is just 93-5 and he throws the change 1/3 of the time. Marcus Stroman goes for the Yanks, looking to regain his command and go 6 innings again, something he hasn't done in a month I think.
So, everyone enjoy the off-day, and I'll see you all back here Tuesday evening.

a bit surprised to see hinch concede w one inning to go. conditions must have been really terrible for the umps to bring out the ground krewe at that point.
broom time. we'll take the series sweep. 1st time since early april (4 game 4/6-9) that we put together more than 2 wins in a row. hit our highwater mark of 10 games over .500. next stop 15. orioles beating the reds so we won't gain ground there.
great start by the nasty one. 9Ks. out pitched one of the best in baseball at the moment. 2nd time this week - gil out pitched burnes wednesday. bullpen did allow 2 inherited runners.
obviously soto & judge were the offensive stars. always have a feeling w soto that he'd come through in that spot. a thoroughly professional hitter. and maybe not 100% but judge is getting there. .355 w 3 HR 7 RBI last 9 games. the trevino/cabrera tag team in the 2nd was big as well. only volpe didn't take part in the hit parade.
get to enjoy the day off before the astros come in tuesday.
