As I read articles pertaining to Red Sox trading Verdugo to Yankees, Red Sox was not expecting Verdugo to provide any degree of competence. They were hoping to get money off their hands and to watch Verdugo disrupt the Yankees' chemistry. From what I can see it's been anything but that. Yankees might not have him for long, but he's been a surprisingly great addition I wasn't expecting. It turns out, Red Sox was the problem. They never maximized Verdugo. They made their most hated rival that much better.

Ronel Blanco, signed as a free agent from the Dominican Republic in 2016 (as an adult; he was already 23 when they signed him) goes for the Astros. Blanco worked his way through the Astros system slowly and unspectacularly, finally reaching AAA in 2019 and staying there for 2021-2-3 without ever doing anything special. The Astros brought him up for a short time in 2022 and he pitched poorly. They brought him up against last year, and again, he didn't pitch particularly well: in 10 relief appearances and 7 starts he was 2-1 with a 5.02 ERA.
The Astros had multiple injuries to their rotation to deal with, so they brought him up for his first start and he threw a no-hitter against the Jays, walking 2 and striking out 7. He stayed in the rotation and has continued to pitch very well. In 6 starts, he's 3-0 with an ERA of 2.09. He's pitched 38 2/3 innings, going at least 5 2/3 innings in each start. He's allowed just 21 hits (even taking out the no-hitter, that's still just 21 hits in 29 2/3 innings, very very good h/9), 9 runs, all earned, 4 HR, 16 BB with 36 K. He has allowed 3 runs or more in just one start, his last one against the Mariners on May 3rd. Blanco has 97 innings total in his three MLB seasons, but he's never faced the Yankees before.
Repertoire: Blanco has made one important change to his pitch mix this year, he's using the slider nearly 50% less than he did in his first two seasons, and he's more than tripled the use of his changeup; it must be a terrific change-up. So far this year, in less than 600 pitches, Blanco's been a 4-pitch righty: FB averaging 93.7 that he's throwing 38% of the time, change 85-6 about 32% of the time, slider 87 about 27% of the time, and an occasional curve at 79-80 that he uses 3-4 times a game.

The Yanks send Marcus Stroman out to oppose Blanco. Stroman started the season with back to back outings of 6 innings without allowing an earned run, but has been very inconsistent since those two games. In his last five games, Stroman is 1-1, but has an ERA of 5.04, and has allowed 26 hits, 5 HR and 17 (!!!) walks in 25 innings; his WHIP in the 5 games is a dreadful 1.720. He managed to dance around almost all the baserunners in his last start against a weak-hitting Tigers' lineup, but must do better going forward.
Stroman has started 6 games vs. Houston in his career. He's 3-1 with an excellent ERA of 2.50. In 36 innings, he's allowed 31 hits, 15 runs, just 10 earned, just 2 HR, 9 BB with 38 K. His WHIP against them is 1.25, pretty good considering they've been one of the best teams in MLB the last seven seasons. His last start against the Astros was Opening Day this season, and it was a good one: 6 innings, 4 hits, 3 runs, none earned (a throwing error by Cabrera at 3rd set up a 2 run rally for the Astros in the 2nd, and Volpe's errant relay on an attempted DP ball in the 5th scored the 3rd run off Stroman), 0 HR, 2 BB and 4 K. The Yanks rallied with 3 in the 7th on home runs by Cabrera to tie the game and Soto to give them the lead and held on to win 5-3, earning the W for Stroman. Despite appearing in both the 2015 and 2016 playoffs for the Jays, Stroman has never faced the Astros in the postseason.

Yesterday, the Yanks hammered the Astros again, 9-4. The O's outfought the Nationals in 12 innings, scoring 2 in the top of the 12th on a single and a wild pitch. The Nats got one back on a leadoff double, but reliever Jacob Webb straightened things out with a strikeout and flyout, before Joey Meneses hit a deep fly to McKenna a step in front of the track in right to end things. The White Sox ended the Rays' 5 game winning streak with a 4-1 win. The Jays and Chris Bassitt beat the Phils 5-3. Chris Sale and two relievers piled up 13 K's with just one walk as the Braves shutout the Red Sox 5-0.
All the other East teams are off today, so the Yanks will either lose 1/2 game to all four or gain 1/2 game on all four.
Right now, the Yanks are still tied with the O's for first in the division. Both teams are 12 games over, but the Yanks having played two more games so far, the O's are percentage points ahead (.667 to .658, if you must know). Both teams have been hot lately. The O's have won 7 of 9 and the Yanks have won 5 in a row since the O's took 3 of 4 from them last week, and the other 3 teams have lost ground or stayed pretty much where they were. The Sox are in 3rd, 5 1/2 games back, the Rays are behind them in 4th, 6 games back, and the Jays are in the baseman, 7 1/2 out of 1st.

Not sure how their going to play that out…

Blanco will be a stiff test. He's been consistently solid in each start since throwing 15 scoreless innings in his first 2 starts (including a no-hitter on April Fools Day). Since then he's allowed 2, 2, 2, and 3 runs in 6, 6, 5.2, and 6 innings. Law of averages says he's due for a clinker, so maybe we can hand it to him.
