I can't see where he's hurting the team at third base...Therefore, my feeling is that the fielding stats are imperfect. Most stats are somewhat imperfect. For instance, we put so much stock into adding OBP and SLG to determine the best hitters when OBP is acquired by a collection of different skills and OBP and SLG have nothing to do with each other...

Admittedly, that is probably the hardest metric in all of spirts to measure. Nevertheless,it’s one I like to look at when considering the value I place on a player as it gives me a sense of how the player is performing relative to everyone else/quote] are those metrics separable to show what phase is lacking?...hands (glove work), throwing, or range? something else?

I took a look at the information provide by FanGraphs Utah. Here is what I found: First, this is their "rating" of his abilities. Unfortunately the columns won't align here. I tried to fix them, we'll see how they format. We do see his arm rated at 70 (out of a possible 80), which makes sense to me. Hit GamePower RawPower Speed Field Throws Future Value 45 55 45 55 60 / 60 55 / 50 45 /55 70 / 70 60The Advanced fielding charts show: Season Team Pos Inn rSB rGDP rARM rGFP rPM DRS BIZ Plays RZR OOZ CPP RPP TZL FSR ARM DPR RngR ErrR UZR UZR/150 2017 Yankees 3B 9.0 0 0 0 0 1 1 1.000 0 0.1 0.0 0.1 20.3 2018 Yankees 3B 620.0 -1 -2 -10 -13 132 82 .621 15 -0.4 -6.8 0.4 -6.8 -22.0 Total - - - 3B 629.0 -1 -2 -10 -13 133 83 .624 15 -0.4 -6.7 0.4 -6.6 -21.1A player who has limited range, good hands and a strong arm. I can live with that description. He never makes the great play, the impossible play that we sometimes see the greats find a way to make, nor the play with a remote or unlikely chance of being made. I can live with that based off what I've seen so far. Is the sample large enough? Is there a chance for improvement? Those are the important questions when we look at a 23-year old. He's putting in the work, so yeah. Perhaps he can improve with more work. But how much??? Okay, so the attempt to fix the formatting didn't work, but if you want a clean look at the charts, go here: www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=15878&position=3B

Sometimes it's hard to judge what a different third baseman might have done on a ball that gets by the one you're watching...I like what I've seen of Andujar myself...but the numbers are telling us something. I just don't know how much the numbers really know...We used to see this with Cano at 2nd base, too... His defensive metrics told us he wasn't that good, but he made some darned good plays... I thought some of these fielding stats were more estimates and predicitons than facts. When you watch Andujar play third, I don't see a great fielder but is he really a liability? Compared to his peers?? Apparently yes. Yankees know this. Hopefully, there is a GM or 2 who project the bat to be AS quality and believe he can improve

Compared to his peers?? Apparently yes. Yankees know this. Hopefully, there is a GM or 2 who project the bat to be AS quality and believe he can become an adequate 3b. Love the kid but.....If he has to be packaged to bring back a stud pitcher, by all means do so/quote]

If he's part of a package for a true ace quality pitcher, I'll help him pack...I do enjoy seeing him play, but I'll enjoy another ace in the rotation, too...

No, not all of the above. The arm is fine (in fact way more than fine). The hands are fine. The handling of the routine play is fine and the slightly tougher than routine is not embarrassing. The arm makes up for some of his short-comings which allows a not-so-bad ability to start the DP. It's those plays that are game-changers that he can't make. The ones that take hits away and rob doubles from going down the line...I can also feel as though he's not been tested much on bunts and what I've seen has been a mixture of "okay" and poor. Those sort of things show up in the big games, in big moments when an extra base runner can make or break a pitching duel... All of that said, Wade Boggs came to majors fielding 3B very poorly. By the end of his career he became slightly better than average through hard work. It's a bit up to Andujar's physical gifts and bit up to his work ethic if he gets better in the future. The work ethic is there. Physically, he seems to be athletic enough to improve...And if he winds up being a 1B-DH type with fine stinging bat that can hit .300 with some pop...is that the worst thing in the world? No... But...going back to the stud pitcher...if we can get one with Andujar in the package, I would do it. Gleyber could go in a similar deal without upsetting me. Frazier too...I'm open to trading any one that can give us that stud, as long as the overall package is reasonable...

Oh, okay. I thought you were answering Utah. He's the one that's 90 years old, but I'm the one with the comprehension issue. Go figure... (:
Oh well, it gave me a change to review Andujar a bit more as a player...No harm done...except that I spent more time on the computer as it gets hotter outside (Should be about 100 today here)...Funny, I was working on something in my garage last night at about 11:15 and the thermometer in there read 96. The door had been down and the evening breeze hadn't cooled if off in there. Wasn't that bad, really...Getting more an more accustomed to this desert weather...
