The NBA sure knows where its bread is buttered.

All the bad press the NBA has been getting over this China business, this is not the type of bad luck they were looking for with their much hyped rookie.

Feels like I should bump this thread. CHI you're a Sixers fan right? Did you see Ben Simmons' performance in the 7 game series against the Hawks? I've never seen such a disappearing act on the offensive end.

I've never seen such a disappearing act on the offensive end. It's strange, a guard that won't shoot and is afraid to have the ball in his hands late in games because he doesn't want to go to the foul line. Simmons had 13 assists and just 2 turnovers but taking only 4 shoots is absurd, especially in today's NBA that is so guard heavy. I think he needs professional help, like a good shrink or something. Of course there wouldn't have been a game 7 if the Sixers could have held on to a 18 point lead in game 4 and a 26 point lead in game 5, both of which they lost!

The worst was when he had the wide open dunk and passed it off. He definitely needs a visit to Jwild. Sorry for your team's loss Chi. My Knicks didn't do much better against the Hawks. Trae Young pisses me off. I'm definitely supporting the Bucks in the Eastern Conference Finals.

I've pretty much divorced myself from the NBA in recent years, but this story is dominating the sports talk in Philly, as you might expect. Ben Simmons has been the object of mystery for years, but this performance will almost certainly be the last straw if the 76ers can find someone to take him.
He was 15-45 from the foul line against Atlanta, and for the playoffs overall shot 34.2 percent from the line, the worst mark in the history of the NBA. His reluctance to shoot has clearly moved into pathological territory.
Embiid and even Doc Rivers have been conspicuously non-supportive this morning.
As for the Hawks-- talk about a loser franchise-- this is only the second time in the past 50 years that they have made it to the conference finals. The only other time was 2016. Before that, you have to go back to the 1969-70 squad, which was swept in the Western Conference finals by the Chamberlin-West-Baylor Lakers. Those Hawks had two HOFers-- player-coach Richie Guerin and center Walt "Big Bells" Bellamy. Other key players were "Super Lou" Hudson, "Jumpin' Joe" Caldwell and Butch Beard. As you can see, nicknames were popular then.
I'd be surprised if many here recall those guys.
The last time the Hawks were in the finals was 1961, when they were still playing in St. Louis. Their last championship was 1958-59, led by Rizzuto's man Bob Pettit. More proof that you're old is if you remember when the Hawks were consistently a playoff contender.

Your average Joe off the streets could easily shoot better than that.
What is it about the NBA that has you turned off pipps?

What is it about the NBA that has you turned off pipps? Hey Kaybli -- to be honest, what turned me away was the league's emphasis on political issues. I got tired of Popovich and Kerr injecting their angry politics into everything. The business with China was more or less the cherry on top. But it was gradual -- I preferred the more team-oriented passing game, the tighter more physical defenses I grew up with. I was an avid NBA fan for probably 50 years. There were only eight teams -96 players -- in the whole league when I started following it. It was easy to literally know who every player in the league was. Hockey only six teams; they played each other 14 times a year, so it got very personal. Actually I've cut out not just the NBA, but the NFL and NHL as well in recent years. Just can't get as interested. But I retain fond memories of what they were. I don't miss them, and they don't miss me!

Bill Bridges, who started at F for some great Lakers teams in the early 70s, and former UCLA standout G Walt Hazzard. Butch Beard played on the 1975 champion Warriors.

For me, I used to follow the Knicks religiously in the 90s but my interest faded as they started to become terrible. What about you rizzuto, why did you stop following the NBA?

Kaybli, I never knew or cared about whatever political views Red Auerbach or Wilt Chamberlin or Michael Jordan or Larry Bird or Pat Riley or Magic Johnson had. It wasn't an issue.
Bill Russell, who would be among my favorite athletes of all time, had well-understood political opinions, but at least as a player and coach or even a broadcaster, he didn't make nasty personal attacks on people he disagreed with. You knew where he was coming from, but he was still someone who you felt sought moral consensus rather than division.
Well, I guess I've gone as much into that topic as I need to! But you're right, politics can suck most of the joy out of life.

Or out of a baseball forum. All it takes is one or two screamers…
