Holmes gives up some of the cheapest hits.

Polanco pinch hits for Urias, he's never faced Holmes before, somehow. Sinker into the top of the zone in the middle, 0-1 Sinker outside 1-1 Sinker further outside at 98, 2-1 Swings over a 97 sinker diving just below the knees, inner half, 2-2 One more good sinker, CLay. Arrggghh Sinker outside, Polanco chases, hits a flare over 3rd, and it lands just fair behind 3rd, a single. Garver to 2nd with 2 down.
France up. He's 1-5 vs. Holmes with a RBI and 2 K's.

Let's hope Gil does end up in the bullpen when Cole returns. If no injuries occurs, I suspect it comes down to Schmidt or Gil It's going to be hard to take him out with the way he's pitching. Yeah, I doubt he’s still considered a number 6 starter.

France takes a sinker high, 1-0 Slider thigh high, outside corner, rolled over to Volpe, throws to Torres for the force, game over! Yanks win 5-0, and very much relieving split after blowing the 1st game and getting shut down by Woo in the 2nd game.
Yanks get back to 18 games over .500 for the 2nd time this season at 35-17, and for the moment move 3 1/2 up on the O's, pending their game in Chicago against the White Sox this evening.

Yanks earn a split, which after the way the first two games went, I'm more than happy with.
Judge is absolutely RAKING right now. He's pacing 45+ HRs and 50+ doubles as we approach the 1/3 point of the season. Not sure who gets sent to the pen when Cole comes back. Can't see it being Gil the way he's pitching. Nice problem to have.
On to the next one...

3rd star of the game: Stanton for the 2nd inning HR that gave the Yanks the early lead. 2nd star: Judge, for the tack on HR in the 3rd and a bullet RBI double in the middle of the 3rd run rally, setting up Verdugo and Rizzo for the professional sac flies for extra tack on runs that provided cushion for Burdi and Holmes. 1st star: Gil, for his 5th straight brilliant start. The M's battled him hard in a couple of innings, but he still made it through 6 1/3 shutout innings, just 1 hit and 2 BB allowed and struck out 8 more.
Gil has now won 5 in row, tied for 2nd in the AL with 6 wins, is 3rd in the league with an ERA of 2.11 and is 5th in K's with 70.

Yanks gain a 1/2 game on both the Red Sox and Rays, who have the day off, now lead them by 8 and 9 1/2, respectively. Temporarily gain a 1/2 game vs. the O's and Jays, pending their games this evening in Chicago and Detroit.
Yanks have won 2 in a row again, and are 15-4 in their last 19. They avoid losing their first series since the O's took 3 of 4 from them in Camden Yards 3 weeks ago.

Gil's been quite the revelation. Would be a shame if he were dropped from the rotation when Cole comes back, but that's the scuttlebutt.
