What an embarrassing performance by Cortes. I'd leave him in there to give the Yankees some more outs. The trouble is that he might allow more runs than outs. Nestor has been a real feel good story. He wax never supposed to be as good as he was/is. At some point the surprise journey will end… I've already put this one in the loss column. |

Siri gets a slider down and in, fouls it.
A slider waist high, inner 3rd, popped out of play near the Yankees' dugouot
Slider bounced outside, great backhand stab, but it doesn't matter, no one on base
Slider misses outside near the bottom, 2-2
Sinker backs well inside, Siri chases and misses under it, K, inning over.
Bottom 5, 6-0 Rays.
Verdugo, Volpe and Grisham for the Yanks in the 5th.

Grisham takes a FB on the corner away, called a ball for no good reason, 80% strike on Gameday
Takes a 96 FB at the top of the zone in the middle, 1-1
A splitter above middle is rolled over to Paredes for the 3rd out.
Top 6, 6-0 Rays.
7 pitch 1-2-3 for Bradley and 75 through 5.
7-8-9 for the Rays: Caballero, Walls and Jackson in the 6th.

Pardon me, Paulie, but that analyis is both boiler-plate and almost totally irrelevant to their situation the last five weeks and today.
Nestor gave up just 1 run in the first three innings.
Yanks had men in scoring positionin the first two innings, couldn't do a damn thing against a very capable pitcher.
Then the roof caved in.
The following problems won't go away until they do: they have multiple hitters in the lineup who are probably finished/so screwed up they can't contribute: DJ, Volpe, Verdugo. They have two pitchers in the rotation who have inadequate stuff/command: Stroman, and Rodon, and other, Cortes, who's hit and miss depending on whether he has command and his good stuff that day. The bullpen has a shaky closer and is short 1 or 2 power arms.
This team is 9-18 in 27 games on MERIT, or lack of merit.

Caballero falls behind 0-2, works it back to 2-2, then chases a FB just above the outer 3rd for the K.
Meanwhile, Boone wastes Tonkin chasing a 6 run deficit.
