I know what they're talking about...a hard hit ball up the middle that got by him. Wasn't an "easy" play. Gosh...if only Rodon hadn't given up the HR to Jung...or Chisholm hadn't held up at 3rd when he could've easily scored...or Soto didn't overslide the bag when he was safe at 2nd...or... I blame Verdugo for everything. Other posters blame guys they don't like. The loss last night was a real team effort. There were enough low points to make most fans unhappy. Wins and losses are usually a team effort but, as you said, that doesn't stop the finger pointing...whether it's a player, Boone or Cashman. The play last night, which wasn't made, was apparently seen by some as "routine". Fact is, it wasn't much different than the play he made to end Monday's game, which was described as "spectacular". Guess the difference between a "spectacular" play and a "routine" play is in the biased eye of the behold

Guess the difference between a "spectacular" play and a "routine" play is in the biased eye of the behold Actually, the play last night was slightly more difficult, at least by the numbers. The grounder Semien hit on Monday was 85.7 mph, and an XBA (if you believe in XBA) of .450. The grounder Jung hit for the RBI single in the 8th last night was 94.0 with an XBA of .510. What I think people are looking at when they say they think Torres should've had it is that when it went under him, his glove was just over the ball as it went by, so that if he was able to come up with it, they'd have had a force at 2nd, (and maybe a double play, though I think it unlikely) and then the sac fly that scored Semien becomes the 3rd out. I don't know if Holmes pitches any better with a 2-run lead rather than the 1-run lead he came in with, but assuming the fallacy of the predetermined outcome, it wouldn't have mattered anyway; the Yanks would've lost 6-4 instead of 7-4.

People can look at whatever they want, in slo-mo, and come up with their own biased conclusions. If Gleyber had made the play as a force at 2nd it would've been described as "spectacular", not "routine". Had he started an inning ending DP with that play it would've gone down as a web gem, replayed and viewed repeatedly by fans around the league.

The other side of the coin is that in a couple of games earlier in the season the Yankees made some excellent field plays that bailed out Holmes. Gleyber's play at the end of Monday's game saved him. Didn't see much re that in that game thread, but some seemed to hold him somewhat responsible for last night's debacle. I didn't read this whole thread, so I don't know what was said or suggested. But, unless I was watching a different Yankee game I didn't see Torres do anything wrong.
In my opinion, Holmes lost that game, plain and simple. He came into the game in a fresh inning with no runners on base, and he failed to get 3 outs despite getting a couple of generous strike calls from the home-plate umpire.
