The Red Sox send righty Brayan Bello to the mound to avoid losing three in a row for the Yanks. He's started twice against the Yanks this season, the 2nd time in late July, so again, we don't need to go over the backstory. He's pitched well since then; in 8 starts, he's 3-2 with a 3.47 ERA. In his last start he pitched a solid 5+ innings against the Orioles and got a win. On the season, Bello is 13-7 with a 4.70 ERA in 27 starts. He's thrown 147 1/3 innings, allowing 146 hits, 80 runs, 77 earned, 19 HR and 58 walks, with 140 strikeouts. His WHIP for the season is a sub-par 1.385. This is Bello's 8th career start against the Yanks, and he's pitched very well against them, although not so well this year. In his career, he's 2-3 against the Yanks with a 2.66 ERS. In 40 2/3 innings, he's given up 36 hits, 17 runs, 12 earned, just 2 HR, and 14 BB with 34 K's. His WHIP against the Yanks is 1.230, and the team quadruple slash line against Bello is .231/.292/.333/.626. This year, the Yanks caught up to Bello a bit. He pitched poorly against them in a series at Fenway in mid-June, giving up 6 hits and 5 runs (4 earned) in 4 2/3 innings in an 8-1 rout by the Yanks of the Red Sox. Seven weeks later, in late July in a game at the Stadium, Bello went 5 innings, game up 5 hits, 3 runs (earned), 1 HR, and 2 BB, with K. He left when the game was tied at 3, and the Sox fell behind 7-4 and came back to win 9-7, on one of many blown Clay Holmes saves this year.
Repertoire: Bello is a 4-pitch righty, but of the four, the 4-seamer is used rarely. He was using the main three pitches, sinker, slider and change about 1/3 the time earlier, but has since starting using the sinker somewhat more and the other two somewhat less. The sinker has better than average drop and tail, the slider better than average drop and well above-average break in on lefties and the change gets average drop, and above-average tail. The infrequently used 4-seamer gets worse than average rise and average run. By run values, the sinker is a definite minus, the slider is neutral (it used to be a decent-sized minus, but maybe he's made adjustments with it like Luis Gil and it's an improved pitch), the change is also right about neutral and the 4-seam is now a small plus. His sinker and FB velocity are well above average but the spin is near the bottom of the league (not that important for a sinker; you want it to sink, not "rise", as high spin would produce). His extension is below average as well, but he does get a higher than average chase rate. The average exit velocity is slightly below average, but the barrel rate has come down to just above average. The hard hit rate is above average. His ground ball is over 50%, well above average, and the line drive rate are above average, but the flyball rate well below average and the popup rate is below average. His swinging strike and called strike rates are both better than average, so his CSW of 29.1% is at the back end of the top 20 of 59 qualified MLB starters. Bello's strand rate is below average, but his HR per FB rate and BABIP have been somewhat unlucky this year, and for those reasons, his ERA estimators think his ERA should be a half-run lower than the current 4.70.

Playing the Name Game. This was a poor excuse for a name game both times before, and it still is. There are still 3 other Brayans in MLB history, Bello is the better of the two pitchers, and shortstop defensive whiz Rocchio has more bWAR in less than one full season with a .217 career BAVG than backup catcher Pena had in his 12-year career. As for "Bello"s, Brayan is the only one of those; and there are no "Bellow"s or "Bellows"s. Rob Belloir had last than 200 MLB PA for the Braves in 4 seasons in the 70's. Catcher Edwin Bellorin had all of 13 PA in 3 seasons for the Rockies in the late 00's. Pitcher Valente Bellozo came up and threw a few good games this season without much in the way of stuff, but the air is out of that balloon now. And that's it in the 'Bello's and any variants. MLB history is bereft of quality Brayans and Bellos. This one is the best of both.

Gerrit Cole starts for the Yanks, trying to win the series before the 4th game. Cole got off to a rocky start in his first few starts off the IL in June and July, but is back to his brilliant self in 7 starts since July, except in one thing; the Yanks are not letting him go more than 6 innings. Yet. In those last 7 starts, Cole is 3-2 with a 1.58 ERA, and just 2 HR allowed in 40 innings. On the season, Cole is 6-4 with a 3.36 ERA. In 14 starts, he's pitched 75 innings, allowing 69 hits, 30 runs, 28 earned, 11 HR and 24 BB with 85 K. His once sky-high WHIP is now back below MLB average at 1.240. The Red Sox have hit Cole harder than any team in MLB except the Mets and Dodgers. in 18 starts, he's 7-5 against Boston with a 4.84 ERA. In 102 1/3 innings, he's given up 100 hits, 56 runs, 55 earned, 23 HR (more than 2 per 9 innings!) and 26 BB with 128 K's. In his 5 seasons with the Yanks, it's even worse: 5-4 with an ERA of 5.35. He's faced them once this year, and they got him again in a game at the Stadium in early July: 4 1/3 innings, 7 hits, 4 runs (earned). 1 HR, 2 BB and 8 K's. Tim Hill got him out of the jam in the 5th, and got the W when the Yanks exploded on the Sox' pen and scored 7 runs in the 5th and 4 more in the 7th, to win in a rout, 14-4.

Last night, the Yanks and Sox had another pitcher's duel for five innings anyway. Ex-Yankee farmhand Richard Fitts, traded as part of the deal that brought back Alex Verdugo, shut the Yanks out for those five innings, getting out of a bases loaded jam in the 2nd by getting Chisholm to flyout to center. Clarke Schmidt was just as good until with 2 outs in the 6th, when Yoshida crushed a 2-run HR off him, and the Sox had the lead. The Yanks turned to Leiter to keep it there, and he got nailed again, this time for a 2-run bomb to right by Story, and the Yanks' chances looked bleak, down 4-0. The Sox brought in Kelly for the 7th, and he had nothing: walk to Volpe, walk to Verdugo, RBI single to Torres, and Cora pulled Kelly as soon as he legally could. Cam Boozer provided relief...to the Yanks, walking Soto to reload the bases, and after a 1-0 FB up in the zone was called a ball anyway, Boozer was behind the 8-ball. Boozer fed Judge a fat FB and the ball, the Sox lead and Judge's homerless streak were all gone in a blink. The grand slam made it 5-4 Yanks, and the Yanks got two outstanding innings by new closer Luke Weaver, who gave up just a single to Yoshida and struck out 5 to close it out. Leiter got himself the cheapest of wins, finishing the 7th after the Story HR, improving to 4-5 on the year. Boozer took the loss, dropping to 2-3 on the season. The save was Weaver's 2nd since becoming the leader of the closer committee. The win was the Yanks' 3rd in a row, and pushed them back up to 24 games over .500 at 86-62 with 14 games left on the schedule.
In other East games tonight: In Detroit, the Tigers struck early against Zack Eflin, with Kerry Carpenter hitting a solo HR as the 2nd batter Eflin faced, and that was all he gave up in 6 2/3 innings. Beau Brieske opened with 4 outs, and Brant Hurter followed with 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just a walk. Brenan Hanifee pitched a 1-2-3 8th with 2 K's, and the Tigers had a combined no-hitter going to the 9th. Gunner Henderson tripled with the Tigers one out away from the win and a team no-hitter, but Tyler Holton stranded Henderson at 3rd to finish a scoreless 9th and get lock down a 1-0 win. Hurter got the win, getting to 5-1 on the season; Eflin took the hard-luck loss, his 2nd in a row, to drop to 10-9 on the year. Holton's save was his 8th.
At the Rogers Centre, the Cards got two in the first, but the Jays struck for 3 in the 4th getting 4 hits and a walk off of Eric Fedde. The game was still 3-2 in the 8th when Cards' rookie Thomas Saggese tied it with a solo HR, but the Jays walked it off in the 10th on bases loaded 1-out single by Alejandro Kirk, winning 4-3. Erik Swanson kept the ghost-runner from scoring in a 1-2-3 10th and got the win for Toronto, improving to 2-2 on the year; Ryan Fernandez pitched a scoreless 9th for St. Louis but gave up the game-winner and took the loss, dropping to 1-5 on the season.
In Cleveland, Zack Littell threw 6 innings of 2-hit, scoreless ball, striking out 5, and the Rays built up a 3-0 lead, hanging on to win 3-1. The Rays got up 3 runs on homers, a 2-run shot by Driscoll in the 3rd and a solo shot by Aranda in the 4th. The Guardians got a run off Montgomery in the 8th, but current Tampa closer Uceta got the last two outs that inning, then added a 1-2-3 9th to wrap the game up. Littell got the win, improving to 7-9 on the season, and Tanner Bibee gave up the 3 runs in 6 innings while striking out 9 to take the loss, dropping to 11-8. Uceta's save was his 3rd.
Coming into the games tonight, the Yanks' lead in the East was up to 3 full games for the first time since mid-June. The Sox dropped to 12 games back, the Rays stayed 13 back and the Jays stayed 16 games bac. The Twins lost, and the Tigers and Mariners won, so with the Red Sox loss to the Yanks, the Twins lead the final Wild Card slot, 2 1/2 ahead of Detroit, 3 1/2 ahead of Seattle and 4 1/2 ahead of the Sox. The Yanks magic number for at least a Wild Card spot dropped to 4, and the magic number for the divisional title is now down to 12 with 14 games to play.

In other East games today: At Rogers Centre, the Cards and Rays play the middle game of their series; Kyle Gibson (8-6, 4.20 ERA) for St. Louis and Jose Berrios (15-9, 3.52 ERA) for Toronto.
At 6:10 pm in Detroit, the O's and Tigers play their middle game. Corbin Burnes (13-6, 3.18 ERA) starts for Baltimore; he took a hard luck loss to Tampa last time out, 2-0. Tyler Madden will likely be a bulk inning follower, he's pitched two good games in a row in that role, and is 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA in 3 games as a starter/bulk innings reliever. Who opens for Detroit? I don't know, but it might be Brenan Hanifee again.
Also at 6:10 pm, but in Cleveland, the Rays go for their 3rd straight win against the Guardians. Drew Rasmussen (0-1, 2.79 ERA) will open for Tampa; he hasn't gone more than 2 innings in any of his 11 games since coming off the IL Joey Cantillo (1-3, 5.96 ERA) starts for Cleveland, he finally threw a good game of 7 shutout innings after four bad ones, but it was against the White Sox, and should that really count? (The White Sox lost their 4th straight last night, 2-0 to the A's, and are now 33-115, having lost 18 of 20 and 51 of 58. Their WPCT is now .226, below the modern record of .235 by the 36-116 Philadelphia A's of 1916, and they're on pace for 37-125, shattering the Mets record for losses in a season, 120 in their inaugural 1962 season.)
And at 1:07 pm, it's Bello vs. Cole at the Stadium.

In between Judge and Stanton is a 5-way tie for 3rd, including Naylor, Perez, Guerrero, Justin Turner of the Mariners and George Springer of the Jays.

Duran leads off for the Sox. Game underway. FB maybe just on or just off the corner away at the top, called a ball, marginal, either way, 1-0 FB in the zone low/away, taken, 1-1 Slider in the zone down and in, Duran misses late and under, pops to Chisholm, 1 down.
