I really hope they pull out the win tonight. I don't have faith in them. No energy or fire in this team right now.

In Game 3, the Royals turn to their main ace and Cy Young candidate, Seth Lugo, to turn the series in their favor. He started against the Yanks twice this season, a loss in KC in June and a dominant win at the Stadium a month ago. As he’s pitched against the Yankees twice, there’s no reason to do a career recap on him. Including that 5-0 win in New York, Lugo is 1-1 with 3 no-decisions in his last 5 starts, including a 2-inning “tune-up” start against the Braves in Atlanta the last series of the season after the Royals wrapped up a Wild Card slot. In the 5 starts, Lugo’s pitched just 25 innings, allowing 19 hits, 7 runs (earned), walking 4 and striking out 28 for an ERA of 2.52 and a WHIP of 0.92. In his last start, game 2 of the Wild Card series against the O’s, Lugo held a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the 5th. Mullins tied the game with a leadoff HR and the O’s loaded the bases with nobody out on a single, a walk, and an error by Lugo himself on a tapper between home and the mound. He got Santander to pop up, and he was taken out at 82 pitches. Zerpa came in the strike out Cowser and get Rutschman to ground out to short, and that was the last real chance the O’s had. Over the last 4 innings, they got just one single and one walk, and Witt drove in the go-ahead run with a RBI single in the 6th, and that was it, 2-1 Royals, sweeping the series, 2-0.
In the regular season, Lugo was 16-9 in a major league leading 33 starts (tied with 7 other MLB starters). Going 16-9 with a 3.00 ERA (3.0048, to be more precise), he pitched 206 2/3 innings, allowing 177 hits, 75 runs, 69 earned, just 16 HR, 48 BB and striking out 181. His WHIP on the season was an excellent 1.089. Among all MLB starters, Lugo is 7th in pitching bWAR, 10th in ERA, tied for 3rd in wins, 2nd in innings pitched, and 7th in fewest HR allowed per 9 innings. Tarik Skubal is the only reason Lugo is not favored to win the AL Cy Young Award. Corbin Burnes and Lugo will very likely finish 2-3 in some order. Lugo has pitched very well against the Yanks as both a starter and a reliever. This will be his 15th game against New York, and his 5th start. He’s 5-2 with 2.55 ERA against the Yanks in 35 1/3 innings, he’s allowed just 25 hits, 10 runs (earned), just 2 HR and 9 BB, with 45 K. His 11.5 K/9 innings against the Yanks is his 2nd best against any team he’s started against at least once. His WHIP against the Yanks is 0.962, and the team’s quadruple slash line against Lugo is .200/.263/.256/.519. He keeps the Yanks in the ballpark, and as any Yankee fan knows, if you can do that, you’re well on your way to beating them. The first of the 4 starts against the Yanks was for the Mets at Citifield in June, 2018. He threw 6 innings of shutout ball, giving up just 2 hits and a BB, while striking out 8, getting the W in a 2-0 Mets win. His 2nd start against them was in late August of 2020, also for the Mets at Citifield, and though he lasted just 3 2/3 innings, they still didn’t really get to him, as he gave up just 4 hits, 2 BB and a solo HR, for just 1 run, while striking out 7. He left the game down 1-0 on a HR by Tyler Wade of all people, but the Mets took him off the hook by tying it in the 6th. The Yanks got 4 runs in the 8th, and won 5-2. In the start this June in Kansas City, the Yanks got 2 in the 1st on a RBI single by Verdugo and a squeeze bunt by LeMahieu, and got him for 2 more in the 4th on a 2-run single by Trevino. Lugo took the loss in a 4-2 Yankees win, allowing 8 hits, 1 BB and 4 runs (earned) in 7 innings. Neither Trevino nor LeMahieu played in the rematch at the Stadium in September, and although that should’ve been a plus, it didn’t matter, and Lugo thoroughly baffled and dominated the Yanks, giving up just 3 singles and striking out 10 in a 5-0 Royals win that wasn’t as close as the score indicated. Torres had 2 of the 3 singles, and the only reason the Yanks didn’t multi-fail with RISP was that they didn’t get even one runner into scoring position the entire game. In his four starts against the Yanks to date, Lugo is 2-1 with one no-decision. In 23 2/3 innings, he’s allowed 17 hits, 5 runs (earned), 1 HR, walking 3 and striking out 29. His ERA in the 4 starts is 1.90 and the WHIP is 0.845.
In the post-season, Lugo made 3 relief appearances for the Mets in 2022, pitching a total of 2 innings, allowing 2 hits and a BB, while striking out 3, but no runs. The game against Baltimore in the Wild Card series is his only other post-season start: 4 1/3 innings, 5 hits, 1 run (earned), 1 BB and 6 K. The Yanks’ lineup has their hands full: Lugo has excellent stuff, throws 8 pitches including a killer curve, and has command of all of them. Five of his eight pitches have run values between +5 and +9. If Lugo threw his FB and sinker about 4-5 mph faster, he’d probably be the best pitcher in MLB, instead of a top 10 starter, and top 2-3 this year in the AL.
Repertoire: I gave all the usual repertoire data and stats when he pitched against the Yanks four weeks ago, they haven’t changed much since. Instead, I’ll give you a link to an article after that dominant September start describing Lugo’s approach and assortment in some detail, written by Jay Jaffe at Fangraphs:
Seth Lugo’s Kitchen Sink Approach Has Worked Brilliantly

I had to do the Name Game for Lugo twice this year, the 2nd of which was in the preview for the dominant win a month ago. Here’s a link to that:
Seth Lugo's Name Game from 9-10-24
I looked through the Seths and Lugos, and aside from hitter Smith and pitcher Lugo, there just isn’t anything terribly interesting to add…do you want to hear interesting tales about Astros mop-up reliever Seth Martinez? About how the Astros made a rare draft blunder taking Seth Beer with the 28th pick in 2018, and figured out that they made a mistake within a year and dumped him in as the lead prospect when they traded 4 prospects to the Diamondbacks for Zack Grienke? About how a pitcher named Seth Sigsby threw exactly one game and 3 innings for the 1893 New York Giants, and we don’t know when it was exactly because game-by-game box scores can’t be compiled for that season in the NL? How Seth Greisinger, Seth McClung and Seth Etherton were all crappy pitchers who had crappy 6–8-year careers in the majors, and all pitched during the 2005 season? Or that Noah Syndergaard’s middle name is Seth? Or that Seth Halvorsen might, just might, be the Rockies closer next season? Well, too bad for you, because I’m not going to tell you any of that stuff. And the four Lugos, aside from Julio and Seth, are considerably less interesting than the Seths.

Clarke Schmidt has the unenviable task of matching up with Lugo on the road in game 3, in front of a hostile Royals’ crowd. Before the lat injury, he looked like he had turned the corner and become a viable #3 starter in the majors: he was 5-3 in his first 11 starts with an ERA of 2.52, and had allowed more than 2 runs in just 3 of them. He pitched well in his first two starts off the IL, but has gotten worse the last three, two of which he lost: 3 runs in 5 1/3 against the Mariners in Seattle, 3 in 5 against the O’s at the Stadium, and 4 runs in 5 innings, the last game of the season against the Pirates. In the last five starts, Schmidt was mediocre: going 0-2 with 3 no-decisions, an ERA of 3.65 and a WHIP of 1.297 in 24 2/3 innings. On the season as a whole, Schmidt wound up 5-5 in 16 starts with an ERA of 2.85. In 85 1/3 innings, he’s allowed 71 hits, 31 runs, 27 earned, 8 HR, 30 BB and struck out 93. His WHIP on the season was still good: 1.184.
Schmidt has made 2 starts and 2 relief appearances against the Royals in his career, and he’s 2-0 with a 3.29 ERA against them. In 13 2/3 innings, he’s allowed 16 hits, 5 runs (earned) 2 HR, just 2 BB and struck out 11. His WHIP against them is a mediocre 1.317, and their team quadruple slash line against him is .291/.328/.473/.800. He missed the series in KC in June because of the injury, and his turn didn’t come up when the Yanks faced the Royals at the Stadium a month ago. His two starts against them were both last year, and both so-so. The first was a 5 2/3 inning win at the Stadium in July, giving up 5 hits, 3 runs (earned), 1 HR, 1 BB with 2 K’s in game the Yanks won, 5-4. The second one was worse. In his last start of the season, he lasted just 4 innings, giving up 8 hits, 1 HR and 2 runs (earned), but no BB and struck out 3 in a no-decision in a game the Yanks rallied to win 5-2. It was the next to last game of the season, the team’s 82nd win, guaranteeing that they finished over .500 for the 31st consecutive season, even though Schmidt had very little to do with the win. This is Schmidt’s 1st postseason start. He made three relief appearances in the 2022 playoffs: a scoreless inning mopping up after James Taillon game up the winning runs in the 10th in a 4-2 Yankee loss in game 2, blowing a 5-3 lead in the 9th inning of game 3, allowing Wandy Peralta’s two inherited runners to score on a single to tie the game, giving up another hit, getting a strikeout for the 2nd out and then giving up a walk-off single to Oscar Gonzalez to put the Yanks in a 2-1 hole, and in game 1 of the ALCS against the Astros, getting Taillon out of a jam in the 5th inning by getting a DP ball after giving up an intentional walk followed by an unintentional walk, keeping the game tied at 1, then giving up two solo HRs in the 6th to Gurriel and McCormack, giving the Astros a 3-1 lead they would never give back. In 2 1/3 innings in the post-season, he’s allowed 5 hits, 3 runs (earned), 2 HR, 2 BB and struck out 1. His post-season ERA is thus a towering 11.57 and his post-season WHIP is a nifty 3.000. It doesn’t exactly look like Schmidt is the guy you want facing the other team’s ace on the road in a pivotal game 3 of a 5-game playoff series, but there it is. Amazing how Boone, Cashman and the analytical guys manage to box themselves in so often in the post-season, isn’t it?

Yesterday: No miracles needed by the Mets yesterday, they got to the Phils #2 starter Aaron Nola early and often, and coasted to a 7-2 win, taking a 2-1 lead in their Division Series. Sean Manaea was superb for 7 innings, allowing 3 hits, 2 BB and 1 run, while striking out 6; he was pulled in the top of the 8th after giving up a leadoff single with a 6-0 lead. The Mets got solo HRs from Alonso and Winker in the 2nd and 4th, and broke it open with 2-run singles by Marte and Iglesias in the 6th and 7th. Manaea got the W to get to 1-0 in the playoffs, Nola took the loss to drop to 0-1
In San Diego, the game was wild for a while, then it stopped dead, as if frozen in time. Betts hit a solo HR in the first off of ex-Yankee Mike King, but the Padres roared back for 6 in the 2nd as the Dodgers made two poor plays to set up the big inning, and the Padres took full advantage on a 2-run double by Peralta, a sac fly by ex-Yankee Higashioka and a 2-run bomb by Tatis, Jr., his 4th HR in 4 playoff games this year. The Dodgers got right back into it in the 3rd, loading the bases with nobody out, and after Freeman lined out to Profar in left, Teoscar Hernandez cracked a grand slam to make it a 1-run game again, 6-5…and there the game came to a screeching halt. King retired the next 8, leaving the game up by a run. Buehler also made it through 5, giving up 2 more hits and a walk, but no more runs, and the bullpens took over. The Dodgers got three perfect innings from Banda, Hudson and Kopech, but the Padres’ relievers answered with 4 innings of 1-hit scoreless ball, striking out 6, and hanging for dear life to that 6-5 win. King got the win; he’s now 2-0 in the playoffs. Buehler took the loss, dropping to 0-1. Suarez retired all 4 batters he faced, striking out 2, for his 2nd save in the post-season. The Padres now lead the series 2-1.
Like the Royals and Yanks, the Tigers and Guardians had a day off to travel (to Detroit) and that series is also tied 1-1.

Earlier today, in game 3 of their series at Comerica Park, The Tigers went with an opener/bulk reliever game by opening with starter Keider Montero (who shut down the Yanks when he faced them) following by bulk reliever, Brant Hurler, while the Guardians opened with veteran Alex Cobb. Montero pitched a 1-2-3 first innings, and Hurter bent but didn’t break in his 3 1/3 innings, giving up 5 hits and a walk, but not allowing a run. Everyday Beau Brieske came in to finish the 5th. In the meantime, the Tigers got an RBI single in the 1st by Riley Greene, and a sac fly in the 3rd by Matt Vierling, both off Cobb, and lead 2-0, bottom 5. Little-used rookie lefty Erik Sobrwoski has come in to continue his very limited but outstanding season by throwing 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball, but is being lifted with a man on 1st and one out in the 5th. Tim Herrin came in and walked the first batter he faced, but got a flyout from Vierling and a lineout from Green, and now it's 2-0 Tigers, going top 6.
At 5:08 pm in game 4 of their series at Citifield, the Phillies start 1st-half flash Ranger Suarez (12-8, 3.49 ERA. In his first 16 starts, he was 10-2 with a 1.83 ERA. Since then: 2-6 with a 6.54 ERA. Jose Quintana starts for the FlushingMen™; he was 10-10 on the season with a 3.75 ERA, but has been lights-out down the stretch, 4-1 with an 0.74 ERA and 6 more shutout innings against the Brewers in game 3 of the Wild Card series, taking a no-decision.
Starting at 9:08, at Petco Park in San Diego, the Dodgers and Padres play game 4 of their series. Rookie Landon Knack makes his first-ever postseason start for Los Angeles; he was 3-5 with a 3.65 ERA in the regular season. Dylan Cease, who the Dodgers slapped around in game 1 for a no-decision, starts for San Diego. He was 14-11 with a 3.47 ERA in the regular season and is 0-0 with a 13.50 ERA in 1 playoff start.
And, at 7:08 pm at Kauffman Stadium, it’s Schmidt vs. Lugo. See you then.
