In other playoff action yesterday:
The Dodgers reasserted their dominance with another shutout rout of the Mets, this one 8-0. Poor Mets defense played a role in the Dodgers two runs, as Alvarez made a throwing error, putting runners at 1st and 2nd with nobody out. Will Smith singled in a run, and Tommy Edman hit a sac fly to make it 2-0. It stayed that way until the 6th, when reliever Reid Garrett gave up a two-run HR to Kike Hernandez, another clutch postseason HR for him, his 15th postseason HR in just 78 games; he has a career .550 slugging percentage in the playoffs, yet another reason why the Dodgers have the most dangerous lineup, even their “weak” hitters contribute in the playoffs. Ohtani basically ended things by crushing a 3-run HR down the line in right off of Tylor Megill in the 7th; Max Muncy’s solo shot in the 9th was icing on the cake (Muncy is another “weak hitter” who gets big hits in the postseason, as is Edman). Most ominous for the Mets and possibly for the Yanks as well, Walker Buehler found his stuff and threw 4 shutout innings before the Dodgers very deep pen handled things the rest of the way. It now appears as if the Dodgers rotation is straightening themselves out, with Yamamoto, “Medical Issues” Flaherty and now Buehler all pitching shutout ball in their respective last starts. Kopech got the win in relief; he’s 1-0 in the postseason. Luis Severino was a bit unlucky, but also was wild and couldn’t get out of the 5th; he took the loss and is now 1-1 in the playoffs. The Dodgers now lead the series, 2 games to 1.

Later tonight, at 8:08 pm at Citifield, the Dodgers and Mets play the 4th game of their LCS. Yoshinobu Yamamoto (7-2, 3.00 ERA), and one terrible 3-inning start and one great 5-inning start against the Padres in the Division Series, starts for Los Angeles. You’ll remember he shoved the bats up the Yankees’ orifices in his start against them at the Stadium in June, throwing 100 mph, pitching 7 shutout innings, holding them to 2 hits and 2 walks, and striking out 7…and suffered a rotator and right triceps strain that put him on the IL for nearly 3 months. Junkballing lefty Jose Quintana tries to stem the Dodgers flood tide for the Mets. Quintana was 10-10 with a 3.75 ERA in 2024, but was great down the stretch, going 4-1 in his last 6 starts with an ERA of 0.74, and 0 HR allowed in 36 2/3 innings. In the playoffs, Quintana has continued his recent brilliancy, throwing 6 shutout innings for a no-decision in the deciding game 3 of the Wild Card series against the Brewers, and 5 innings of 2 hit ball with just one unearned run allowed in the clinching game 4 of the Division Series against the Phils, for another no-decision. So Quintana hasn’t allowed a HR in 47 2/3 innings going back to August, but that will be tested by the powerful Dodgers lineup. You might also recall that Quintana stymied the Yanks for 5 innings in a game at the Stadium in July, walking 5, but giving up 3 hits and just 1 earned run on a solo HR by Torres. Quintana got the win when the Mets got 2 in the 6th off Michael Tonkin, and won 3-2.
And, in 15 minutes at the Stadium, it’s Schmidt vs. Boyd. See you then.

Boyd is homer-prone. That makes him Yankee-prone… Let’s prone him. A lot… 🤓 He's also a lefty, though. Yankee kryptonite. Hopefully the boys can buck that trend. Gonna miss this one due to the early start. Will follow the dots here at work for an hour or so, then have to take the girls to taekwondo and grab dinner after. I'll be staring at my phone a lot.

Of the 4 homers Boyd gave up this season, two were back-to-backers from Soto and Judge in the 1st inning of his start at the Stadium in August. He game up just two more in 39 2/3 innings and none in his two starts against the Tigers in 6 2/3. So I'm not sure how relevant his past HR problems are right now. We'll find out starting about 15 minutes from now.

FB well high at 92.6, taken, 1-2 Slider 6 inches outside, lays off, 2-2 Gets a big break; Slider above the knees near middle is called ball 3. 80% on Gameday, terrible call goes the Yankees' way, 3-2. Takes his timeout. Change outside middle, Torres fouls it off the right side. FB above middle, Torres fouls that off. Boyd throwing 93 so far.

Soto.... Hit with a pitch clock violation for not getting in the box on time, 0-1 Umps overrule Soto's argument that other things were going on, and it's still a strike. Sinker above middle, cracked hard to left center, Thomas races to his right and makes a terrible backhand sliding catch, taking away a double and maybe a run.
