Playing the Name Game: Due to circumstances I won’t go into, the Name Game will be brief. There are fewer than 25 Brents in MLB history, the best hitter is Brent Rooker, the slugging outfielder for the A’s who broke through this season, hitting .293/39/112 this year, and finishing 7th, 5th and 6th in OBA, slugging and OPS, and 6th in adjusted OPS as well. Brenton Doyle is young enough and talented enough to catch Rooker for the best hitting Brent in the next several years. There isn’t really a good Brent pitcher. Brent Strom, who pitched for the Mets and Padres in the 1970s managed 1.2 bWAR in 5 major league seasons; Honeywell himself sits at 0.4 bWAR. That’s just about it for the pitching Brents. There are a few other hitting Brents, such as Brent Gates, the light-hitting infielder for the Expos in the 90s, and Brent Mayne, who managed to last 15 seasons as mostly a backup catcher, mostly for the Royals. He did have 6 seasons of more than 100 games and 7 of more than 300 PA, but his career bWAR total was less than 3.
Brent is the only Honeywell in MLB history.

The Yanks go to rookie righty Luis Gil in this desperate hour, hoping to stave up elimination and set up their ace Gerrit Cole for a game 5. Gil hasn’t pitched since starting game 4 against the Guardians in the ALCS 11 days ago. Gil has command problems at least half the time anyway; asking him to pitch on too much rest is begging for trouble, but that’s the fix the Yanks find themselves in. To tell the tale again, Gil came out like a ball of fire in his first 12 starts, going 8-1 with a 1.82, then slumped, changed the grip on his slider, pitched some more good games, slumped again, went on the IL with a strained back, and pitched poorly in his last few starts. Stupid as it sounds, his position as a rotation starter might be in jeopardy as soon as say, June, next year, unless he can improve his command, add a fourth pitch, or both. On the season as a whole, Gil was 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA. In 29 starts, he threw 151 2/3 innings, giving up just 104 hits, 60 runs, 58 earned and 18 HR. He led all of MLB in walks with 77, and struck out 171. His WHIP for the season was a decent 1.193 despite all the walks. If he’d had enough innings to qualify, he’d have been among the top 10 in hits per 9 and K’s per 9, but would also have led the AL in BB per 9.
In his only playoff start, as expected, his command was poor. He managed to make it through 4 innings against the Guardians, giving up 3 hits, 2 earned runs, 3 walks and struck out 3, getting a no-decision as the Yanks won it with a 2-run rally in the 9th off of Clase. This is his 2nd career start against LA. In the series at the Stadium in June, he was great for 4 innings, giving up just 1 hit and 1 BB, but they got to him for 3 hits in the 5th, including a 2-run double by Betts, and Teoscar Hernandez finished his night with 2 outs in the 6th, hitting a solo HR off of a changeup. The Yanks rallied to win behind Grisham’s 3 run bomb off of Glasnow, 6-4. This is Gil’s first World Series appearance, obviously.

Yesterday was different day, same s…story. The Dodgers played like a World Series champion, the Yanks played like a team praying they don’t get swept. Again, the Dodgers grabbed the early lead, again with Freeman hitting a HR, this time a 2-run shot in the first, putting Schmidt and the Yanks on their heels immediately. The Dodgers followed that with a leadoff walk by Edman in the 3rd, a grounder by Ohtani moving him to 2nd with one out and Mookie Betts doing what he does, fighting off a pitch inside, dropping a flare in front of Soto for a RBI single to make it 3-0. The Yanks were again stuffed by the Dodgers starter: Walker Buehler looked great, holding them to just 2 hits and 2 BB in 5 innings, and the only threat was snuffed out when 3rd base coach Rojas asked Stanton to try to score from 2nd with 2 down in the 4th inning on a single to left by Volpe, Teoscar Hernandez played it well, and threw Stanton out at home by more than enough. The Dodgers tacked on a run in the 6th when Jake Cousins hit Lux with a pitch, he stole 2nd and scored on a solid single up the middle by Edman. The Dodgers bullpen toyed with the Yankees until the 9th, when as in game 2, the Yanks tried to rally on a 1-out walk by Rizzo and a 2-out 2-run HR by Verdugo off of Kopech., but Torres grounded out to short to end it. Too little, too late for the second straight game. And so the Yanks face an elimination game tonight, going with their 4th starter against a Dodgers lineup that has yet to really break out the way it can against the Yanks in a game this series. Let’s see if this Yankee team has anything left in the tank.
And, maybe for the last time in 2024, at 8:08 pm at Stadium, it’s Honeywell & Co vs. Gil & Co. See you then, if I'm not there. And maybe even if I'm there; I might check in on my phone a few times, just to ask questions.

There's a slight chance I might go to the game tonight, so I'm posting a somewhat abbreviated preview. Let us know if you wind up going!

No team has ever come back from a 0-3 deficit to win a WS. So we're due, right? 6-3 Yanks tonight.

I hate to grovel in the hopes for a single win, so instead I’ll cling to the remote chance we can get this to game 7. Then, winner take all and hats off if we lose…

What sense does that make? I imagine that Boone is rotating his L and R hitters in the hope it will cause match up issues for the Dodgers bullpen. beat me to it. since it's a bullpen game, wants to alternate L and R as much as he can to disrupt the matchups for roberts.
maybe stanton behind jazz helps jazz. on the other hand, leaves judge less protected. also as someone mentioned, doesn't let stanton clog the bases in front of jazz. not game breaking but boone is willing to try anything to get the slightest advantage.
hope we live to play another game but this is a gigantic mountain to climb. obviously we need a strong game from gil. tough position for him to be in and of course judge needs to break out. any help we get from others will be appreciated.

Yeah, OK, crap. I looked at Fangraphs to see who was starting for the Dodgers earlier this afternoon, and they had Honeywell, but it's the rookie Casparius, even though Honeywell might throw several innings of relief.
Casparius pitched well in 14 starts at AAA this year, and gave up 2 runs in 3 games, 8 1/3 innings for LA in the regular season, and was unscored on in 3 games and 4 1/3 innings in the postseason. He wasn't on the roster for the Division series, but pitched in games 1, 3 and 6 against the Mets.
He's a righty, throws 95-7 on the FB about half the time, slider 84 about 35%, curve 80 about 11%, and cutter 91 about 4%
In the 3 postseason games, 40 four-seamers averaging about 95, 22 sliders averaging 84, 8 curves averaging 79-80. His average Exit velo was 89.4. In 70 pitches 4 have been whifs (Swinging strike rate of 5.7%) 12 have been called strikes (17.1%) for a CSW of 23%.
Obviously, none of the Yankees' hitters have ever faced Casparius.

There's a slight chance I might go to the game tonight, so I'm posting a somewhat abbreviated preview. Let us know if you wind up going! Yeah, I searched multiple ticket sellers in vain, looking for a ticket deal I could live with, but I couldn't find one. Wanted to take my nephew to the game. To make a long story short...his father was 10 years older than me, and was born in Brooklyn, and was a Dodgers fan before they moved to LA. He was one of many who stayed loyal to the team that didn't stay loyal to them, and my nephew became a Dodgers fan because of his influence. Tonight was something like a once-in-a-lifetime chance for him to see the Dodgers clinch a title in person, so even though it would've been painful for me, I'd have taken him. But I couldn't get the deal I wanted/needed, so I had to let it all go.
