Now's not the time for Hal and family to focus on "money" ... If the Dodgers can make the BIG moves that they've been making to put together what was, honestly, a better team than ours (in the end), then Hal just needs to take a page out of his dear ol' dad's book... Get Soto signed and make other necessary moves ( trade prospects for guys that can help us NOW )... It needs to happen... Also, I think we can grab a few vet FA's at position ( i.e. LF Jurickson Profar... He seemed to thrive with being in a better situation with a more competitive team out in SD this year... check his stats: www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/profaju01.shtml ... plus, he's a switch hitter .. even more of a plus is you can play him in the infield if need be... another Jazz type, with pop ) Gotta bring back Soto... Everybody's not built to play in the Bronx.. Soto CLEARLY is... He's definitely a straw that stirs the drink type... Lastly, even though I can really go on and on about this team (because I love it so much), we need some back end bullpen help... We all knew (deep down) that Holmes was never the answer (he tore our hearts out too many times this year... too many, on the back end)... We get a solid back end closer type... And a SOLID start via trade to fit beind Cole - I pray he doesn't opt out, because he can folks, just sayin... Rodon, Gil, and Schmidt are decent enough to hold on to. I mentioned Profar somewhere here yesterday, but as somebody I'd probably avoid. He's been around since 2012 and the only plus offensive year he's had was last season...a contract year. That's a red flag on someone who is a huge risk for a big drop off in production. Aside from Soto, this is a really subpar FA crop, unfortunately.
Profar is a good player. But, because of the Luxury Tax if the Yankees re-sign Soto I think they might go with either Peraza or Durbin rather than sign Profar.

soto's post-game comments about his free agency were rather "mercenary". he liked his time here but said nothing to indicate we had any inside track. guessing he's been well coached by boras and understandably, that's what he has to say. whatever the outcome, hope boras doesn't drag it out too long. because so much is riding on whether or not he signs and hate to see yankees stuck holding the bag. That was my impression too Bumper. Alone among the Yankees I saw interviewed after the game, he didn't appear dejected in the least and made it clear he was open to listening to all 30 teams. For sure that was likely a planned negotiating strategy, but still he was singularly philosophical. I was watching Michael Kay's show on YES the next day -- Kay is refreshingly honest and straightforward talking about the players for a guy who broadcasts the games -- and he said bluntly that Soto had not, in his words, "bought into the brand" the way most Yankee players have. And that's actually understandable for a player who is on his third franchise at the age of 26. That's not to say he won't sign with the Yankees, but it does sound like he will go wherever the money is highest. Like most people do.

The team needs to get better, not worse. Re-signing Soto and going cheap everywhere else likely means we're WORSE than this last year, which we saw wasn't good enough. Maybe Dominguez is the ROY, maybe young pitchers and infielders emerge to where we actually get better but I'm not willing to bank on that. I'm not sure I see how signing Soto and going cheap elsewhere makes us worse. Soto is a generational talent. He will likely be an MVP candidate for the next 5+ years at least. The other holes needing filled are 1B, where you have to bring somebody in to replace almost zero production. You have to find a 2B/3B depending on what happens with Gleyber. If Gleyber walks and you move Jazz over, Jazz's offense probably at least equals Gleyber. 3B was a black hole before Jazz, so it's not like you're replacing much there. Dominguez is no sure thing, but he doesn't have to be a superstar to replace Verdugo's mediocre production. As for pitching, Cole is likely back. Have to hope Rodon/Nestor can find some sort of consistency. Schmidt/Gil need to trend in the right direction after pretty strong 2024's overall. They're not signing any more SP whether Soto's gone or not. The bullpen needs work, but that's always a crapshoot. If you remove Soto from the lineup, this is a mediocre FA crop. Nobody individually or in aggregate that they bring in is a guarantee to be productive or approach Soto's production. With Soto, at least you know you're getting a very productive superstar. With or without Soto, they have to make smart decisions. But I don't see how you make this team better in any way by letting one of the best 5 hitters in the game walk away. I just look at this roster and see way more projected decline than improvement. So if you compound that by cheaping out on replacements for contributors, I just don't see it going well. It feels to me like if we keep Soto and do (essentially) nothing else the next few years it's going to be a slooooooooow bleed where we get gradually worse as guys like Judge/Cole/Stanton/Rodon age and each year we stay stagnant/get a little worse and just keep falling short. I just think they'll be organizationally stuck in neutral the next few years if they keep Soto and try to slash payroll at the same time. But yeah, I guess maybe it's better to bank on the farm producing some key players and good low budget signings complimenting around Soto than it is to bank on mid and 2nd tier FA signings panning out? IDK, neither way seems attractive to me. I think Cashman has done a horrific job with the contracts he's handed out and they backed themselves into a corner where they have to just say screw it and sign a bunch of guys to fill holes, including Soto, if they want to win with this core. I keep pushing for a 3-4 year period where Hal just closes his eyes and signs checks left and right. Just load up, deal with the price tag, try to win one, and then after the 4 years when it's just Judge/Soto on the books you can rebuild/slash costs whatever.

WFAN’s Evan Roberts said that it take 15yrs/750M for any team who wants Soto. That’s ridiculous… nobody’s worth that!

That’s ridiculous… nobody’s worth that! Yeah, I think of these media types are just trying to gather attention. it's hard to know where this will wind up. judge is getting $40 mil/yr. ohtani $70 mil/yr. think soto can get at least $50 mil/yr. 12 yrs, which is not unreasonable puts him at $600 mil and that's only through age 37. i can certainly see boras wanting a contract that takes him through age 40 which is 15 yrs - hence $750 mil topping ohtani's total contract value. and i don't see soto doing that deferred salary thing.
speaking of deferred salary, ohtani will get $68 mil/yr for 10 yrs after he retires. think about that - paying $68 mil/yr for a player no longer playing. bonilla's $1.2 mil/yr is chump change by comparison.

It is easy to defer his salary when he is still making millions through endorsements. I read somewhere that he is getting more than $10 million annually from deals.

Ohtani's deferral is linked to the income tax laws in California. High state tax rates, including those in New York, can discourage athletes from signing deals when comparable ones are available in low tax states such as Texas an Florida. Ohtani makes a lot more than $10M a year from outside deals so cash flow is no sacrifice for him. It is estimated to save him $ 90 M in taxes. There were politicians who introduced bills to make such deals subject to taxation but I don't think anything is happening. We could see more this year - maybe even in New York ! legiscan.com/CA/bill/SJR14/2023

A million dollars ain’t what it used to be to be…. With inflation 68 mil will be worth pennies! Soto could be the 1st Billion dollar man! 😉😆 *joking*

It goes both ways.

I don't expect Soto to defer any money and why would he? Someone will break the bank for him without deferrals. The CBA requires all deferred payments to players be fully funded within two years of the signing of the deals. The money goes into escrow and the proceeds, plus interest, go to the player. The team is charged the face value of the deal for the LT. It doesn't do much for the owner. See Article XVI of the CBA for the rules.
