It is easy to defer his salary when he is still making millions through endorsements. I read somewhere that he is getting more than $10 million annually from deals. I don't expect Soto to defer any money and why would he? Someone will break the bank for him without deferrals. Just my 2 cents... I expect the Yankees to make a competitive offer. But, if he wants the highest offer I think he signs with the Mets.

Unlike most here, I gladly bid Soto a fond good bye. Too much money for a team that belongs to Aaron Judge. Soto is a great player and seems to be a decent guy, but the square peg in a round hole of him fitting only into Judge’s rightful position in right field while not playing it nearly as well has worn out its welcome with me. He doesn’t throw as well from there, and only average on the bases himself. He’s great at one thing…hitting. We can build a better club without him. Get another top starting pitcher, a real first baseman. A brand new shiny second sacker. Maybe a new left fielder. All with the money Soto would cost, actually less. I’d make him a nice offer well below what Boras wants and give him 30 days to accept or decline, then be prepared to move on. Time’s a-wasting, Juan. You’re great, but not great enough to leave black holes all around you.

55 million a year for 12 years with about 1/3 of it deferred? Wow. I will say that I don't think the Yankees will care how much they need to pay him in total, but more what his deal would count against the luxury tax threshold. They don't say what that would be with the deferred money but it would be less than the full 55 million. 12 years is actually "team friendly", at least relative to the 14 year contract guesses I have been seeing.

Money deferrals are tax schemes players use in the hope they will retire to a lower tax area. The money intself has to be put in escrow. It is addressed in the CBA. As for the LT, MLB charges the team the Present Value of he deal. I think MLB levies the tax at $ 46 M per year on the Ohtani deal.

To be a good sport I'll get him an Uber.

I’m on the fence with retaining Soto. Yankees have several holes to fill so an offseason of Burnes, Bregman, and Walker would vastly improve the roster. On the other hand nothing would please me more but to see Mets fans cry if we keep Soto in pinstripes.

WFAN’s Evan Roberts said that it take 15yrs/750M for any team who wants Soto. That’s ridiculous… nobody’s worth that! No! This is MLB where hitting a ball with a bat buys you multiple millions! He will get it!

Also Judge is past his prime and hasn't done much in the playoffs!

Soto is going to the HOF and it could be in a Yankee cap.

I think after losing the WS and Judges terrible post season the Yankees need to make a big splash… it’s all about filling those seats at the stadium. Hate to say but we need to retain our new toy!

It's not just filling the seats which they would probably do with or without Soto. This may be dumb, but I was thinking about official MLB Soto jersey sales. How much do the Yankees make every time a Yankee Soto jersey is sold??? Do you think they make $3/jersey?
