Wood, who has spent the last few weeks spreading debunked allegations of voter fraud, also tweeted out an outlined plan to boycott the state's Senate runoff race, telling Republicans to "break" the election by refusing to vote.

To the editor: A few years ago I came to understand that my biggest regrets, which always stemmed from hurting people in some way, were the result of my selfishness.
I was unaware or, more often, didn't care that getting my way inflicted pain on family, friends and strangers. Even now the shame lingers. ("'Aren't you going to help him?' L.A. hospitals serving the poor and people of color hit hardest by COVID-19," Dec. 30)
It makes me wonder how this country will process its shame in the years to come. Will the COVID-19 deniers, the maskless, the people who refused to do anything to keep others safe while hundreds of thousands of Americans died miserably — will they regret their selfishness?
Looking around the country now, it's hard to imagine a collective sense of guilt for our actions down the road. When doing the least we can — wearing a mask — is denounced as "tyranny," we are in deep, deep trouble as a nation.
Sure, we'll eventually see the end of the COVID-19 crisis. But I worry for my children that America will never recover.

Neal Katyal, who served as acting solicitor general under President Obama, compared a recording of President Trump speaking to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to "the way that people in organized crime rings talk."
"I've heard the extraordinary excerpts that the Washington Post has and, at least based on those excerpts, it sounds like Donald Trump is talking like mafia boss, and not a particularly smart mafia boss at that. This is the way that people in organized crime rings talk, and you see it there," Katyal told MSNBC host Alex Witt.
"You know, maybe that works in the Soviet Union or something. It certainly hasn't been the way that America - the American government has operated."
The Washington Post on Sunday broke a story in which excerpts from a phone call between Trump and Raffensperger appeared to show the president asking the state secretary to "find" the necessary votes needed to overturn the results of the election in Georgia.
President-elect Joe Biden won Georgia, a victory that has survived recounts and efforts by Trump to overturn the result in court.
Katyal, now a Georgetown law professor, said he believed Trump's actions were "really truly an impeachable offense."
"This is, you know, the heart of what the abuse of power that our founders worried about so much is - it's, you know, the idea that the government official can use the powers of his office to try and stay in office and try and browbeat other officials that disagree with them," he said.
"So one question is whether or not a high crime and misdemeanor was committed, certainly the tape makes it sound like it has.
The second is whether or not there has been a criminal offense and the federal code 52 U.S.C. 20511 prohibits a federal official from interfering in a state election process," said Katyal.

He may yet inflict more havoc and pain on our country and the world before he is gone, but at least this specific nightmare will end on January 20, when Biden is sworn in as the 46th President. President Donald Trump catalogued a series of false conspiracy theories during an hour-long call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger on Saturday in which he sought to overturn the state's election results, and they were familiar to anyone following the far fringes of the internet.
Trump floated fragments of several baseless conspiracy theories that were primarily pushed by QAnon conspiracy theorists over the last two months, including a widely debunked theory about voting machines from Dominion Voting Systems.
The wide-ranging slew of theories, spawned on extremist forums like 4chan, were repeatedly referred to by Trump as “rumors” that are “trending on the internet.” He claimed they were reasons Raffensperger should “reexamine [the election] with people that want to find answers.”
And while Trump has embraced conspiracy theories for much of his tenure as president, Saturday's call offered a look at just how much he is now relying on some of the most outlandish theories from obscure corners of the internet to make his case for election fraud.
"Trump manages to distill down to a 10-minute monologue what would take the average person years to pull together,” said Joan Donovan, research director of the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School.
Donovan noted that many of the baseless claims floated by the president have been embraced in recent weeks by pro-Trump media.
“Everything from fakes, forgeries, and machine hacking to collusion across parties, it's all laid out in detail with rapid fluidity,” Donovan said, noting the conspiracy theories laid out in the call “are very popular on rightwing media like Parler and Newsmax.”

Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue into his remarks -- and warned of the dangers of a Democratic monopoly of power in Washington if they lost -- the President's appearance was essentially a wild, on-stage prime-time TV version of Saturday's call in which he leaned on Georgia state officials to conjure votes out of thin air in order to discredit Biden's already certified Peach State victory -- a flagrant and possibly unlawful abuse of power.
The President's rants on Monday night contrasted sharply with the stunning point-by-point denunciation of his case by a top GOP election official who used facts and evidence to dismiss false claims of electoral corruption.
"This is all easily, provably false. Yet the President persists," Gabriel Sterling, the voting systems implementation manager for the Georgia secretary of state's office, said in a calm, reasoned news conference on Monday.
Trump created a nightmarish picture of a ranting, demagogic commander-in-chief, wallowing in fantasies of the political fringe -- a frightening prospect since he retains the awesome powers of the presidency for another 15 days.

President Donald Trump at one point said there would be 100 million doses prepared by the end of 2020. More recently, officials said they would have 20 million doses administered by then.
That didn’t happen. In mid-December states began to report a range of issues—deliveries of doses delayed, vaccination reporting systems shutting down. And as the New Year rolled by, the administration had still not reached its target.
While administration officials, citing everything from production and quality control sluggishness to allocation scheduling conflicts, have admitted there was a slight lag in getting the first batches out to states, they have repeatedly told their local counterparts that distribution would soon get back on track. A surprising number of healthcare and frontline workers haven’t shown up for their vaccinations or are refusing to get them. Why is this being allowed to happen? I guess he’s swinging there peacefully? I can’t figure out why the riots were allowed last summer, so how can I figure this one out?... Life in the US has become bizarre... Yeah, at least they didn't go loot the local Target or Walmart. |
