Axios and Politico reported that some of Trump's close friends and advisors were trying to avoid him and had given up trying to communicate.

The official told The Post that Trump was so incensed at Vice President Mike Pence, who presided over the congressional session to confirm Joe Biden as the president-elect, that "he couldn't see straight."

According to Politico, fewer staffers than normal were around Trump on Wednesday. The report noted that the White House senior advisor Jared Kushner was traveling back from the Middle East that day.

In a divided America, the events that unfolded on Capitol Hill on Wednesday afternoon should unite us all. In a universal sense of national shame and embarrassment.

Under President Donald Trump, the United States — historically a beacon of freedom and citadel of liberty — has devolved into a shocking exemplar of dysfunction. Democracies around the world, those established and those fledgling, could only look on in horror at the televised images of a pro-Trump mob storming the august American center of government, crowding its balustrades, smashing windows, flooding into its statuary hall.

Congratulations, Mr. Trump. Our Shining City on the Hill is now a tarnished emblem of national disgrace. The American carnage you promised to eradicate at the beginning of your term has turned to reality at the end of it.
Blood spilled

The scenes looked like something out of a bad action movie: Rioters descending on the Capitol. Armed but outnumbered security forces barricading themselves with weapons drawn, firing teargas and hustling members of Congress and Vice President Mike Pence to safety.

A woman shot at the Capitol, later pronounced dead. And, in an iconic image of pure insurrection, a smug protester sitting in the president’s chair in the evacuated Senate Chamber.

How could the Capitol have been left so vulnerable even as protesters gathered in large numbers downtown? There will be time to investigate and understand how authorities were so unprepared for this rush of rioters and so slow to regain control of the Capitol.

But there’s little question about what triggered it.

Just before Congress gathered in a joint session for the ministerial task of counting the electoral votes showing that Joe Biden was elected the next president of the United States, Trump spouted his rancid conspiracy theories about a stolen election at a rally on the White House Ellipse.

He closed his remarks by egging his followers to march down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol and make their grievances known. “We’re just going to try and give (Republicans in Congress) the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country,” Trump exhorted them.

And they followed his every word. From the safety of the White House

The congressional tallying of electoral votes proscribed under the Constitution had to be suspended. And like an arsonist enjoying his handiwork, Trump watched the chaos unfold from the safety of the White House. Finally, he urged his fervent followers to stay peaceful and go home.

Too little. Far too late.

What to do about this man who has brought such ignominy upon our country? Censure by Congress? Certainly. Criminal exposure for inciting violence and pressuring Georgia’s secretary of state to flip that state’s election results? Perhaps.

But can any punishment truly fit the crime? Four years of Trump’s divisive leadership have produced impeachable conduct, failed management of a pandemic that has killed 360,000 Americans, and the undermining of democracy with self-serving and contrived claims of voter fraud.

And now — as a capstone — he fomented mob violence that had all the earmarks of an insurrection.

All the way, he was abetted by sycophantic Republican enablers in Congress, who should immediately drop their disgraceful effort to decertify the Electoral College votes of battleground states won by Democrat Joe Biden.

Trump’s onetime fixer Michael Cohen testified in 2019 that Trump wouldn’t cede power peacefully if he lost the election. Cohen, who knew Trump as well as anyone, was prescient.

One way or another, however, Trump will soon be gone from the White House. It will be left to Biden and the people of the United States to convince the world that Wednesday’s disgraceful images don’t represent the essence of America.

“This has got to go on for the four years of this clown being in the Oval Office,” Tim said, referring to President-elect Biden. “He ain’t representing me. He’s not my president.”

Tim, who said he traveled to Washington, D.C., from Maryland to take part in the protests against Biden’s victory, did not believe the election results were legitimate. “I don’t think anybody voted for Biden,” Tim said. “I think the whole thing was rigged.”

Tim’s friend, Stu, chimed in to describe what he saw as evidence the vote was illegitimate. “They got proof that the machines — they were stacking all the machines with the ballots,” Stu said.

There is no evidence of widespread fraud in the 2020 presidential election, and the results have been examined by outside experts and Republican state officials. And after the Capitol was cleared, those results were expected to be certified by the Republican-controlled Senate with Trump’s own running mate, Vice President Mike Pence, presiding.

The violence at the Capitol Wednesday was the culmination of a large “Stop The Steal” protest in Washington that included speeches by Trump and Rudy Giuliani, one of the president’s staunchest allies.

“We will never give up. We will never concede. It doesn’t happen. You don’t concede when there’s theft involved,” Trump said. “Our country has had enough. We’re not going to take it anymore.”

Insurrection fueled by conspiracy groups, extremists and fringe movements

(CNN)The mob of Trump supporters who stormed the US Capitol on Wednesday included conspiracy theorists linked to QAnon and the Proud Boys -- two right-wing extremist factions that President Donald Trump repeatedly refused to condemn during his election campaign last year.

The insurrection at the heart of America's democracy, egged on by Trump's rhetoric, represented a stunning show of force for the fringe movements and their adherents. Four people were left dead during the mayhem, according to the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, including one woman shot by a U.S. Capitol Police officer and three other people who had medical emergencies.

One of the most recognizable figures in the videos and photos of the chaos on Capitol Hill was a man in his 30s with a painted face, fur hat and a helmet with horns.

The protester, Jake Angeli -- known by followers as the QAnon Shaman -- quickly became a symbol of the bizarre and frightening spectacle as photos circulated of him roaming the Capitol halls holding an American flag affixed to a spear in one hand and a bullhorn in the other, and even standing shirtless atop the Senate dais.

Angeli, who lives in Arizona, couldn't be reached for comment, but his cousin, Adam Angeli, confirmed that the man in the horns was his relative in a brief call with CNN Wednesday. Adam Angeli said he thought his cousin might be between jobs and that "he's a patriot, he's a very big United States of America type of a person."

Jake Angeli's Facebook page is filled with posts evoking the conspiracy theories of QAnon, whose adherents believe in a ludicrous theory that there is a cabal of Satan-worshipping pedophiles who have infiltrated the highest reaches of American government and are being opposed by President Trump.

Some of Angeli's Facebook posts have a violent edge, such as a meme declaring "we shall have no real hope to survive the enemies arranged against us until we hang the traitors lurking among us." One photo on Angeli's Facebook page depicts him adorned in the fur and horns, taking aim towards the camera with a rifle.

In recent months, Angeli has been a regular presence at pro-Trump protests in Arizona, including demonstrations outside the Maricopa County vote-counting center.

Other rioters photographed at the Capitol wore clothing with QAnon icons and held signs with slogans associated with the bizarre movement.

Robert Moore, the Washington correspondent for Britain’s ITV News, has gone viral and won widespread praise from peers for an extraordinary report following Donald Trump’s supporters as they forced their way into the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.

Moore was in the thick of the carnage on a historic day in the U.S. capital, surfing the mob wave as it battered down the doors and windows of the Capitol building, and calmly reporting on the events as they unfolded around him.

“For four years we have witnessed turmoil in America, but nothing quite like this,” Moore said, as he opened a seven-minute report, in which he captured tear gas canisters being detonated and was jostled by protestors inside the Capitol building. “This is exactly what was feared, but in no way is this a surprise. It has been fueled by the president’s rhetoric, and it’s increasingly clear, this nation has not healed the wounds, it has simply amplified them,” Moore added.

The reporter and his camera operator captured Trump’s supporters chanting “stop the steal” in the corridors of power and was told by one MAGA cap-wearing protester: “They work for us. They don’t get to steal it from us. They don’t get to tell us we didn’t see what we saw.”

Some in Texas are calling for Senator Ted Cruz to resign after his vote objecting to Arizona's electoral votes. The measure failed, and Congress confirmed Joe Biden as the winner of the November election about 2:30 Central Time Thursday morning.

Texas' two U.S. senators voted differently on the certification of the electoral college vote Wednesday night. Both John Cornyn and Ted Cruz are Republican, but Cornyn voted against a measure to object to Arizona's electoral votes; Cruz voted in favor.

"Let me be clear, this objection is for the state of Arizona, but it is broader than that," Cruz said. "It is an objection for all six of the contested states to have a credible, objective, impartial body hear the evidence and make a conclusive determination."

Cruz said he is not trying to overturn the election, but he says a review would restore voters' faith the in system among both Republicans and Democrats, saying the review would alleviate concerns about "the legitimacy of this and subsequent elections."

"That would benefit both sides. That would improve legitimacy of this election, and so let me urge my colleagues don't take, perhaps, the easy path," he said.

The Texas Democratic Party responded by setting up a petition calling for Cruz' resignation.

"Cruz's actions have undermined our democracy, inspired treasonous, seditious acts, and brought shame to Texas," Chair Gilberto Hinojosa wrote in a statement. "The tragic results of his actions will reverberate for generations. By leading the objection to the Electoral College certification, all the while knowing the devastating consequences, he has demonstrated he is not fit to serve in the U.S. Senate."

Hinojosa says the Justice Department should investigate Cruz, saying he acted "in bad faith by leveraging fringe theories and blatant disinformation to challenge the legitimacy of the 2020 election results and position himself in the 2024 Republican presidential primary."

America was lucky to be saved by its democracy -- even if some don't realize it.

... Yes, the United States witnessed a mob of mostly White men breaking into its Congress, because they felt the law was theirs alone, and because so many ordinary Americans spent four years thinking the horror was either too ridiculous to fear, or would just pass.

But in the end, the quieter majority, not the loudest voice, remained standing. This short moment of ugly collapse should not lead Americans to dismiss the extraordinary eloquence and value of their system.

The rioters abused the privileges of their wealthy democracy - their free lives, in the richest nation on earth - to indulge in a fantastical, parallel reality, and livestream on open social media their breaking into the seat of government.

WASHINGTON ― A right-wing West Virginia lawmaker who stormed the U.S. Capitol during an insurrectionist attack in support of President Donald Trump’s losing reelection campaign will face charges, a federal official said Friday.

Derrick Evans, a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates who livestreamed himself invading the U.S. Capitol but claims he “committed no criminal act,” will face charges, an official with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia said. The case was expected to appear on a court docket on Friday.

The charge was an indication that federal officials would use social media posts and other evidence to go after the insurrectionists even though they were allowed to leave the Capitol Building without being arrested and processed.

Also charged was Richard Barnett, who posed for photos inside House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office and gave an interview identifying himself. Another defendant who had 11 Molotov cocktails in a truck with Alabama license plates will also face charges, officials said.

Ken Kohl, the No. 2 official in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, said the investigation was the highest priority for the Justice Department. “We literally have hundreds of prosecutors and agents working from three command centers on what is really a 24-7 operation,” he said. “It is active, it is fluid, it is evolving.”

Simon & Schuster has canceled its plans to publish a book by Sen. Josh Hawley, a Missouri Republican who sought to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election both before and after a pro-Trump mob attacked the Capitol building on Wednesday.

An hour after the announcement was made Thursday, Hawley responded with a Twitter statement calling the move "Orwellian," denouncing "cancel culture" and concluding, "We'll see you in court!"

Hawley, 41, was the first senator to object to the certification of the electoral vote for President-elect Joe Biden in key states — a typically ceremonial process that morphed into an hours-long occupation culminating in the death of four people.

His book, “The Tyranny of Big Tech,” was scheduled for publication in June. The company decided to drop the book in the wake of growing outrage on social media.

"After witnessing the disturbing, deadly insurrection that took place on Wednesday in Washington, D.C, Simon & Schuster has decided to cancel publication of Senator Josh Hawley’s forthcoming book," Simon & Schuster said in a statement emailed by spokesperson Adam Rothberg.
