With offense flagging again is it time to add designated fielders to baseball. Not in the way you’re thinking, but by making maybe two guys fielding only specialists that don’t bat, and thereby shortening the batting order to seven men? That would get the big bats up 20% more often, meaning nearly 900 PA per season. Oh Gawd...are you trying to give "traditionalists" a stroke/heart attack?

If I wanted to do that I would have said three designated fielders and a six man line up. That’s the shortest line up you can have without having to bat while you’re on base. Baseball is indeed a game filled with tradition. I still wish pitchers batted, but they don’t…

Those that know me know that I hate greed, especially corporate greed. But with that said, it's nice to see that the Mets are making it a little easier for their fans by having select menu items for just $5 on Tuesdays for the remainder of the 2024 regular season. I'd like to see the Yankees and the rest of MLB follow the Mets lead.

Fwiw the World Series last year was Texas who started out 35-20, but ended 55-52 against 84 win Arizona. Yankees are still fine.

Detroit walks off the Dodgers for the second straight day. L.A. is another huge market team with a big payroll that has major pitching issues.

From MLB Rumors 7/17/24
Domingo German Opts Out Of Pirates Deal By Steve Adams | July 17, 2024 at 12:26pm CDT
Right-hander Domingo German was released by the Pirates this week, per the transaction log at MiLB.com. He’d been pitching with their Triple-A affiliate in Indianapolis. Robert Murray of FanSided reports that German exercised an opt-out clause in his contract, prompting the release. The Bucs remain open to bringing him back, per Murray, presumably on a new minor league pact.
German, 31, has started 10 games in Indy and pitched to a 5.36 ERA with a below-average 20.6% strikeout rate and a bloated 12.6% walk rate. However, a good portion of the damage against German came in 1 brutal outing that saw him yield 8 runs (7 earned) in just 5 frames. In 6 starts since that ugly outing, he’s logged a more palatable 3.60 ERA with slightly improved strikeout and walk rates of 22.7% and 10.9%.
German’s entire big league career has been spent in a Yankees uniform. He pitched parts of six seasons in the Bronx, logging 522 1/3 innings of 4.41 ERA ball while working primarily out of the starting rotation. He’s had a fair bit of big league success but also saw his time with the Yankees marred by off-the-field issues.
In 2020, German was suspended for 81 games under the MLB-MLBPA joint domestic violence policy. He did not pitch in the shortened 2020 season as a result. German also missed the final portion of the 2023 season after “voluntarily submitting to inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse” (as announced by the Yankees at the time) following an incident in which he was reportedly intoxicated in the clubhouse. Earlier in the 2023 season, he also served a 10-game suspension in 2023 after an umpire ruled that the pitcher had violated MLB’s foreign substance policy on the mound.
The Pirates are relatively deep in rotation options, even with Jared Jones, Bailey Falter and Johan Oviedo currently on the injured list. Pittsburgh’s rotation currently includes Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, Martin Perez, Quinn Priester and Marco Gonzales. Righty Luis Ortiz and top prospect Braxton Ashcraft give the Bucs further options, with Ashcraft in particular in the midst of a breakout season between Double-A and Triple-A. Falter is on the shelf with tendinitis in his left triceps and isn’t presently expected to be in for a lengthy absence. Jones was shut down for two weeks in early July after being diagnosed with a Grade 2 lat strain. It’s not yet clear when he’s expected to resume throwing off a mound, let alone return to the big league staff. Oviedo underwent Tommy John surgery in the offseason and will be out until 2025.

I had forgotten about German. Surprised he was released, thought he was still good enough to be a back end rotation guy for a team in need of SP.

Well, the Mets spend more than the Yanks, but all the revenues go to the payroll while only 1/2 for the Yanks. The Orioles spend a third of the Yanks payroll!!!!

Let's see the Orioles have the extended success like the Yankees have had and then see what their payroll is. Baltimore was garbage just a couple of years ago.

Wow, didn't realize the Yankees made over $100mm more than the second place Dodgers. However, one thing that might be a bit misleading about spend is that LT penalty isn't included. I read somewhere that without any more additions the Yanks are on the hook for a $62mm penalty. That would bring the spend up to 56%. It could be argued that is still a low percentage compared to other big market teams. I'm guessing a handful of other teams will also pay a penalty but also guessing most don't. I would also assume the money small market teams receive as a result of the revenue sharing penalty is not included in their revenue numbers.
