Well, the Mets spend more than the Yanks, but all the revenues go to the payroll while only 1/2 for the Yanks. The Orioles spend a third of the Yanks payroll!!!! Virtually the entire Orioles team is young, homegrown players. They've done an excellent job in drafting players. Yep, it will be interesting to see if the Birds can keep this team together. New ownership seems committed to winning.

the astros were another team that did the same thing.

Of course...still have to make the "right" picks and properly develop them. The O's have repeatedly demonstrated that ability over several years.

The Baltimore Orioles scouting department continues to show why they're arguably the best in baseball. While the Orioles' draft picks that have found success have typically been picked early in the draft cycle, they picked at No. 22 and No. 32 on Sunday night and hit their picks out of the park. Baltimore selected Vance Honeycutt out of North Carolina. The two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year and UNC's single-season home run record holder is a potential superstar. They also drafted Griff O'Ferrall out of the University of Virginia. O'Ferrall was the everyday shortstop for the Collegiate National Team and put together an impressive career at UVA. www.si.com/mlb/orioles/news/baltimore-orioles-named-winners-of-the-2024-mlb-draft-jon9

So your saying the Yankees could have had Gunnar? For grins, I went back to the 2019 draft to see who we selected before Henderson. We actually had two picks before he was selected. With the first we took Volpe who has a chance to be a good played but probably doesn't have the ceiling that Henderson has. With the 2nd, which was a competitive balance pick, we took pitche T. J Sikkema. He was part of the deal that allowed us to get Benintendi. Since being traded to the Royals he was selected by the Reds as a draft 5 player but hasn't had much of an impact. Hindsite is always 20/20 but Henderson would have been a really nice pick with either of our first two picks in that draft.

Not meant as a knock on Volpe, but IMO Henderson & Witt Jr. are in a class above him.

It would be interesting to see where the Birds had him ranked on their draft board and how high they might have taken him if they had the opportunity. There first pick that year was Rutschman who was the first overall pick and a pretty good one. Their player evaluation has been pretty good the last couple drafts.
