"Volpe's ghastly error that cost the Yankees on Sunday finally put everybody over the edge."I’ve made my opinion of Volpe clear, but I take issue with this. This isn't the first time we've heard this sort of thing…insert "Gleyber's" in place of "Volpe's". "...fans would trade the spectacular range plays for security in high-leverage moments."Such a silly thing to say. The writer also stated that 41 games is 42% of the season when it’s actually 25%. In reality, this is the first time I’ve ever seen Volpe accused of mental lapses. It was a horrible play, no doubt, but it wasn’t “the last straw” by any means. The only problem Volpe has is his offense, and it’s a big problem that needs to be solved…

I agreed with the offensive assessment but like you thought the defensive comments were way over the top. For starters, there’s no such thing as “security in high leverage situations”. But if you asked fans if they’d be OK with a SS who could be counted on to make “routine plays” but nothing more, pretty sure the answer would be a resounding NO…especially one who has been as unproductive offensively as Volpe has been this year. 10 OOA, 5 DRS, but we need more… more… More… MORE… always more… can pick about 10 errors (as many as Volpe has made this season to date) out in just this one article. If you’re going to be critical, at least be accurate…

It was a horrible play, no doubt, but it wasn’t “the last straw” by any means. I didn't see anything re "mental lapses". As Volpe said, his footwork was screwed up...a physical error...nothing "mental" about it.

Mark Belanger has been mentioned. In '69 & '73, years in which he won the GG, he made 23 errors. I wonder if any were in "high leverage situations"

To me, that was the mental aspect of that play not being made, as well as initially laying back on the ball (i.e., footwork).

A mental lapse, to me, is something like throwing to the wrong base, or running from 2B to 3B on a ball hit to the left side.

Yep, although the way Holmes couldn't find the strike zone, I give Volpe credit for not resting his head on 2nd base and taking a nap.
