And that despite his willingness to play anywhere they needed him… Some fans are fixated on OPS. High BA singles hitters who don't walk a lot are not gonna have a high OPS...Juan Pierre is an excellent example, and there are several others. You do understand that OPS includes hits ... Right? Hits are counted towards OBP OBP + SLG =OPS So (Decent Avg + No Walks) = Low OBP + Singles hitter = Shitty OPS = Shitty Offensive Player

Ugh. Mets live to see another day. Was really hoping they'd lose both games just for the laughs. Ah well.

I suppose I don't hear the trash talk between the fans, but even when I lived in NY I'd pull for them unless, of course, it had a negative effect for the Yanks. I thought '69 was great, and the '86 WS even better. I watched Game 6 in a sports bar named..."Fenway Park".

You do understand that OPS includes hits ... Right? Hits are counted towards OBP OBP + SLG =OPS So (Decent Avg + No Walks) = Low OBP + Singles hitter = Shitty OPS = Shitty Offensive Player OPS has no way to evaluate speed, taking extra bases on hits and the extra runs that score because of it. The way I see OPS is that it adds two unrelated numbers to give us the best way we have to evaluate offensive contributions, but that it is a flawed number. There is a way to include speed and the percentage of times a runner advances successfully, I’m sure, but I’m not privy to those numbers. We’d also need to know if the player has exceptional numbers in clutch* situations and a few other variables to know the entire story. That would be an ever-changing factor, but so is everything else. It’s also important to note that a hit is more valuable than a walk (except when leading off an inning). And a walk or hit to a speedy player is more valuable than it is to a lumbering player. What I’m saying is that I understand OPS completely, but I don’t worship at that alter, I simply observe it as I do each and every statistic. The reason OPS has become trendy is that it’s easy to utilize. Quick to figure and dump out in front of our eyes over and over again…pound it into those uneducated minds and they’ll eat it up, boys! … * clutch: it doesn’t exist until it happens, right?…

Mets got that magic going with winning these games out of their asses. I’m dumbfounded how a team that lost its ace for an entire season and a subpar year by Alonso can still make it to October baseball. It cringes me to say this but credit to our former bench coach Mendoza with keeping his team from sinking into the abyss back in June. Could destiny be on their side? I sure hope not. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
