Until I looked him up just now, I would not have thought that he pitched in 41 games for the Yanks in 2016. He seemed like more of a blip than that. I also was not aware that he was originally drafted by the Red Sox way back in 2005. It's been a long road for him to get to this level. I have no recollection of him ever existing. How shameful. He admires you greatly...

Man, the Royals sweep the Rays. Snell lit up in game two. The Yankees gain ground!

Mets beat the Reds 1-0 with a complete game from Syndergaard, who also hit a home run. Only the seventh time in baseball history that a pitcher has thrown a 9 inning shutout and hit a HR in a 1-0 game. I know that's a lot of qualifiers, but so be it.
Last time it was done was by Bob Welch in 1983. Before that was Juan Pizzaro in 1971, then Jim Bunning in 1965, then Early Wynn in 1959. I can't find the two earlier occasions.
Love these baseball oddities.

An 81-pitch complete game shutout for the Cubs' Kyle Hendricks against St. Louis this afternoon. I think the last time something like that happened, Christy Mathewson was pitching.

An 81-pitch complete game shutout for the Cubs' Kyle Hendricks against St. Louis this afternoon. I think the last time something like that happened, Christy Mathewson was pitching. Lol. I recall Greg Maddux tossing a 76-pitch complete game. I noticed that the record, which used to be listed at 57 pitches by Red Barrett seems to have been adjusted to 58 pitches. You have to wonder how these historians can find an extra pitch in a game from the ‘teens of nineteen...Somewhere, over a hundred years ago, someone(s) we’re keeping a very detailed score card... Now I’m reminded about our discussion the other day and my assumption that someone HAD to have had a longer st bat than Brandon Belts 22-pitch AB last summer. So let’s assume that happened in Red Barrett’s 58 pitch gem. Some guy, given the era it was probably a guy named “Heinie”, had a 23-pitch at bat. So that left 35 pitches for all the other hitters, right? In any event, that game featured an average at bat for Barrett’s opponents of 2.148 pitches per at bat...

Inger, sometimes I think they just make things up. But 50-something pitches for a complete game is amazing in any era. Thanks for reminding me of Maddux's 76-pitch masterpiece.

Remember in the 70's when Baltimore had all those great pitchers? Of course, in the 70’s they had a larger park and much better hitters and fielders, too. And Earl Weaver...

Pillar is now robbing guys in the National League. WOW. That's got to be play of the year so far. Even though he over-jumped it.
