if Gleyber in his 4th year is hitting about .200....like Bird is....and having 9 or 10 homers at this stage, like Bird is....then it will likely be time for the Yankees to move on from Gleyber....those are bad numbers, and particularly so from a corner spot... Show your math please. Explain how Bird is playing his fourth year in MLB with 551 career at bats? And, he has 11 home runs.

dang....I used to have quite an incisive memory, but the years have impacted that....I want to say Brian Taylor, but that may not be right....I'm thinking of the lefty phenom pitcher that got injured in a bar fight...…...what might have been with him.... Close. Brien Taylor. Not standard spelling. Sad, but got what he deserved. I don’t intend to be mean, but bars in the AM are like punching the time clock for trouble...

Even more, what if he could have stayed out of bars and settled for his wife instead of multiple bimbos on a nightly basis? I loved him as a child. I still admire his play now that I’m a senior citizen. But I can’t condone his lifestyle...Nor can I say what is right and wrong when you live that lifestyle...

inger….how would you rate or rank the 16 "original" ML franchises in terms of having the most (largest number) of high quality players?.....the Yankees and Cardinals probably come to mind first, but I wonder if the Tigers have not had as many as those two....the names start to roll off....Cobb, Crawford, Cochrane, Heilman, Gehringer, Greenberg, and on....plus I missed some...I just wondered if you wished to do a "ranking" just for discussion purposes...

I haven't given this any thought at all. Off hand, The Giants and Dodgers certainly have made a great showing, and sadly so have the Red Sox. Cleveland has had a lot of poor teams but there have been some really good players in there. The same could be said of the Cubs, too...the only reason I'm not tossing the Cards and Tigers into the mix is that you already nabbed them...I'm not discounting them...So now we're up to eight qualifying candidates. With more thought perhaps we can begin to eliminate a couple of teams fairly quickly (probably the last two I named, Cleveland and Chicago Cubs...But I don't want to pull the trigger too fast on them, let's let them live a while. After all, I'm sure Ernie Banks wants to play this out before sitting down, right???

Yeah. If we’re going to go to all the effort we may as well rank all eight of them. Shucks, I had enough trouble remembering them at first. I was only 7 when the first expansion hit in ‘61, so I had no memories of what you would call the good old days.
For me, I might as well be ranking various dinosaurs, so please help steer me in the right direction if I veer off course... (:

(: dang....I forget what a kid you are...in the National league, there is continuity, even with the Boston Braves...through Milwaukee and Atlanta....in the American the A's have good continuity, and only two changing with the Senators becoming the Twins (I think), and the Browns becoming the Orioles....if we just took those 16 teams (or 8 if that's the way you want to do it)...and try to rank them in some way.....maybe start with numbers...titles..HOF players...awards....there will be no perfect way, but it's better if it's somewhat subjective anyway.... The train of thought was I was thinking about injuries to players...then Hal Newhouser and how tough he was when he first came up...then about one of my all-time favorites in Charlie Gehringer, and what a great player he was....JWild took me to task once in some all-time list when I suggested Gehringer….I don't think he realized what a player Charlie was...….then the thoughts of all the greats that played for Detroit....it could be fun, and I would like to hear your thoughts...

I think the place to start with an excercise like this is to name a 25 man roster for each team. I would suggest we fill each infield position for each team with a starter and a back up. Including catcher, tgat’s 10 players. Then add five OF so we have two back up OF. That will leave leave ten pitchers, a five man rotation and a five man bullpen. Kind of going old school there, but more years were spent with 8-10 man pitching staffs than with today’s 12-13, so I think that makes sense. For the same reason, if we want a DH, we’ll have to announce a position for him...
How does that sound? ? ?
If you like it, we can open a new thread with an appropriate name. Of course all are invited to join in. Anyone can feel free to name a twenty five man roster (under the stated rules) for any team they feel they can represent, and the masses can decide on roster changes.
Yes, we’ll likely get a lot of Yankee rosters named, but that won’t hurt a thing...
Kaybli, can you please make this post the start of a new thread? I have no idea how without starting this post over... (:
We can call it All Time Best/ Each original team...
Or He Amy Ha, Jr.. Doesn’t really matter.

One other thought, players can qualify for more than one team, but not for more than two. The performance for any team the player is chosen for must be for at least five years and represent the best for the position for that team...
Are we all aboard with that???

I found a very useful tool on Baseball Reference. If you look up a franchise by names, they have a tab you can click that will show the top 24 players in the teams history (by who's ranking, I don't know). That doesn't mean you will get a full roster out of the players, but it does give a good start with some good ideas. I started looking at the Twins last night. You'll need to look the team up by the most recent incarnation to use the feature...
