Kaprielian and Fowler not doing too hot either. Kaprielian really has done nothing. Update on Former Yankees Top Prospect is Depressing
Sadly, Kaprielian hasn't pitched in a game since 2016 after undergoing Tommy John surgery back in April 2017. Kaprielian still had great upside at the time, which is why he was one of the key pieces in the Sonny Gray trade with the Oakland Athletics last July.
Kaprielian is now pitching in instructional league games for Oakland, and the early reports on the uber-talented pitcher aren't very positive.
James Kaprielian's first inning today: 89-91, still nasty in on righties. Slider 83-85 with inconsistent shape & release feel. Obviously we're im wait-and-see mode as far as the stuff is concerned but it's clearly not back yet. — Eric Longenhagen (@longenhagen) October 5, 2018

That is really too bad for him, he seemed like a legit prospect. It reinforces the point that until they make it they're just lottery tickets. I'm sure Chicago wishes they could have gotten Cashman to take someone other than Torres for Chapman but more often than not these kids don't achieve their promise. They gave Oakland a pretty solid package for Gray and it hasn't worked out for either team.

Wow that sucks...I loved Kaprielian. Crazy that hes thrown under 60 innings in four years since being drafted. Cant take anything for granted in this game.

I'm glad this spammer brought the Sony Gray thread back to the top. We can use this for Gray trade chatter instead of dumping it it the miscellaneous thread.

Report: Yankees, Reds finalizing trade for Sonny Gray
The exact return has not been confirmed, but Heyman hears that the Yankees will receive top infield prospect Shed Long and a draft pick in exchange for Gray, with an as-yet unnamed third player possibly involved as well.

That’s more than I expected if that’s the return. Given how he performed, the other off the field issues with him, getting back anything is a win.

Shed Long Scouting Report Hitting | Shed Long has a lot of the things you want to see in a guy with a good hit tool: He uses the entire field. He can and does hit the ball hard to all parts of the field. And he’s got some speed to help him beat out some infield hits. With all of that said, there’s some concern about his swing among some scouts. I’d grade his hit tool as average, but have spoken to some scouts who have him as a below-average to slightly below-average hit tool guy.
Power | He has average power that plays to both left and right field.
Speed | He’s got above-average speed.
Defense | He’s a fringe-average fielder right now, but could turn to an average to slightly above-average fielder in the future at second base as he continues to get more reps.
Arm | His arm is fringe-average. It plays fine at second base but would probably be stretched elsewhere on the dirt.
Offense is what sets Shed Long apart from most second base prospects. He projects to hit for average and for power, while also being a solid defender. If he turns into the guy that his scouting report says he could, you’re looking at a quality starting second baseman in the Major Leagues who could hit .270 with 20 homers, 15 steals and solid defense. The power may even play up a little bit from there at his peak.
There are some concerns about his swing, though. As noted, some scouts are a little lower on the hit tool than others. The uppercut in his swing is usually brought up as something that will help the power play, but also keep the hit tool from playing. Most still believe he can start in that scenario, though.
For Shed Long the biggest question about his future revolves around where he will play. At second base he is seemingly blocked right now by Scooter Gennett and Nick Senzel. That can be both good or bad. It does mean there won’t be any need to rush him before he’s ready and should allow him to fully develop his game. But it also means he could still be in the minor leagues if and when he’s ready because he could have nowhere to play.

Gray figures to step into a prominent role within the Reds’ rotation, which is likely to be a mix of recently-acquired left-hander Alex Wood and right-handers Tanner Roark, Luis Castillo, Anthony DeSclafani, and Tyler Mahle, among several others.
And we bitch about OUR rotation??? Holy Moly...

Even if Sonny Gray wins the Cy Young Award the next three seasons and Shed Long is working in a long shed as a longshoreman by the age of 25, this is still a good deal for the Yankees. Sonny Gray is a talented pitcher, but it just wasn't happening at Yankee Stadium. His home/road splits were extreme even by the standards of other Yankee flame-out pitchers who were good except when pitching for the Yanks.
Last season Gray pitched 15 games at home and 15 on the road. At home, his ERA was 6.98, WHIP 1.904, K/BB ratio 1.29.
On the road, his ERA was 3.17, WHIP 1.115, K/BB ratio 3.55. That is just psychotic.
He has a career ERA at Yankee Stadium of 6.35. And against the Red Sox, his record is 1-6 with a 6.64 ERA. Shed Long isn't even a pitcher, and he would do better than that.
A couple of pitchers I looked up who had decent careers except when pitching for the Yankees had nowhere near such wild home/road issues. Not even the infamous Ed Whitson, who actually managed a 126-123 record in a 15-year career. In 1986, the year he supposedly was unable to pitch at Yankee Stadium, he sucked everywhere, not just at home. His horrific home ERA of 7.52 was matched with a road ERA of 7.08. So there were lots of places he couldn't pitch that year.
Kenny Rogers had a very good career record of 219-156. His career adjusted ERA+ was 107. During his two years with the Yankees, it was 91, the worst of any of the six teams he pitched for. But in his two seasons with the Yankees, 1996-97, he actually had a better ERA at home than on the road -- 4.27/5.32 in 96, and 5.57/5.72 in 97.
Denny Neagle had a career 124-92 record and an adjusted ERA+ of 105. Like Rogers, he also pitched for six teams in his career, and also like Rogers, his worst ERA+ -- by far -- was with the Yankees, a miserable 83. We only had to suffer through Neagle for about half of the 2000 season (the Yanks got him in mid-season from the Reds.) With the Reds, he was 8-2 with a 3.52 ERA. With the Yankees, he was 7-7 with a 5.81 ERA. With the Yanks, his home ERA was 5.20. On the road it was 6.40.
So even if Gray goes on to a Hall of Fame career -- which he won't -- I will never blame Cashman for making this trade. It had to be done.

And we bitch about OUR rotation??? Holy Moly... Inger, I hope the Reds are never our basis of comparison. But having said that, I actually like what they are trying to do to inject some life into that deadly team. They have picked up Gray, Wood and Roark, all of whom are capable of pitching well. I would not be at all shocked if Gray had a really good year for them. Plus picking up Puig and Kemp -- at least they are trying. Lots of guys with one year left on their contracts. Maybe they get enough play for the payday performances to put a respectable team on the field and help poor Joey Votto, maybe the most under-publicized elite hitter I have ever seen.

Speaking of the Reds -- and I will not make a habit of it -- I see where their long-time announcer Marty Brennaman is retiring after next season. He started doing their games in 1974, and the guy he replaced was an up and coming Al Michaels. Michaels was there from 1971-1973.
One of Michaels's broadcast partners was another long-time Reds announcer, HOF pitcher Waite Hoyt, who began with them in 1942 after he retired as a player. So a still very-active Al Michaels called games (albeit for just one season) with a guy who pitched for the 1927 Yankees and had his first full season in 1919 with the Red Sox.
I can remember listening to Hoyt on WLW, the big flamethrower in Cincy. Much of his repertoire consisted of telling Babe Ruth stories, and he was in fact one of the Babe's main drinking buddies.
Al Michaels broadcast partners with the Reds also included Joe Nuxhall and Charlie Jones, who I associate with calling AFC games, I am guessing lots of Bengals games.
