Gray figures to step into a prominent role within the Reds’ rotation, which is likely to be a mix of recently-acquired left-hander Alex Wood and right-handers Tanner Roark, Luis Castillo, Anthony DeSclafani, and Tyler Mahle, among several others.
And we bitch about OUR rotation??? Holy Moly... Inger, I hope the Reds are never our basis of comparison. But having said that, I actually like what they are trying to do to inject some life into that deadly team. They have picked up Gray, Wood and Roark, all of whom are capable of pitching well. I would not be at all shocked if Gray had a really good year for them. Plus picking up Puig and Kemp -- at least they are trying. Lots of guys with one year left on their contracts. Maybe they get enough play for the payday performances to put a respectable team on the field and help poor Joey Votto, maybe the most under-publicized elite hitter I have ever seen. I agree that the Reds are attempting to improve, albeit in a non-conventional manner. There is something positive to say about being non-conventional in a market that has become quite predictable in other cities. It sort of reminds of Moneyball in that the Reds are finding valuable pieces without having to commit to them long term while their young core develops. In a sketchy division, that ploy may indeed allow them to become quite competitive. In addition, although I find it difficult to accept that players play harder in “salary drive” seasons pre-free agency, it does appear that there is some truth to it. As a GM I wouldn’t want a player that presented that way for concern of how lazy he may become after obtaining long term contractural security...

The Reds have a good everyday lineup, but the rotation is so horrendous that they had no chance of competing for a playoff spot. Adding Gray, Wood & Roark has to improve their chances, since they can't get any worse.

Al Michaels broadcast partners with the Reds also included Joe Nuxhall and Charlie Jones, who I associate with calling AFC games, I am guessing lots of Bengals games. As a Penn State football fan, I'll always remember Charlie Jones as the play by play announcer for the '87 Fiesta Bowl between the Lions and Miami. That was one of the most watched college football games of all time, as Penn St. upset the heavily favored Canes to win the national title.

Anytime I hear or read Joe Nuxhall’s name I shiver at the thought of being 15 years and 10 months old and standing on a major-league baseball mound charged with the responsibility of pitching to grown men that have major league experience. I believe that (youngest MLB player) record to be one of the least likely to be broken...
It would be amazing enough to be one of the position players, even as a pinch runner or pinch hitter, but to be the pitcher? Unbelievable!
Just imagine yourself doing that at fifteen years of age...

Trade being held up because Cincy wants to sign him to an extension.

Trade being held up because Cincy wants to sign him to an extension. Maybe we can talk Cincy into taking Ellsbury too, if he’ll sign an extension... (:

If they like him enough to extend him I highly doubt they will walk from the deal over this. They’re not giving up much.

Gray. Ellsbury. Here’s a lesson. Players that don’t work out well are easy to obtain, hard to keep, and even harder to dispose of...As arduous as the Gray trade has been, Ellsbury is still here...

I think he’s here until he comes off the DL. And then he either contributes or they release him. So long as he’s on the DL he’s just dead money offset by insurance.

In the best scenario he plays very well for two weeks and we trade him for anyone with a heartbeat before the wheels fall off...

Just when I was getting attached to Shed Long. Whatever happens, even if it's for the proverbial bag of baseballs, it's a good trade.

Pete Giftopolous picked off Vinnie Intercepteverde to seal it. Penn State had DJ Dozier, Blair Thomas and Steve Smith as RBs. Best defensive players were Shane Conlan and Andre Collins. Besides Testaverde, Miami had Michael Irvin and Bennie Blades and Alonzo Highsmith among others. Charlie Jones, Jimmy Cefalo, Bob Griese and Ahmad Rashad called the game.
