Because they will lose their 1st round draft pick if they sign one of them, I thought. Plus they clear space off the 40 man roster.

www.msn.com/en-us/sports/mlb/yankees-trade-gray-to-reds-acquire-stowers-from-mariners/ar-BBSz1La?li=BBnb7Kz Wow they traded Shed Long already. Update 4:45 PM: It’s apparently three-way deal, as Jeff Passan reports that the Yankees have traded Shed Long to the Mariners in exchange for Josh Stowers. Ranked as the Mariners’ number 10 prospect per MLB Pipeline, Stowers is a center fielder who was selected in the second round of the 2018 MLB Draft. Here’s an excerpt from their scouting report: Stowers took off once he smoothed out his right-handed stroke and took a more direct path to the ball. He’s at his best when he tries to hit line drives to all fields, and while he isn’t a power hitter, he has enough pop to produce 12-15 homers per year as a pro. Stowers has an extremely patient approach and a knack for stealing bases.Scouts give Stowers solid-to-plus grades for his speed, yet there’s mixed opinion on whether he can stick in center field at the next level. It’s essential that he does so to profile as a regular, because he doesn’t have the power to profile on a corner. Stowers’ below-average arm will push him to left field if he can’t stay in center.

Meh. The Yanks didn't get as much back for Gray as they'd given up to get him...Having seen neither, I can't tell which of Long and Stowers is the better prospect. But it certainly seems that Long is, at this point, the better hitter. And he swings a LH bat, to boot. Long was more high rated in the Reds' system than Stowers was in the Mariners' system and (I think) the Reds' are believed to have the better farm system. So???? The "competitive balance" pick and the money saved would appear to be the keys to the deal. Stowers seems to be a decent prospect (his profile puts me in mind of Austin Jackson), but that's all. I wonder if Cashman's got more moves up his sleeve. Is the trade "addition by subtraction?"

Fowler looks like a 5th OF, at best, Mateo has been terrible at AAA and Kaprielian's career has been derailed by injuries. Cashman got back what's going to be two highly drafted players and dumped the salary of a player that couldn't pitch at Yankee Stadium.

Too bad Yankee54 isn’t here to preach to us about the gap power that Austin Jackson that was going to make him a premier player when the balls started clearing the fences...On second thought, I take that back...way back... way, way back...

While you're correct about the current status of the players, I believe I am correct, as well. Mateo, alone, was at least as highly thought of as is Stowers. Then there's the other two. Prospects are never sure things. Teams trade on the basis of their potential.

Long can't play defensive, has an uppercut swing with more power but ML pitching would expose him, plus he would need to be added to the 40 man roster. Yankees need more OF depth at the lower levels. Great job by Cash Money, plus a draft pick.

Good! And if he's Austin Jackson, part 2...trade him away, part 2...
