Just to be clear, for all of the whining coming out of the agents for these two players and the MLBPA, the reason these guys haven't signed is by their choice. Harper had a 10 yr $300m offer from Washington at the start of free agency. The way these guys have been talking all offseason you'd think they're being oppressed. Meanwhile, Philly is about to back up the truck so the candlelight vigil for Bryce Harper may finally be over. The bitching is because they expected to be fawned over, with kiss after kiss landing on their asses. They’ve had to deal with unexpected stress. Poor babies. I feel a bit worse for the marginal players who have struggled to find deals...but just a bit...

Good spot for him. Nobody will notice if he hustles or not. www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2019/02/18/manny-machado-san-diego-padres/2905740002/Manny Machado, one of the biggest prizes on the free agent market, has finally received a contract proposal that may suit his demands. The San Diego Padres submitted an eight-year offer to Machado worth between $240 million and $280 million – which is heavily deferred – two people with knowledge of the talks told USA TODAY Sports.

I don't want either Harper or Machado especially to the long term contracts they want so it won't bother me when (as I think is certain) we get neither. I prefer to stick with players who came up through the Yankee system rather than free agents from other teams which IMHO have not worked well generally for the Yankees. I digress. The Yanks have hit on more free agents than missed, noetsi. The problem is that it’s easier to remember the ends of their Yankee days than the best of days... Cc Reggie Catfish Giambi They’re great pieces of the team’s history... If I had time I would go through all the misses [Randy Johnson, Carl Pavano, to me Arod, Collins in the 80's, its a really really long list]. I think we miss far more often than we hit.

Randy Johnson was a not a free agent. If you're going to take the time to go through all of their free agent misses, you might want to first start by knowing which ones were free agents. Or, you might as well add some players who didn't even play for the Yankees, just to give the list more heft.

The players themselves have not been whining. I could care less about the bitching from their agents, who by the way hate each other. At the end of the day, both players will get most of what they desired, albeit probably from teams that they would rather not play for.

Verlander is one of the players that's been whining, however, he's a free agent after the 2019 season, so maybe he has reason to cry?

Cc Reggie Catfish Giambi They’re great pieces of the team’s history... Mike Mussina, for my money, is the best free agent signing the Yankees ever made. Even though they got him after the prime of his career, he was just consistently great. Knowing now that the guy who won the Cy did so more through chemistry than ability, Moose should have won the award in the first year of his deal with the Yanks, which is pretty solid validation for a FA contract. If the Yanks had more postseason success during his tenure, I think he gets remembered very differently. Also don't forget Dave Winfield. He was great as a Yankee even factoring in the length and relative expense of his deal. And if not for the owner being batshit crazy to the point of breaking the law in the course of feuding with Winfield, maybe it ends better than it did. My list was certainly far from complete, and was certainly disputable at that. I was hoping for some intelligent fan or fans to chime in with the many additional great names...Thanks for helping...

Machado signs with the Padres. 10 years, 300 million All the fuss and he ends up on a team that's not even close to contending. At least he's getting paid.

At least he's getting paid. Hey dont forget that tmarino told us that the Pads fleeced the Yankees in the Rule 5 draft with Luis Torrens and we would be ruing that day for years. Machado was always going for top offer. None of the reports suggested he cared about going to a contender. Given what we know about his attitude, Im not surprised by that.

A lot of the players have - CC has on his podcast recently and I like CC a lot. To some degree I get it. The MLBPA let ownership take on too much power over the last couple of decades and now they want to shift the balance. Unless they’re prepared to force a work stoppage they need to be realistic in that they can’t inflect that kind of change overnight.
