Zero downside. Best case, he can bridge the gap at SS until Didi is healthy and then provide pop off the bench. Worst case, he is hurt and they paid very little for him. And this move has nothing to do with Machado. Machado is not coming here to play SS. If the Yanks sign Machado, it is with the plan he is playing 3B and they will trade Andujar for pitching. Agree with this. If he looks like trash in ST then no harm no foul. Also cant hurt to have him imparting defensive wisdom on the young guys, especially Torres as a MINF.

I wonder if he can play first base in a pinch (sorry, inger for coming on like an anyone but Bird guy😉). I'd think at this stage of his career, in need of a job, he'd play anywhere he can get time in...Want me to play first base? Hell, I'll COACH first base if you want for $550K...

He had surgery on both heels, hamstring and ankle issues and is 34 years old. Of course we had a guy named Jeter that played the position at 40, right?

All good points but the ankle and heel surgeries were to remove bone spurs. I dont know much about the nature of bone spurs and the fact that they made him miss the whole year is bad but wouldnt this not be structural issues to those body parts now that the spurs are gone? Would think that no longer having the bone spurs, even having gone under the knife, would help.

Well he didn't cost much!!!
I had my Crutches/Walkers ready to send to the Yankees for CC & Gardner; will re-pack the box and add a wheelchair for Tulo.
Can only hope for MIRACLES when it comes to these three TRUE RETREADS (No Sandman here).
Making all the right moves to beat the RS, huh???
I have my Vomit Can handy for when THEY re-sign Walker.

So it’s clear what Tulo’s role will be. He’ll fill in for Gregorious. In so doing he will play something close to his annual quota of games, unless he’s injured first. Of course if the team signs Machado and can’t make an acceptable deal to trade Andujar away, then Machado may play SS and Tulo could play late inning defense at third base, or SS with Machado moving to third for the late innings.
Now, if Machado doesn’t sign with the Yankees and Tulo’s range has diminished, he could also play second base while Torres fills in at SS. Then of course we have the additional concern that Greg Bird may continue to wither and die on the vine, in which case Tulo could enter into a platoon at first base with Voit because we saw last season what a great idea that was when we platooned Walker and Austin.
There’s also a chance he could fill in on the outfield corners if we have an injury at an opportune time when he doesn’t have an injury of his own. Or if we happen to get banged up at catcher or need an emergency starting or relief pitcher we could see him take the mound.
Or... maybe we’ll just send him home... (:
In spite of the tongue in cheek commentary here, I like the signing and hope he’s useful for us...Good bench players with HR pop are not easy to come by, and can be a terrific advantage...

He cost $550,000. Basically a roll of pennies in the grand scheme if he sticks. He’s cheap for a reason. He’s chronically hurt and 34 years old. Pretty much all there is to say.

But there is no way he’ll play even one inning in CF...

Even if Tulo rebounds to a .270/25 season, he was a sunk cost that simply had no place on a rebuilding team. It’s the exact opposite scenario of Ellsbury on the Yankees. I’ve wished often that the Uankees would DFA him so he didn’t block us from getting a more useful player (meaning pretty much any player who is still able to trudge to the plate or stand in the field on occasion...Sunk cost, and he’ll never be worth what he’s paid. Probably a nice guy with the best intentions, but pay him and send him on his way...

I think Tulu still believes he can be a good player. I think Jacoby knows his useful days are over as far as being a starter. I think they are both awesome guys and much better athletes than I ever was and would be cool to hang with.

Reclamation projects Eric Chavez and Kerry Wood were both almost exactly Tulowitzki's age when they made short-duration but significant contributions to the Yankees. Obviously that doesn't mean the same thing will apply here. He is five years removed from his last great season -- kind of like Chavez was -- when he was on a HOF career track.
The odds for real success are low, clearly. But this is an easy guy to root for -- he has always wanted to play for the Yankees and as we know his idol was The Captain. If he can even give the Yanks 60-90 days of league average play -- by no means a sure thing -- this will be a good signing. I am all in favor of storybook endings, and rarely in recent years have I wanted one as much as this one. All in for Team Tulo.
