Yankees likely won’t have Edwin Encarnacion until the playoffs
“Just something he and I talked about. He hit on the field and looked good, but I think mentally he is not over the hump yet,’’ Aaron Boone said of Encarnacion, who hasn’t played since suffering a left oblique injury on Sept. 12 in the first game of a doubleheader in Detroit. “Obviously it is not something to tweak because if he tweaks it again he is lost for the postseason.’’
Boone’s belief is Encarnacion will be able to play in Game 1 of the ALDS, which is scheduled to start next Friday night at Yankee Stadium against the Twins.
Boone said it would have been ideal to get Encarnacion at-bats during the three-game series against the Rangers this weekend. But that isn’t likely to happen.
“That isn’t the most important thing. The most important thing is that he is healthy,’’ Boone said.
With four days to get ready for the ALDS after the regular season ends Sunday, the Yankees believe there is time to get Encarnacion comfortable enough to be the DH in Game 1.
“If we have to simulate at-bats during the week, we can do that,’’ said Boone, whose club has an optional workout at the Stadium on Tuesday and mandatory workouts Wednesday and Thursday.
Boone sensed Encarnacion is able to hit but isn’t letting it completely go.
“He is feeling good, feeling strong, but I think there is a little bit of trepidation of letting it go like he knows he needs to,’’ said Boone, who used Mike Ford (2-for-3, HR and four RBIs) as the DH and the slumping Luke Voit (0-for-5 and 3 K’s) at first Friday night. “You wouldn’t see it watching him hit. His batting practices have been good. Listening to him and talking to him, he certainly understands what is at stake here.’’

Come on, what is the likelihood that our players would end the season on the injured list?

Twins injuries:
EHIRE ADRIANZA, INF/OF
Injury: Right oblique strain.
Prognosis: Adrianza missed the Twins’ final 16 games after suffering an oblique injury while swinging at a pitch. The switch-hitter has been progressing of late, but is doubtful to be on the Twins’ ALDS roster.
Quote: “I think AD is probably a little bit behind everyone else, although he’s doing well,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told the St. Paul Pioneer Press last weekend. “He’s been swinging. I believe one side of the plate is still a little bit better than the other. He’s not 100 percent at this point, so we’re going to keep letting him heal and we’ll see how he is by the middle of (the) week.”
* * *
LUIS ARRAEZ, 2B/3B
Injury: Grade 1 right ankle sprain
Prognosis: A .334 hitter over 92 games as a rookie this season, Arraez injured an ankle last Saturday when he collided with a teammate while trying to catch a pop-up in front of the pitcher’s mound. He’s in a walking boot and questionable to be ready for the playoffs. If Arraez can’t play, often-used vet Jonathan Schoop will be the Twins’ ALDS starter at second base.
Quote: “We’re going to do as much treatment as you can possibly do on someone between now and this Friday, and then we’ll see where we’re at,” Baldelli told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
* * *
CJ CRON, 1B
Injury: Right thumb inflammation.
Prognosis: Cron was on the IL from July 6 to July 16 and from July 22 to Aug. 3 due to his thumb, which has been sore throughout the second half. That’s led to less production and just 54 September at-bats. Cron will be on the Twins’ ALDS roster and probably starting most or all of the games, but Marwin Gonzalez will be a candidate to get a start at first and/or be a defensive replacement.
Quote: “C.J.’s been dealing with this for a very long time,” Baldelli told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. “I’d like to say it’s getting better. It’s probably not getting better, and he kind of pretends like he’s doing OK, and he mans up and he goes and plays and he continues to swing.”
* * *
MAX KEPLER, RF
Injury: Left shoulder strain.
Prognosis: Kepler is expected to be leading off and playing center field in the playoffs after ending the regular season with no at-bats and one pinch-running appearance since last starting on Sept. 14. He’s been swinging pain free of late and could have played last weekend, but the Twins opted to limit him to pre-game hitting and fielding to play it safe.
Quote: “I think we’re going to continue to monitor his workouts and make sure that he’s getting better (and then) let’s see if he sinks or swims,” Baldelli told MLB.com.
MARWIN GONZALEZ, RF/1B
Injury: Right oblique tightness.
Prognosis: The Twins believe Gonzalez will return for Game 1 from an injury that’s kept him out of their lineup since Sept. 22. He’s likely to start most or all of the ALDS games in right field while possibly seeing some action at first base, too.
Quote: “(Gonzalez) has a good feel for his body and knows what he needs to do to get ready,” Baldelli told reporters.

[ Then, as the interview ended, Baldelli stubbed his toe on a dugout support pole. While grabbing his toe, he hit his head on the same pole, and strained his wrist while attempting to support himself on the pole to avoid the fall that he took against the dugout railing that injured his back. He will be in his customary suit of armor and several casts, bandages, and braces while managing the games. He may need a substitute for a few innings while he’s in the clubhouse whirlpool...
