Albert Belle shouldn't count either, because the man had no living brain cells... (: But boy could he mash That he could. Sadly, given his personality disorders and the seasons he played in, I have to view his numbers with some suspicion. He had to be a real turd to go from a .281/23/103 season in 2000 to a pariah in 2001 at only 34. He should have had a lot of baseball left in him. I don’t know if anyone else ever had 50+ 2B and 50 HR in a season, but big Al did it in the mid 90’s...

At least according to the nice people at SABR. I thought Mantle might have done it, but he never came really close on the doubles side. The downside of hitting all those 500 foot HRs mixed in with the substantial number of 450 foot flyouts in the Yankee Stadium of his day. For sure Belle was a disturbed human being. It's hard to find many of his teammates with good things to say about him. And impossible to find any reporters who did. His numbers were at least worthy of HOF consideration, but he was so detested that he never managed more than a handful of votes before falling off the ballot. Sad, because he was an awesome offensive force on the field. And I guess an offensive force as a person as well.

BTW, I believe it was hip issues that ended his career. At least that is the story.

NYT article on Joey Belle. Skip Bertman was a hell of a coach and athletic director. His players had to toe the line. Miss that guy. NYT Article on Albert Belle

Cant believe I never heard of this "Joey" thing with Albert Belle. Maybe you are too young to remember that he started out playing under that name. I assume it came from his middle name of Jojuan.

I think I “get it” now. If I came out of the womb and somebody told me that one of my names was going be Jojuan, I’d start cursing, kicking, projectile green vomit, projectile green defecation immediately...

I have to confess that after the second half of last season I’ve been sort of skittish about the lad...Maybe there was more to that second half than just tipping his pitches. If your stuff is good enough and located well enough a hitter that knows what’s coming might still have trouble squaring your pitches up...He wasn’t locating well at all and was getting squashed... Let’s hope May doesn’t turn into December...or two years from May...

I think we need to seriously consider cyborgs.

I think we need to seriously consider cyborgs. Would they compete for the Cyborg Young Award?...

I wonder if there is a rule against cyborgs in the agreement with the players.
