No opt-out at all, per Harper's request. 13 year deal! Yeah, I just read that on ESPN. I am shocked at no opt-out and 13 years. Holy cow. Less AAV than Machado, but apparently his goal was to top Stanton's $325 million total package. Sheesh. Harper did sacrifice some AAV for the security of a 13 year deal and a guaranteed $330 million. We should all get to make such tough decisions.

Good point, Joe. Also, the Angels could well be moving into a new stadium at around the same time, so it would help to have their by far biggest star to market. Trout is a historically great player, but I don't see him play as often as I would like because there are only so many hours in the day to devote to baseball, the Angels are not in general a compelling team to me, and because he plays most of his games in the Pacific Time Zone so only insomniacs like Kaybli and Inger can watch him on a regular basis. I think I'm the only dude who enjoys it when the Yankees go out to the west coast to play their games. No, you have “help” in that category. I can get my yard work done and typically only go to bed a little later than usual, although sometimes rather hyped up when we win a good battle...and I usually only get through 11 or 12 innings if they go into extras...

Wow...a 20 milllion dollar bonus check. Must be a delirious feeling.

Wow...a 20 milllion dollar bonus check. Must be a delirious feeling. I once got a $20,000 end of fiscal year bonus. I damned near pooped myself. I think my employer did, too. And immediately afterward they announced that they would not be offering the same sales contest next year (or ever again as it turned out)...

He wasn’t kidding
“We're going into this expecting to spend money," Middleton told USA Today Sports this week. "and maybe even be a little bit stupid about it."

I thought Harper was just stringing the Phils along, but they win the right to overpay him. What would Trout get if he was a free agent right now? Presumably this takes them out of the conversation if Trout becomes available next year, so that’s good news.

For those who need to know, the breakdown on Harper's contact: I’m dumbfounded by this one. I have a feeling that the Phillies were bidding against themselves once this got past year ten, and once it broke the $300M barrier...I think they went a bit stupid to make sure they closed the deal. Spending that kind of money, I would expect “Super Harper” the one that shows up some years to hit .330 or so every year. I’d also be pretty upset in the years that “Out-of-Sync” Harper hits .249...Not to mention the years that “Boo-Boo” Harper plays in about 100 games... At least he’ll be “cheap” from age 37-39...$22M is clown money, bro. If you don’t believe me, ask Jakie Ellsbury...

Some folks I know this the structure of the Harper contract, keeping them well below the luxury tax puts them firmly in play for Trout.

I wasn’t excited about Machado or Harper but Trout on the Yankees sounds nice to me, even given what it would cost. To me he’s different.

I think the magic number for Boras and Harper was 325 million, which is what Stanton received from the Marlins and was the record for largest total contract handed out.
