For those who need to know, the breakdown on Harper's contact: I’m dumbfounded by this one. I have a feeling that the Phillies were bidding against themselves once this got past year ten, and once it broke the $300M barrier...I think they went a bit stupid to make sure they closed the deal. Spending that kind of money, I would expect “Super Harper” the one that shows up some years to hit .330 or so every year. I’d also be pretty upset in the years that “Out-of-Sync” Harper hits .249...Not to mention the years that “Boo-Boo” Harper plays in about 100 games... At least he’ll be “cheap” from age 37-39...$22M is clown money, bro. If you don’t believe me, ask Jakie Ellsbury... The chances of Harper remaining productive past year 7 or 8 are slim. And, if he isn't productive, it'll mean the Phils are going to have to fork over $100M for nothing. But I think they'll be very happy, anyway. Assuming good health, they're going to be a perennial contender, now, something that's not been true about them for a long time. That'll sell tickets.

Why do you think he wont be productive past year 7 or 8 of the contract? He will only be 33 years old in year 8 of this contract.

“For a while, no one was quite clear on the terms of Harper’s deal. Some reporters said there was an opt-out, others said there was not. Indeed, Harper’s contract will run without an opt-out or no-trade clause, per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
“No opt-outs?” one pitcher said. “Goddamn. Enjoy Philly!”

Not so sure about that. Some folks I know this the structure of the Harper contract, keeping them well below the luxury tax puts them firmly in play for Trout. That would be something. I wasn’t excited about Machado or Harper but Trout on the Yankees sounds nice to me, even given what it would cost. To me he’s different. Agreed having him in Yankee pinstripes would be incredible...my buddy tagged me in something from Philly sports radio that said Harper and Trout have been talking all offseason and he should be expected to sign with the Phils in 2 years. Obviously take that with a massive grain of salt but Trout is a huge Philly guy and if they are willing/able to spend the money they have to be a favorite.

Obviously take that with a massive grain of salt but Trout is a huge Philly guy and if they are willing/able to spend the money they have to be a favorite. Getting Trout, with all of the talent surrounding him, would be an off-the-charts move by the Yankees. Harper and Machado have Hall of Fame skills. Trout has ten greatest position players of all-time skills. It's true that Trout is a Philly guy, close friends with Carson Wentz, goes to every possible Eagles home game (and also shows up at Sixers and Flyers games.) He has the best house in his otherwise very modest hometown of Millville, NJ and actually lives there for most of the winter. Still, I don't know that that translates to the Phillies signing him. We kept hearing that Harper grew up a Yankees fan and wanted to play for them, but of course it takes two to tango. If Trout has any issues with the Angels, they don't seem to make their way into the media. Who knows? Almost everyone assumed that one if not both of Harper or Machado would sign with the Yankees. Philly media reported that Boras acknowledged that in addition to the money, the ballpark was a big factor in Harper's decision. He will hit a lot more HRs in Citizens Bank Park than he would in SF or LA, and that seemed to play an important role in his thinking.

I am not convinced Harper will produce what many thing he will. He might have the skills but he lacks the overwhelming desire which I think is central to being a truly elite player over time.
I am very happy we did not waste fortunes on him.

Oh Bryce. Dork. Maybe he means to rub DC’s face in “his” title...Good thing Philly isn’t paying him to be smart...
