Gio gave us a glimpse of what it is like to have great defense at third, which will only increase the scrutiny on Andujar's shortcomings. We all love his bat, and I know he is rusty, but this has been as bad a return in the field as we could have imagined. Having a strong infield defense with Gio at 3B, Torres at SS and DJ at 2B is huge for the pitching staff but I guess Cashman and Boone don't think infield is that important. I think it was a pretty easy decision to get Andujar into the lineup as soon as possible and it is pretty standard to rest or DH your starting catch day game after a night game. They’re not sitting Andujar or Sanchez to make sure Urshela is in the lineup and they shouldn’t.

Today should be the end of Trauchman in the starting lineup. Put Wade or Estrada in the OF, at least they have a pulse at the plate. Yeah, that was a depressing at bat. Wade? I’m not seeing much from Wade to suggest he can hit. Realistically both of these guys are moving on shortly. Wade back to the ukrility role he’s made for and Tauchman back to the minors.

To take one of the few hitters that's swinging the bat well and gives you gold glove defense out of the lineup for a guy who is a joke in the field was strange. They easily could have waited one more day to play Andujar so he could DH.

As far as the field goes, we know there is a world of difference in the fielding talent, but I’m far from confident that Urshela will continue to hit. That’s going to take some time to tell. I’m satisfied with the decision that was made. I think there were important lessons to be learned from the experience...

According to Boone (radio post game), Miggy will DH when Sanchez is behind the plate and play third when Sanchez is the DH on off days. Urshela will continue to play the field most of the time. Of course, that presupposes Gio continues to have good at bats.

Andujar is one of our best players and Urshela is a guy who has a lifetime 67 OPS+ at the major league level. If he’s found some magic potion that has transformed him in a sustainable way that’s great but that’s far from a given. I’m thankful for what he’s done filling in given that I didn’t expect him to make the major league team at all but I am not playing him ahead of the guy who should have won the Rookie of the Year award last season or Sanchez who at the moment is our best hitter. When the team is healthy he has a shot to be their backup 3rd baseman which is more than anyone should have expected when they acquired him.

Frankly I am surprised Andujar is back so soon and not at all co rodent he will remain healthy enough to avoid surgery. So DH’ing him makes sense especially until Stanton and Hicks are back. When the team is at full strength there realistically isn’t a spot in the lineup for Urshela except when someone gets a day off.

I believe he’s skilled enough to back up at 1st and/or 2nd as well, though he lacks experience. He is only 27, so the bat could be real... But like you, I want to see it sustained longer than 75 or so AB...
