Father says David Ortiz has been shot, wounded
Former Boston Red Sox slugger and Dominican star David Ortiz was shot and wounded at an entertainment center in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, his father told ESPN's Enrique Rojas.
"They called to tell me that David is injured and that they took him to a medical center, but they did not tell me how he is or exactly where he was transferred," Leo Ortiz said via telephone from the Dominican Republic.
"At the moment, everything is confusing. I'm trying to find out where they took my son," Mr. Ortiz added.
According to a report from Dominican TV station CDN 37, Ortiz was shot in the leg.
A person who was at the scene told ESPN that Ortiz was wounded by a man, who is being detained, while he was in the "Dial" club in the eastern part of the Dominican capital, and that Ortiz was transferred to the Corazones Unidos clinic, which is located in the center of the city.
WTF is going on. This is terrible.

Life is so crazy. I also hope he’s okay... Living large can be dangerous...So much to wonder about how it happened but in the end, you just want him to be okay and hope that the story doesn’t get ugly...

Now I’m reading that he was shot in the back and a Dominican TV host that was with Ortiz caught the same bullet in a leg. Someone got off a motorcycle and shot Ortiz at near point-blank range. Sorry, I have no clue how to post links on this site from my phone...

Red Sox legend Ortiz stable after shooting in DR
Ortiz's media assistant, Leo Lopez, told ESPN's Enrique Rojas that Ortiz is stable but still in intensive care.
"Doctors say he is out of danger, but he is heavily sedated and will be in intensive care for the next 24 hours," Lopez said.
Lopez, a veteran reporter, said the operation lasted six hours and was performed by three doctors, led by Dr. Abel Gonzalez. The team had to remove part of Ortiz's intestines and colon, as well as his gallbladder. Ortiz suffered liver damage.
"Doctors say that David is out of danger, thank God," Ortiz's father, Leo Ortiz, told ESPN. "What they have told me post-op is that the doctors believe he will recover quickly."

There's some blurry footage of the shooting floating around the internet. It look more like the shooter was trying to hurt Ortiz more than commit a robbery.

I know he was born there but the Dominican Republic would not be my choice of where to live if I had the money he does. Or period.
