OK inger….I suppose you will deke me out of this one by involving some arcane and specious "rule" that you have just made up….Bob Lemon was the best-hitting pitcher I ever saw....I looked at his numbers he had a 43....does he count?

That is not entirely fair. He made them up a week ago and modifies them as necessary

He made them up a week ago and modifies them as necessary my take on inger is that he the most honest and trustworthy person in the world in anything other than baseball.....on baseball things he is slippery..... It’s actually the opposite...Baseball is: My religion My food My personal pornography My heart My soul My nourishment My addiction And besides all that, gosh darn it, I like it...

we'll see if he is trustworthy on baseball, as he says he is.....OK inger, does Bob Lemon make it?.... I hadn't Even thought of looking at pitchers until now. Lemon does qualify. Since pitchers don’t bat as many times as the rest of the hitters, it’s sort of a separate category. I suspect we can find more pitchers that any other position, simply because of the small sample. Lemon’s 177 in 1947 is indeed 43 points better than the 134 he posted two years later...

He had a 115 OPS + in 110 AB as a pinch hitter, but only went 5 for 31 when playing center field...

Don Drysdale came to mind. He had two seasons in which he hit 7 HR, but was otherwise not a good hitter. Those good seasons were 1958 and 1965, far apart. But they only varied by 31 points of OPS, 141-110. Yet, he never had any other season with an OPS greater than 60, even though he hit a total of 29 HR...He usually batted below .200...

I didn't see a lot of Mort Cooper, but he was a good hitter....old-timers told me Walter Johnson was a good hitter....

I think what we’ve been seeing is that really good hitters often had multiple really good seasons. It seems the best candidates are not always good hitters, just guys that had a good year. I was surprised when 🐜hony found Pajl O’Neill... it seemed he was too good to only have one super-elite year...

"I think what we’ve been seeing is that really good hitters often had multiple really good seasons." They wouldn't be really good hitters if this was not the case.

"I think what we’ve been seeing is that really good hitters often had multiple really good seasons." They wouldn't be really good hitters if this was not the case. Exactly. I thought of (and looked up) the year that Bert Campeneris hit 22 HR, and found that he didn’t qualify because he had another season where he hit for a high BA that drove his OPS +. It’s an odd project, with unexpected results with that OPS limitation...

You search mechanisms should be players who died after their first season...
