Its amazing. In the last two weeks we lost Torres, effectively, Voit, EE, Hicks, and Sanchez and still won 9 in a row. No other team in baseball could do that Of course not. No other team in baseball had those players at the same time to lose... The Dodgers would be the only team that could survive that a rash of injuries like that, since they have such crazy depth.

your grandfather sounds like a real man to me.....do you know (approximately) the year of his birth? I bet he had a stereopticon as well....and a set of cards to view.....big thing to do when the conversation waned, and before it was nap time after family Sunday dinners... Well thank you Utah. I idolized both of my grandfathers. The one who had the Red Foley album was born in 1892. I don't know about a stereoptican, but he did have a collection of silent films. Big fan of Harold Lloyd and Clara Bow (ooh la la), as I became as well. I remember he also had records by The Ink Spots and Mills Brothers and a group called Somethin' Smith and the Redheads. And the Carter Family, if you remember them. Wow, thanks for giving me a chance to talk about my grandfather. And when were your grandparents born if you know? My father was born in 1877, 15 years before your grandfather, which emphasizes what a virtual youngster you are.... My paternal grandfather was born in 1843 in Moravia, Czechoslakia….he was a son of a third wife, and worked in the family business, which was farming and operating a saw mill....Father left for America when he became able age-wise to do that...He said that there was little inheritance to be obtained by staying, because of the number of heirs....so he left from Bremen Germany on a steamship that was built in 1885 in Scotland...I have many church records 0f the small village, and also the Ellis Island record of his legal immigration. My maternal grandfather was born in Sweden, and I know fewer details about his life...he came to Amrerica as a single man...met my grandmother who had immigrated as a single woman, and they were married in Duluth, and moved to Nebraska as farmers...

Hey guys, guess what, Russ is wondering again whether the Yankees need better starting pitching for the playoffs! Isn’t that interesting? It’s only the hundredth time he’s raised it, and at least as many times he’s ignored the answer but brought it up again! So fun, right? We both repeat the same things over and over again. Russ, to be fair (and more than fair), you proclaim yourself a contrarian and take pride in ruffling feathers to do what you consider to be a favor to the forum by raising post counts. You do so proudly. Then, when you get called at that it’s your feathers that get ruffled. You let me get away with sh*t all the time because I’m such a lovable guy, but there are some others that rub you the wrong way. You think you have a thick skin, perhaps you do. Maybe you should add a shell. We should all remember that when a problem follows us around it just may be our fault. Don’t make me stop this car, young man...

Interesting story. You're definitely Middle America in your roots. Funny, my paternal grandfather also came over from Bremen. It was a big launching point. My maternal grandfather, the Red Foley one, was descended from Scots who came to Maryland in the 1630s. Sounds like you run about a generation ahead of me. Which is why you saw Gehrig and DiMaggio and I didn't!!

What a treasure to know so much about your family history. I never met any of my grandparents, which is probably why I’ve never investigated my heritage. I’m certain my maternal grandparents had passed away by the time of my birth, and since I never met my dad until I was twenty... and have no idea when his parents passed except that they had been gone many years before I met them, well... I did take flowers to my father’s step mother’s grave for a few years when he became unable to do so. It was an honor for me to make the 80 mile drive from my house to do so when dad was suffering from brain cancer but still aware. To all: if you have grandparents, treasure them. Parents, too. Time is short...
