My father was born in 1877, 15 years before your grandfather, which emphasizes what a virtual youngster you are.... My paternal grandfather was born in 1843 in Moravia, Czechoslakia….he was a son of a third wife, and worked in the family business, which was farming and operating a saw mill....Father left for America when he became able age-wise to do that...He said that there was little inheritance to be obtained by staying, because of the number of heirs....so he left from Bremen Germany on a steamship that was built in 1885 in Scotland...I have many church records 0f the small village, and also the Ellis Island record of his legal immigration. My maternal grandfather was born in Sweden, and I know fewer details about his life...he came to Amrerica as a single man...met my grandmother who had immigrated as a single woman, and they were married in Duluth, and moved to Nebraska as farmers... Interesting story. You're definitely Middle America in your roots. Funny, my paternal grandfather also came over from Bremen. It was a big launching point. My maternal grandfather, the Red Foley one, was descended from Scots who came to Maryland in the 1630s. Sounds like you run about a generation ahead of me. Which is why you saw Gehrig and DiMaggio and I didn't!! about a generation ahead of you...probably so...I am nearing my 92nd birthday, which I will celebrate shortly (very shortly) after the Yankees win the WS this year Oh how you would have loved DiMaggio.....what a player!....he was made for baseball and baseball for him....

What a treasure to know so much about your family history. I never met any of my grandparents, which is probably why I’ve never investigated my heritage. I’m certain my maternal grandparents had passed away by the time of my birth, and since I never met my dad until I was twenty... and have no idea when his parents passed except that they had been gone many years before I met them, well... I did take flowers to my father’s step mother’s grave for a few years when he became unable to do so. It was an honor for me to make the 80 mile drive from my house to do so when dad was suffering from brain cancer but still aware. To all: if you have grandparents, treasure them. Parents, too. Time is short... For sure, Inger. Oh man, that's tough that you never got to know any of your grandparents.

We both repeat the same things over and over again. Russ, to be fair (and more than fair), you proclaim yourself a contrarian and take pride in ruffling feathers to do what you consider to be a favor to the forum by raising post counts. You do so proudly. Then, when you get called at that it’s your feathers that get ruffled. You let me get away with sh*t all the time because I’m such a lovable guy, but there are some others that rub you the wrong way. You think you have a thick skin, perhaps you do. Maybe you should add a shell. We should all remember that when a problem follows us around it just may be our fault. Don’t make me stop this car, young man... I don't take pride in being a contrarian nor do I deliberately say things to rile anyone. I say what I believe to be true. Few others agree with my take of things, but I don't disagree to disagree. Nor do I make personal references to others because they disagree with me. I understand others don't share my views and don't expect them to.

Young at heart you are. Definitely from the Big Band era. They say it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing.

Some games you get beat and others you don't can't get a break. Two plays difference and this game would be tied

To paraphrase you from some long ago posts about baseball defense, one cannot count that which never happened. In life we cannot miss that which we never knew. I truly did not mourn for not having my father there as a boy, for I had never had a father. I do wonder now how my life might have been different, but I still don’t dwell there, nor do I mourn that lack... Sometimes we must simply accept...
