Kaybli, you are correct that there are no excuses. Sadly, Nixon is far from alone among whites from that era. I’ve mentioned before the things that I grew up hearing. At that time there was still a lot of “conditioning” to overcome. Many people of that era learned to change their thought processes as they matured, as I did.
I would hate to be held accountable for the things I said. Did, or just believed before I allowed myself to be educated as a young man. There are many who “improved” their behaviors, but didn’t fully change their internal systems of belief from that old era. Some never budged, and are still as evilly imprinted as ever.
So, if Nixon made some comments, then that is shameful and sad. If he learned to accept in later years, if he allowed himself to adjust his attitude and be educated, then good for him.
There is also an element of shame that a person that was in Nixon’s trust at the time has chosen to reveal information that seems to have been stated in a private moment. She doesn’t say if she disputed the information at the time, or what she believed.
What we need to do is to allow the horrid past to wither away, and to focus on today. There are still bigots in our society. There probably always will be. To reduce response to them would be to reduce their efficacy. Sadly there are multiple facets to bridging the gap. Hopefully all that suffer from both the ownership of bigotry and the pain of being chastised or disincluded by those people can work together to narrow the gap.
Thanks for listening. Love and respect all people as I know you do. The love and respect will be returned to you many times...

I know nothing of the history of Nixon, so it's actually giving me something to do reading all this... I made a New Years Resolution to read more starting this year. I am a terrible reader (when it comes to books). I have so far read a biography of George Washington (it was an 817 page beast) and a book called "The Founders View on the Right to Bear Arms" (which was a little dry but really interesting in understanding the Bill of Rights in general). Now I have moved onto a bio about John Adams...I am going to try to work through one biography of every US President. Will certainly take me a while bc I read slow and dont get a chance to read every night. I think it will be a good way to get a sense of how the country started and progressed and changed throughout history. What I meant to say at the end here and forgot lol...was that I expect when I get up to Nixon it will be particularly fascinating being that hes such a complex and polarizing figure. Definitely curious to learn more about him, among many others, but that will be a few years away at my pace. I have so many books sitting in my "book drawer" (we dont have room for a nice book case yet, which I am dying to buy lol)...theres this new book about 'The Wire' that I am going to read next that is supposed to be great (its called "All the Pieces Matter")...Ill report back on this one bc I know we have some Wire fans here. Also an Arnold Palmer bio, Joe DiMaggio, 1776 (a classic), The Federalist papers and a bunch of books about golf and the mafia. I tend to purchase books a lot faster than I can read them [img alt=" " class="smile" src="//storage.proboards.com/6828121/images/cYJDdrfMoRBryreIqHCt.gif" style="max-width:100%;"]

Who is your favorite author and/or favorite book? That is a really good question, Im not sure if I even have one. The guy who wrote the Washington bio, Ron Chernow, is so great. I will definitely be getting more of his books (his latest is a 1000 page monster about Ulysses S Grant). Being our age I was of course a Harry Potter junkie but JKR is def not my favorite. Ive also read 2 books of the Dark Tower series but Stephen King but never read the remainder so thats on my list and suspect it may become my favorite if I ever get around to finishing the series...Ive always liked King a lot even though hes quite a kook (I guess you have to be to write books like that).

My favorite author is Hunter S. Thompson and my favorite book is The Autobiography of Malcolm X. Let me know how that book on The Wire is. If you say it's good, I'll pick it up. The Wire is my favorite show of all time.
Have your read The Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire series or do you watch the show?

I watch the show...think its great. I read the first book and started the second a few years ago but gave up. Its really a tough read. I promised myself I would revisit it if he lives long enough to finish the series. If he doesnt finish it I probably wont read them. Funny thing about Game of Thrones I once heard...GRRM grew up down by the docks in Bayonne, NJ very poor. He would sit out on the docks and look at this "far away land" all the way across the water. As a kid if felt so far and unobtainable but he had an avid imagination so he concocted that it was this mythical place. That far away land was Staten Island. Westeros is basically Staten Island.

I love LBJ for his Civil Rights work but I hate him for escalating the Vietnam War.

I need to read more books and study American history more. I know more about early Western Civilization history than American History. As for you Kaybli.. I read Fear and Loathing like 3 times in High School... I lived that book... I mean, loved that book lol

Ill respectfully disagree on this one (surely unsurprisingly). This is far-left propaganda.
