Clayton Kershaw became the 117th pitcher to win 200 games last night. He is a jaw-dropping 200-88 for his career, which as a .694 winning percentage is the highest of any pitcher with at least 200 Ws. Right now the incomparable Whitey Ford is second at .690. As with Pedro Martinez when he temporarily held that title, I am confident that even a brief decline phase will restore Whitey to his rightful position at the top.
I remember having a conversation with JWild when Pedro was threatening the Chairman's position, and we foresaw that he would hang around just long enough to fall behind His Whiteness. Kershaw is a first-ballot HOFer without question, but we need him to pitch long enough to fall to at least .689.

Kershaw is a first-ballot HOFer without question, but we need him to pitch long enough to fall to at least .689. It would help if the Dodgers decided to stink for a while. Maybe we can get Dome hired as their GM and get them on the six-year rebuilding program. There was always a lot more emphasis on number of wins than deserved. Especially today there should be a lot of attention on “avoidance of losses”. If a guy starts 33 games and he’s 8-3, he’s pitched 30 non-losses on the year. (To be clear, he’d have to pitch his 5 qualifying innings, and if the bullpen loses the game it would still be a non-loss for the pitcher… perhaps we should change our attitude about wins as well and charge pitchers with non-win. Now it’s getting a bit too deep in here, so I’ll quit while I’m not too far behind. I don’t want to be charged with a non-win on this post.)… 🙊 🙉 🙈

--Do Me: The Dodgers couldn't meet my $$$ --Salary & Benefits that I required. They said they had never heard of such Benefits being requested...
--Do Me: Tequila and I have the PERFECT TRADE = We trade Torres to a team for one of their prospects lefty pitches (doesn't have to be a top ten prospect). BUT, BUT, BUt, they have to take not only Torres, but also Hicks and Donaldson. We will sweeten the deal by paying HALF of their remaining salaries for 2023. And if they want more we will throw in Inger as a new poster on their Team Board. Inger will be allowed to continue to Post here.

Ozzie Smith/ 0 MVP/ 76.9 WAR
Amazing to think that high school team mates could be HOF together.
Eddie Murray played alongside Smith at Alain Leroy Locke College Preparatory Academy (formerly Locke High School in Southern California. Murray was inducted to the Hall in 2003. Smith was voted in the year before.
Smith won every NL GG from 1980 to 1992. The only SS playing in 2023 with as many as 4 GG is SFG’s Brandon Crawford.
In 1987, despite not hitting a home run all year, Ozzie was only blocked from the MVP by Andre Dawson’s make good contract year when Dawson hit an uncharacteristically high 49 HR…

Paul Molitor / 0 MVP / 75.7 WAR
Molitor’s birthday is 22-Aug-1956 so he was 40 at the end of the 1996 Season. That year he banged out his personal high in hits, 225. It was the 3rd time he’d led the league in hits. The previous high by a quadragenarian was the 207 H collected by Sam Rice in 1930.
In 1991, Molitor clipped the mitt of Craig Biggio and became the only player ever awarded first base on catcher’s interference in an all-star game.
On June 5, 1989 Molitor was the first batter to hit in Sky Dome in Toronto. Leading off for Milwaukee, Molly doubled off Jimmy Key. (See how I sneak these other names in here?)…

Lou Whitaker / 0 MVPs / 75.1 WAR
Whittaker’s first and last MLB HR were walk offs:
1st HR = 28-Jul-1978 off SEA’s Enrique Romo. His last HR = 13-Sep-1995 off MIL’s Mike Fetters. Whitaker hit an additional 6 walk-off HRs during his career.
This got me thinking, which always comes with a measure of danger. Whitaker hit 244 HR and 8 were walk offs. That means that .0328 of his career homers were of the walk off variety. While it doesn’t sound like a record or anything, I’m thinking it’s a decently high percentage.
Mantle had 12 regular season* walk off home runs, or .0224 walk off percentage. I would think a very high number of HR, like Mantle and his 536 would make it hard to achieve a high percentage of walk offs because there would be many hit in the early or mid innings, but the subject matter has me intrigued.
When Whitaker was a tyke, his legs were growing crooked. The family didn’t have money for orthopedic attention nor the potential require surgery. A small group of family members banded together to make sure his legs were massaged, exercised, and manipulated in certain ways to help strengthen them. It would seem they did an amazing job.
Since Whitaker retired he has concentrated his energy on his evangelical work in the Jehovahs Witness Religion. I’ll leave it up to you what to do if you see him knocking at your door…🤓
* Props to Mantle for his walk off vs. Barney Schultz and the 1964 World Series win. Yes. I saw him hit that on TV. At ten, I knew it was a big deal, but I figured Mantle did that kind of stuff all the time…

Jim Thome / 0 MVP / 73.1 WAR
7 HR in 7 G = 25-Jun thru 03-Jul-2002. The 52 he hit that year are a Cleveland franchise record.
He had 35+ HR for…
CLE in 1996, 1997, 2000 & 2001;
PHI in 2003 & 2004;
CHW in 2006 & 2007…
