I don’t know if any of you recall mentioning my friend Ron Spahn from MD before, but he passed away last Friday morning at 79.
I was driving to a hardware store yesterday afternoon when his daughter called and informed me. It was a sudden passing of unknown origin. The daughter said he had left a phone message with a handy man he often used at 8:22, and she (the daughter) had attempted to call her dad at 9:00 and got no answer. They figure that at at some point in those 38 minutes he may have had a heart attack or some other event.
Ron was an unusual guy who “thinks” he is related to Warren Spahn, and honestly there was a resemblance that makes be believe he was. He could be a real pain sometimes. He had been an only child so was used to being the center of the universe from an early age, but he truly had a good heart and always saw the best in people.
He originally attached himself to me because I had purchased a relatively expensive piece of equipment from him for the greenhouse company I worked for. Unknowingly at the time, I was his first big sale at the company he worked for. He hosted me at lunch and quite a few baseball games through the years, and even spent a week with me in Colorado twice. (Interestingly once with each of my wives).
RIP old buddy. No more of your excited and sometimes unintelligible phone calls to catch me up on your life. They were often odd calls, but it was always nice that you wanted to check up on me and keep our relationship alive. May your spirit soar!

As I said, he was a bit of an odd fellow. He was a guy I don’t know whether to call a friend or an acquaintance. I’m sure he saw me as a friend. He imposed himself on me at times. He often made me chuckle, but not intentionally. A big, sort of clumsy sort of guy. I remember he wanted to golf with me once. He had his own clubs and I invited him to the golf course my company gave us playing privileges on. He must have only played once in his life. After patiently watching him take eight shots to get the ball on the first green, I watched as he attempted a twenty foot putt by hitting the first putt all of about three inches, then hitting the second putt so hard it rolled about 25-30 off the green. Later in the round, a poor soul golfing in a nearby hole hit a ball that was near the green we were playing and as he took a stance to address the ball Ron moved over and stood within about a foot of the guy, who had to ask him to step away to give him room to swing his club. “Oh, I’m sorry, I did realize what you were doing.” 😂😂. It was a long, excruciating day during which encouraged him to pick up his ball and skip some holes because there were other golfers on the course, and we probably let 5 or 6 groups play through. With an honest scorecard he would have probably shot 185… Ah, the memories… 🤓 Through the years I helped him clean up his huge back yard in the spring a couple times when he was getting too old to do it, and his 30 year old son refused to do manual labor ;even though he lived with his dad). He helped me move when I was in KY, and damned near crazy, which was cool of him to do. Oh, hell. I’ll just admit it. He was my friend. I’ll miss the crazy son of a b…gun…

I see I left a word out. When Ron hit that second putt or rolled 25-30 YARDS off the green. Not feet… 😂
