Just when you think you've seen it all. I've seen runners take a shot of whiskey during a marathon but chain smoking?

Coors field isn’t going to get you to the HOF I’d yiu’re a schlep. Helton is a deserving member of the HOF. I think if he had played in YS he would have been a different kind of hitter. More HR’s, fewer doubles. But he’d have still been a big time star…

Mauer is a first ballot HOF but Donnie still can't get in? The had similar careers in where their greatness was cut short.

You knew it when you watched him, as you did with the other two first-ballot catchers Bench and Pudge. And all three of Mauer's batting titles came as a catcher. But I thought it was interesting that Thurman actually played 357 more games at catcher than Mauer. I buy the short-career argument with him less and less. Same with Mattingly. If you're among the top handful of position players in the game over a five or six year period, you should definitely get more consideration than Donnie has. And how were Yogi Berra, Bill Dickey and Roy Campanella not first ballot entries? Mickey Cochrane I sort of understand because when he first became eligible it was in the early days of the Hall and there was a huge backlog and for much of the 1940s they weren't even voting. Although he was probably the greatest catcher in the history of the game when he retired (and still on the short list by any standard.) .

When Oliva was put in the HOF, I did a comparison of their stats and they were almost identical, including games played and abs. IIRC, Donnie actually played more games.

That's always been my argument with both Munson and Mattingly, too. They were 2 of the best all around players in baseball for several years, and in Mattingly's case, he was the best. They should both be in the HoF. Let's add Guidry to the discussion. Top 7 among Cy Young candidates 6 times. Top 3, 3 times. Top 20 in all-time winning percentage for pitchers with over 150 wins.

Guidry averaged 7.1 innings per start and had 95 career complete games.

Great hitting and great defense.
