I have mine with mustard, sauerkraut, and onions. My wife loves sauerkraut...to me it's just rotten cabbage. My dad loves sauerkraut, so every New Years Day our house reeked of it. Certainly one thing I don't miss since I moved to the midwest.

One of my favorite foods from the deli I mentioned is their German potato salad. Like both..."regular" & German. I worked in a semi-German deli that had both...and "head cheese". I dunno...guess that sounds at least a little better than "head meat". "Gimme half a pound of head meat...sliced thin".

Many years ago I was on line at a deli and the woman in front of me must have been having a bad day. She asked the deli man to "slice the ham thin". He started slicing the ham and she told him "a little thicker than that". When he said "you wanted it thin". That set her off. She yelled..."I SAID THIN NOT SHREDDED!"
Bob, I had to go outside for a few minutes because I couldn't hold in my laugh.

Actually, "shaved" was a common request...which is actually very good. I had similar experiences when slicing lox. Lots of pressure to do it perfectly when every slice is subject to approval.

Not in this household. Ruth has a family tradition of pork and sauerkraut, but she knows I’m not participating… The smell is just as bad as the taste.

I've tried to like saurkraut and tried it from numerous restaurants and grocery stores and jars. At best I've developed a tolerance for it. I've given up. It's never what I order. There are much worse foods, unfortunately.

And don’t get me started on Kim-Chee, or however it’s spelled…. Thank goodness she wouldn’t eat that. Former co-workers brought it to work once and I thought the septic tank was backed up into the building…if you’re gonna eat something that smells like human waste, eat it at home…
