I am expecting the Yankees to make a big offer to Cole. He’s the best pitcher that has been available as a FA in a long time, at the right age, and they have both a need for another starter and the budget to make it happen. However it is also quite possible someone outbids for him and/or that he’s using the Yankees just for leverage. Based on past experience they can’t take his word at face value until he makes a decision. But I would be 100% behind signing him even if it meant that they had to move payroll or pass on retaining other players on the roster (as they already have with Didi). Unlike last year’s free agent crop, I do consider him elite talent that could very well be unique for his generation when he’s done. It reminds me a lot of when CC was the best pitcher available.

Events may well prove me wrong, but at least based on what he has accomplished so far, this looks like a big over-pay to me. Going into his age 30 season, Wheeler has a career ERA+ of 100 -- exactly MLB average-- and a WHIP of almost 1.300. I keep hearing about his potential high ceiling, but it's a rare pitcher who gets there past age 30. Maybe $23 million per year is the new normal for a middle of the rotation pitcher. Wheeler looks like someone who should be an elite pitcher. But he isn’t. Reminds me of AJ Burnett.

I hereby announce my free agency. All I’m asking for is $10M for the next 5 years...That’s only $2M per season, folks. Why not take a flyer on me?
I’ll play any position you want me too. I’m especially adept at staying on the disabled list, so you won’t have to use a roster spot for me during the regular season, and will be perfectly happy to not make the all star team, and to go home during the post season so I won’t be in the way.
I’ll surely draw your team some attention if and when you choose to put me in the game as comparisons will be made with Satchel Paige. They will be age comparisons, of course. For that reason, I am expecting the Marlins to call. If all I draw is an extra couple gams, that’ll be a difference maker.
Oh. I also will negotiate...If you only want to do a three year deal, that will work. Maybe even a two year. Make that a one year deal. Or a half season. A half season would be okay. Even just July 4th?...that would be $12,345.68 to play on July 4th @$2M per season...I promise to practice before hand and play really hard...

Andy makes an easy $100K for a little trip and meeting. Maybe $250K if we sign Cole?... Don’t know if that’s true, but I do wonder how that works...

Hilariously enough, 300 game winner Early Wynn was 83-94 before age 30. Dazzy Vance was 0-8 (including 0-3 with the Yankees) before age 31 as he rambled to 197 wins...These are old-time examples of course. Dwight Gooden and Vida Blue both bursted upon the MLB scene well before the so-called prime years. While they remained excellent pitchers, they didn’t acheive the heights expected of them. More thoughts to come. At least, if I think of them... (: gooden had a powder problem that prevented him from staying at an elite level.

I never knew Gooden liked to ski...thought that was Jim Lonborg, circa 1967...

Blake Snell fumes after Rays trade Tommy Pham for ‘slapd–k’ prospect Xavier Edwards
[img alt=" " src="//storage.proboards.com/6828121/images/udcwFqPimnXDtjoTmoVL.gif" class="smile"] What exactly is a slapdick prospect? Is it positive or negative in connotation? More specifically, what does slap-dick mean? Is it more commonly an adjective, like the headline above? Is it also a noun, too? It sounds like an action verb really, but then which of the two words defines the action and needs conjugation to change tense? Is it within the OED?

I'm not familiar with the phrase, but it strikes me as not complimentary. I'm guessing Edwards won't be carpooling with Snell to the stadium. It does give Edwards an instant nickname.
Still, a crap thing for Snell to say about a kid trying to make it. He has to have more self-control than that.
