I’ll be pulling for Greg Bird, but I remain skeptical that he can ever overcome that torn plantar fascia with any finality. In many ways, he was similar offensively to Mike Ford. Patient, takes pitches, works walks, can take the ball the other way, and plenty of power from the left side. Nothing great defensively, but serviceable. Please do not compare him to Ellsbury, as Bird has never had a healthy season or a big payday. I can only imagine the frustration of being so close to your dream and never being able to take advantage. Remember, the Yankees’ medical staff did him no favors.

It would be great to see Bird get well and play well, even if for just a short time. I was always a fan, and your point that he never got his big payday rings so very true. Although with the minimum MLB paycheck. I’d be feeling pretty wealthy... ‘‘tis all relative...

He's been bad/injured for FOUR years. I think he was thought of much more highly than Mike Ford, but that doesn't really matter much. Ford looks like a major leaguer. Bird looks like....a has-been. The single biggest problem the Yankees have, IMO, is Giancarlo Stanton. He's the Iraq War of Yankees history. A colossal waste that never should have happened. They need pitching and a LH bat, or two. Having to lug around $27M on the roster makes making improvements to the team very, very difficult. I think Gary Sanchez is a waste of space on the roster, too, but at least he doesn't cost gazillions.

Never mind that, his bat speed for a couple of years now has been below major league quality. He seems like a nice guy and I wish him well but I am not expecting him to play next season for the Yankees any more than I expect Tino Martinez to.

Man just as soon as Ellsbury contract is coming to an end we now have Stanton for a bunch of years. I thought the Yankees were going away from this kind of signing. I don't mind doing it for a relatively young ace pitcher even if he struggles towards the end of the contract.

Lots of decisions to be made prior to the beginning of next season. Hicks surgery means likely Gardner and Tauchman will be back and there's nothing wrong with that in my opinion. It worked this year. To me the most interesting thing is what happens with Stanton, Voit, Ford, Encarnarcion and maybe Andujar. I'm not a fan of Stanton mainly because of his contract we assumed, that was not his fault, but he is not going anywhere. We have a lot of dh, 1st base type players that can't all be on the active roster. Injuries took care of that last year unfortunately but hopefully next year they won't be as big a factor. Voit's recovery and his ability to return as the player he was before he got hurt will help sort it out somewhat. I believe I read here that Romine was a free agent. It would be great to bring him back. I hope that Sanchez can bounce back from his .232 batting average and his 30% strikeout rate but if not Romine gives us some flexibility at the position. We all have opinions, these are just my un-learned ones.

Ford goes back to AAA to come back for the inevitable injuries. Andujar can split time at DH, 3rd, maybe can learn 1st or LF. Hopefully Stanton can rebound. I'm not as hard on Sanchez as many are. He is a catcher and the bar is set quite low for offense there. If he can keep his improved defense I won't be mad at a low average with all the power he has.

I'd like to see Cashman make a deal for Nomar Mazzara to play LF. The Rangers need a third baseman. Maybe Andujar for Mazzara? I cant stand Gary Sanchez. Even with improvements, he's not a good catcher. And the bat? All-or-nothing hitters make me crazy. Sign Yasmani Grandal. I think Romine signs elsewhere. I didn't like the deal for Stanton when it was made, and I like it even less now. Can they trade him to the Dodgers for something? Voit/Ford is a good rotation at 1B/DH. Signing Gerrit Cole would be huge. Retaining Chapman and Betances would be nice. Will Jordan Montgomery be any good?
