Columbo is my all-time favorite show, although it was billed as movies. I have seen everyone several times each, and don't believe there is a bad one in the bunch. Although, my least favorite is probably "No Time to Die" and my favorite is either "Negative Reaction" or "Any Old Port in the Storm". Hill Street Blues is another one of my favorite dramas. The acting was gritty and excellent! Dennis Franz got the lead in NYPD Blue based on his work in Hill Street Blues. My all-time favorite comedy (not that anyone asked) is Barney Miller. The first episode of "Columbo" was directed by Steven Spielberg and one of the writers was Steven Bochco who went on to create many great TV shows like "Hill Street Blues' and "NYPD Blue". As I recall, "Columbo" was one the programs in the NBC Mystery Movie, which also included "McCloud" (Dennis Weaver) & "McMillan & Wife" (Rock Hudson & Susan St. James).

I told you the story of literally bumping into Peter Falk in Manhattan in the YES forum. Very friendly, gracious guy... Yes, I recall. Always heard that he was just a regular guy, approachable and patient with fans. Especially those who did awful impressions of Columbo.

That's right the first episode when it became part of NBC Mystery Theater, rotating with other shows. That episode was in 1971 titled "Murder by the Book" and the killer was Jack Cassidy who played the killer on 2 other Columbos. Peter Falk actually played Columbo in 1968 in a pilot called "Prescription: Murder", with Gene Barry as the killer. A Columbo episode of The Chevy Mystery Theater, which was the same story as "Prescription: Murder" aired in 1960 and starred Bert Freed (really good character actor) as Columbo.

Not to mention Asta, who has been called "the Lawrence Olivier of canine actors." Yes, those films had plenty of laughs in the most urbane settings. Wow, that was a deep dive to come up with Una O'Connor in BOF. I admit I had overlooked her. If you'd said Elsa Lanchester or EE Clive or Colin Clive or Ernest Thesiger or Valerie Hobson I would have known instantly, so good catch there. She was a wonderful character actress with those buggy eyes and tense disposition. She was also in one of John Ford's best films "The Informer" (also Victor McLaglen's best role) and my favorite version of "David Copperfield" (the one with WC Fields and Lionel Barrymore) and several Errol Flynn swashbucklers. Maria Ouspenskaya was another staple of Universal films, usually playing some creepy fortune teller. William Powell, Myrna Loy and Asta had some of the best on screen chemistry in the history of film. "The Thin Man" series is so entertaining. I've never met you pipps, but I imagine you being a William Powell type, only with an old fashioned instead of a martini. Asta was terrific and had quite a career besides "The Thin Man". www.imdb.com/name/nm1208817/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_1_nm_7_q_astaAsta's feline counterpart is Orangey the cat. He won two Patsy Awards, the animal version of the Oscars. Probably most famous for "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "Breakfast at Tiffany's", but my personal favorite was him teaming up with Ray Milland in the hilarious baseball film, "Rhubarb". www.imdb.com/name/nm1248838/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_7_nm_1_q_orangeyHey Matt, good to see you on here. I've been away myself for awhile, but I haven't seen you around. Maybe I already mentioned this, but when we were in Greece we got into the pleasant habit of having an afternoon Tsipouro at various tavernas. I had never had it before and wondered if you were familiar with it. Thanks for the word on Asta and Orangey! And how nice would it be to live the life of Nick Charles -- remember he inherited his wealth from Nora's family -- well-played!

I remember there was a lot of concern with Susan St. James after Hudson's AIDS diagnosis...

A similar venue. Great rapport between Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers

Just heard the theme song for "Hill Street Blues" yesterday. I was kinda the forerunner to "NYPD Blue". NYPD Blue was my favorite all time drama show. The great Dennis Franz took a break from acting after the series finished it's run and never went back. Dennis Franz was great in the baseball TV series Bay City Blues, it was on only for 1 season.

"Get Smart" - Don Adams (Maxwell Smart) & Barbara Feldon (Agent 99). Don Adams also did the voice of Tennessee Tuxedo.
