Yeah, I was into punk rock early on, especially The Ramones and Sex Pistols. Even though it embraced the exact opposite lifestyle of what I was aiming for. Dead Kennedys, Nervus Rex, any of that. It was never hard to figure out the chords. Not that it's punk, although from the punk era, if you want to hear really limited talent, listen to anything by The Shaggs. Here's an example -- www.youtube.com/watch?v=XR9d4ESlpHYOne of the Fine Arts buildings at Penn is named for Charles Addams, who went to school there and created "The Addams Family" as single panel cartoons for The New Yorker. That song by the Shaggs was uh.... interesting. Never had a lesson.

I picked up this funky song from the Wednesday Addams Netflix Show based on the Addams Family:
Mesmerizing choreography cemented by the expressionless, flat affect. Loved it!

It's nice that The Cramps are getting some love. Featuring Lux Interior and Poison Ivy. "Goo Goo Muck" is one of their better ones. I bought the first album of theirs that I was aware of -- "Songs The Lord Taught Us" -- they described it as psychobilly, a deranged derivative of rockabilly, but Rolling Stone defined their music as garage-trash novelty. Same thing if you ask me. Like a lot of these groups, the album titles were better than the actual music -- "Bad Songs For Bad People" or "A Date With Elvis" -- but they were okay in short doses. They did a recording "Live From Napa State Mental Hospital" that at least at one time was prized by collectors. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame used to display a drumhead that was bashed over the skull of Lux Interior. I knew someone on here would have heard of the song and band! Cool stuff, pipps. I think Pipps has been stumped only once on here, and I don't remember what song/group it was. Amazing!

There were described as a novelty act because a bunch of their songs were 50's and 60's obscure novelty songs reinterpreted like Goo Goo Muck by Ronnie Cook.

Is that a Ferris Bueller reference? I love that movie! One of my favorite too! I used to have it on VHS and watched it over and over as a kid.

I think I found Pipps' Christmas present: Now that is a great video. Shaggs lead guitarist Dot Wiggin couldn't do what that guy does on the Avalon if she took lessons for 50 years. He mentioned Zappa, who would of course champion music like that, but Kurt Cobain also named The Shaggs as his favorite group. I'm guessing there might have been a little tongue in cheek there. Even the seemingly more stable Bonnie Raitt is a fan. You will not be surprised to know that maybe 30 years ago, during one of our annual hockey trips, going from Quebec to Boston, my brother and I detoured into The Shaggs' hometown of Fremont, NH, to see what we might see. The Shaggs consisted of three sisters -- Dot, Helen and Betty Wiggin -- who were managed by their certifiably wacky father. We stopped in to the town hall to explain our mission and asked if any of the Wiggins were still around. A rather exasperated clerk, who had clearly been asked this question before, said that the sisters had moved away but the mother still lived there. She wouldn't tell us where, but the first person we asked on the street directed us to an apartment building a few blocks away. We dutifully trudged over to some modest garden apartments, found the right door, and somewhat nervously rang the buzzer. My brother started to get cold feet and wondered what we would say to Ma Wiggins, but I reassured him I had this one. Nobody answered the door. A neighbor saw us and said that Mrs. Wiggin had gone to the senior center for lunch. I was ready to join her there, but at that point my brother felt it was getting too much like stalking and he wanted to back out. Had I been alone I would have pursued it, and I still regret not doing so. Here's one for the road -- The Shaggs covering The Carpenters "Yesterday Once More." I wonder if Karen ever heard it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BkUFmjz-Ek

You were more on the ball than I was. You're right, they covered lots of 50s stuff in their own style --Little Willie John's "Fever" and The Rock and Roll Trio's "Tear It Up" and even "Jailhouse Rock." Even though they were a US group, they sold more records in the UK, stuff like "Can Your Pussy Do The Dog?" and "Bikini Girls With Machine Guns." The one album I had the cut "Garbageman" got some airplay on low-rated college stations. That album was produced by the great Alex Chilton, lead singer of The Box Tops ("The Letter" and "Neon Rainbow" and "Cry Like A Baby" and "Soul Deep"). I bought the album mainly because of his involvement and because I could not resist the name Lux Interior. A couple of The Cramps broke off to form Nervus Rex, which was also a pretty good band. Lux died quite awhile ago.
