....Michael Murphy, he of "Wildfire" notoriety. On my list of most detested songs... Me too bro. I try not to come down too hard on too many songs because somebody out there will like it and I don't want them getting mad at me. But I never liked that one. I am self-aware enough to know that I like plenty of schlock so I never feel offended if somebody hates a song I like. That's why there's so many different kinds of music.

I'd forgotten about the ban. That explains why after "Sunny Afternoon" in 1966, they didn't have another big single in the US until "Lola" in 1970. Yeah, they never seemed to be as internationalized as The Beatles (or Stones or Who for that matter) and more rooted in the UK. Although they did do "Hollywood Boulevard." Ray Davies is definitely one of my favorite songwriters. Both pointed and humorous and unconcerned about following prevailing viewpoints within the rock world. The Kinks still had singles released like "Dead End Street" and others but their record label Reprise Records didn't find away to properly promote the group except their "God Save the Kinks Campaign." I do remember that 2 FM DJ's in New York City, Bob Lewis and Scott Muni did give "the Green Village Preservation Society" initial 1968 playing on their shows on WNEW-FM and WPLJ-FM, especially Scott who would give us the latest British music stuff on his Friday afternoon program "Things from England." Also Scott did do the premier the Classic Kinks Rock Opera "Arthur" on his show. Scottso and Babalu! Muni was a bit of a trailblazer for progressive rock, which was pretty good for a guy who was pushing 40 when that music came around.

Clipper Well, I can't say it's one of my favorites, but neither is it on my short list of songs that make me ill. Not like say "I've Never Been To Me" or "Feelings" from that same era. How about you?

For years, where he says "we're gonna leave sodbustin' behind" I thought he was saying "leave South Boston behind" and I couldn't get the connection. However, I never thought Jimi Hendrix was saying "Scuse me while I kiss this guy."

"Sugar, Sugar," which was the one of the top single sellers in 1969, ranks as one of the least like songs that I have ever heard. I have been listening to Rock and Roll music since 1957 to Alan Freed, Scott Muni, Murray the K and all of great NYC AM Radio DJ showss. By 1966, I was hooked on FM Rock Radio. A lot of the 1 hit wonders were victims of their Record label deals in US. The Mungo Jerry recently had 50th Annivesary Tour in the UK. The Tremeloes still tour as well as versions of the Searchers do exist. Clipper

....Michael Murphy, he of "Wildfire" notoriety. On my list of most detested songs... He still tours with that song as his headliner. I think he’s in LaVeta, CO every year at a place called “Up Top”, on a mountain above the town. It’s amazing what one song can do for a career. Like when they asked Don McClean what “American Pie” meant. He said: “It means I’ll never have to work again in my life.”…

Rascals "life could be ecstacy, you and me and Leslie." Well, Felix did have a Leslie speaker on his Hammond B-3 Hmm, maybe I'm the one who missed it. There was also Sam Cooke in "Cupid" singing "I don't mean to bother you but I'm in this dress." And that's all I've got.

But my favorite of his is "Castles In The Air"... www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTqi7iEZEWA

The Tremeloes still tour as well as versions of the Searchers do exist. Clipper Wilson Pickett recorded a version of "Sugar Sugar" to prove that he could make any song soulful. The Searchers were one of my favorite British Invasion bands. Great harmonies and arrangements, but mostly known now for just "Needles and Pins" and maybe their cover of "Love Potion Number Nine." They had many other singles that I thought were better than those, like "Every Time You Walk In The Room" or "Someday We're Gonna Love Again" or "What Have They Done To The Rain." Not enough time to tell the story now, but one time I inadvertently became a middle man in getting The Searchers to play at The Knitting Room in NYC.
