I saw Metheny in Santa Monica in 1997. Great show indeed, possibly the best jazz guitar performance I've seen. I've seen a few other great ones -- Lee Ritenour, Jim Hall, Larry Coryell, Pat Martino, Kenny Burrell, Jimmy Bruno -- but he holds his own with any of them. jazz guitar is where i more or less live. though i perform rock (once in a while i'll throw in a jazz tune like "footprints" but the audience thinks i'm tuning up), consider myself more of a "jazz" guitarist. love metheny. seen him over 50 times. never mind guitarist - truly one of the great musicians walking the planet. the breadth of his work is staggering. my absolute hero is pat martino. first heard him in '67 and changed my world. in the late 80's after his whole aneurysm thing (he had to re-learn how to play guitar), had the fortune to become best friends. when he made his ultimate comeback in the 90's, when he played in nyc, he would stay at my apartment. sadly passed a little more than 2 years.
here he is playing one of his most famous compositions: also was friendly with john scofield, john abercrombie and steve khan. even got to play once "for" george benson. did an interview in his house. afterwards told him i was a guitarist and showed him a transcription i had done of one of his tunes. next thing i know he's dragging his amp across the room and giving me his guitar. played for 3-4 minutes before he politely took the guitar and proceeded to show me it's how done for the next 45 minutes . That's awesome bumper. I knew you were into jazz guitar, but I didn't know you were that into it.

Good list! I have a few songs by Dire Straits like Sultans of Swing and Money for Nothing but hadn't heard Down to the Waterline before. Some good guitar work by Mark Knopfler on Down to the Waterline. It's great to see they finally got inducted into the Rock N Roll HOF, long overdue. Doing any Night Driving? Must include Van Morrison's "Moondance." Clipper

I saw Van Morrison in LA at the Shrine Auditorium in the mid 90's. Great show! John Lee Hooker, Junior Wells and Jimmy Witherspoon all played with the band that night. The best part of the show was the Dude himself, Jeff Bridges sitting directly across the aisle from me.

We'll be back in Austin at some time and we'll make it a point to get together. My friend wants us to come, and pet sit his dogs when he goes on a long trip. Then, the Woodford Reserve will be flowing freely.

It would have been a blast! Unfortunately, I have to go back to work tomorrow, or I would have happily made the drive to Austin to meet Matt and his lovely wife Gloria. If Matt makes another one of these sojourns, we'll have to plan to all meet up for a couple days and nights. Austin has great food, live music, comedy clubs, etc. Kay, you will have to serve as our designated driver and the voice of reason at crucial moments as moderator, which we will all agree extends past the forum and into live spaces. You've already made the photoshop of us in the car!

I'll even research the best French Onion Soup in Austin for you! Knowing the six degrees of Pipps, he probably has insider information and contacts to get us the best tables and seats. We'll have to rent an SUV so Inger can wear his sombrero.

Best guitar playing I ever seen is from Luca Stricagnoli. That guy is amazing. My favorite songs he plays are the theme from the movie "Last of the Mohicans" and the song "Bittersweet Symphony."

While my Senior year at Indiana University in the spring of 1979, I saw BB.King and with opening act Guitarist Roy Buchanan perform. I was expecting a good Chicago Blues show from BB, instead saw a Vegas type show. Roy did put on a great guitar blues show. Also, I did see Steve Ray Vaughan play in a small club in North Brunswick, NJ, then I saw him again open for the Moody Blues at the Meadowlands Arena. Both were excellent shows.
