Toto's Africa has a bit of resurgence in past few years with the music streaming world. It was a big hit in the early 80's, when it first came out, but I had forgotten about for years, but now it's back. I just checked on Spotify and Africa has over 500,000 million plays...that's a lot for a 30 year old song. Because of the Weezer remake. I liked Weezer a lot when they first came out but this recent cover record does nothing for me. I never liked them, mainly because my old roommate played that Sweater Song over and over again in our apartment.

A great song and one of the few written by their drummer who came up with the riff on the piano. Best riff and hook. I could sing that all day. It’s one of those #1’s that could be #20,000 the next day but zoom back up the charts the ne t week...I like the story about how it wasn’t really written so much as it just happened...

The king told the boogie man, you got to let that raga drop. One of the great opening lines of any rock song. Inspired by their manager complaining that some of their songs were too long. Led to Strummer rewriting the lyrics Headon had written to go with the music that formed the core of the song. The original lyrics were let's say maybe not so sophisticated.

Nice to hear that song again after so many years, but too bad it’s because he’s no longer with us. Artists never die as long as their art lives...He’s just finding another place to play and song...

I remember him appearing on "Midnight Special" back in the 70s. Always a fun performer.

Oh Such a Night. Another icon gone. He and Leon Redbone (who we also lost within the last few days) did a great version of Frosty the Snowman.

Met him once at the airport. Not a normal human. Lol...Did you ever see the guy the American Pickers picked named “Mongo”. That was hilarious. “Can I fly? Yes. Am I going to? No”!.., That made me think of that...

I loved the guy. Tough week for music with two guys who’s influence On the music I listened to was greater than the music they released. At least to me... Everybody better admit that at some time they were either themselves in the right place but it must have been the wrong time, or that you’ve caught yourself singing Polly Wolly Doodle all the day...

Don’t know why one event can so easily lead me to another. Perhaps I really am ADD, which I claim to be often, though never diagnosed. Here we are with the death of Dr. John, which gets Renfeld to remind us that Leon Redbone passed also. I guess partly because my first name is Leon, I also got to waxing nostalgic for Leon Russell, who passed in 2016, and have been listening to some of his stuff. My thought was that he got right in with John and Redbone in that transition era between blues and rock, and yes. He did. He also had a tremendous influence on and worked with Joe Cocker, who is very high on my list of favorite performers.
A Song For You (covered by many and sung in showers world over) Delta Lady. (Later made into a rock standard by Cocker) This Masquerade (See note after A Song For You) Hummingbird Bluebird Dixie Lullaby (really bluesy) Roll In My Sweet Baby’s Arms And my personal favorite, Tightrope (amazing contrast from his other work)
I find it strange that the word tightrope is never used in the song, but is replaced by tightwire. I get it, rope doesn’t rhyme with fire, but the song could have been called tightwire just as well.
I’m up on the tightwire One side’s ice And one is fire But the top hat On my head Is all you see
Later in the song I love
Like a rubberneck giraffe Ya’ look into my past Well maybe you’re just Too blind ta’....see
Yes, this was a legitimate three-pack of artists. It almost seems that someone pushed the wrong button and Russell was taken too soon. They should have all gone together.
Don’t know if Dr. John has anything to do directly with Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, But I feel his influence in “When You’re In Love With A Beautiful Women”...or is that Leon Redbone... or maybe Leon Russell?... So confusing. They all influence one another in so many ways...

I just remembered that I posted about Dr. Hook a while back when I discovered that many of they’re songs were written by Shel Silverstein... Danged if he doesn’t fit in with this group as far as the transition goes just as well. Before long I’ll have Kevin Bacon in the group, so I’ll slam the brakes on this bad boy and get ready for bed here soon...
