Road trip thru Northern Minnesota. On the way back from Voyageurs NP quick stop in Hibbing to check out the childhood home of Robert Zimmerman*... *Didn't know at the time that Roger Maris was born in Hibbing. Don't know if his childhood home would've been easily found. I doff my National Park Passport in your general direction, Bob, for getting Voyageurs into your travels. It is one of the two National Parks in the Lower 48 that I haven't been to (the other is Isle Royale) but I still hope to work them in. The Midwest is very underappreciated by people on the coasts. Great that you got to Bobby Z's house. In addition to Roger Maris who you cited, Hibbing was also the birthplace of Kevin McHale and Gary Puckett. Pretty good for a small town. I am a huge fan of Dylan, Maris and McHale. Gary Puckett not so much. Too many suggestions of underage sex. There's a big Union Gap between Gary and Kirby Puckett. As Chris Rock once stated, "The only black people in Minnesota are Prince and Kirby Puckett." Do you recall when Danny Ainge was asked to compare baseball legends with the Celtics's players? When asked about Kevin McHale, he said, "I don't know. Did Lerch ever play baseball?"

Similar to Ainge's comment, I think it was Bill Russell who said that McHale looked like he had been put together from spare body parts like Frankenstein's monster. Remember Ainge's fight with Tree Rollins when he bit Rollins on the leg? Chris Rock could be side-splittingly funny.

Didn’t see another person in the park, including on any of the trails we took. It’s doubtful we’ll ever get to Isle Royale and frankly, considering what it takes to get there, it doesn’t seem worth the effort. We have visited Apostle Islands National Lakeshore…not much to write home about, but the small village of Bayfield is interesting and worth a day or two. We had plans to explore the Michigan UP a few years ago, including the Keweenaw Peninsula and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, but those plans changed. I’d still like to do that, but it’s not on the radar right now. A fan of Dylan & Maris, but I’ll withhold my opinion of Kevin McHale in deference to the ban on political talk here.

Gary Puckett not so much. Too many suggestions of underage sex.
Sorry to learn this. I had never heard about it.
I recall former poster GreatFatness dis-liking Neil Diamond because of rumors of “Sweet Caroline” being about Caroline Kennedy.
It’s odd that he picked up on that with out picking up on all of the songs that are built around underage sex in rock and roll and folk history.
“Only Sixteen”
“You’re Sixteen, you’re beautiful, and you’re mine”
“Five Short Minutes of Loving”
“Into The Night”
And on and on…
But it crosses a line a lot when it’s more than just a song…

How would that be interpreted today?

How would that be interpreted today? Forgot about that one. I heard Bobby Vinton’s version of it. At least that one was showing resistance, whereas “Lady Willpower” was trying to sell her on giving in. Into the Night was pretty perverted sounding coming from a 34 year old Benny Mardones. It was a beautiful piece of music though and ascended to the top twenty twice. It’s a bit of an odd law when an 18 year old and 17 year old have been dating for several years and it goes bad, but a lot different when it’s a 30+ year old predating high school girls…

Underage sex is what so many rock musicians have done. Why wouldn't they sing about it?

Sweet and Innocent talks about how the girl is too young for the singer and implores her to come back when she's older. Of course, the singer was a 12 year old Donnie Osmond.

I'm thinking "Don't Stand So Close To Me" by The Police was going there. "Jailbait" by Ted Nugent. The Stones had one called "Stray Cat Blues" that seemed to suggest some illicit emotions. What about "I Saw Her Standing There" by The Beatles? "She was just seventeen -- you know what I mean." Is Paul winking at us when he says that?

Voyageurs sounds great. I do believe it is one of the least-visited National Parks. If you leave the Alaska parks out of the equation, the least-visited NP is, surprisingly, North Cascades in Washington. After that comes Isle Royale, and not far below that is Dry Tortugas NP in Florida, which I guess I have to add to my "never-been" list because it wasn't a NP last time I checked. Like Isle Royale, it is an undertaking just to get there. A seldom-visited one that I really like for the hiking is Guadalupe Mountains NP in Texas. The one NP that doesn't seem to meet the general criteria is Hot Springs in Arkansas, which was one of the early designated parks before I think the NPS hit its stride. More like a National Historic Site perhaps. Like Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford, Yellowstone and Grand Canyon will always be one-two for me. But they're all great. In May we're headed to Great Smokey Mountains NP, which is of course the MOST visited because it's near so many population centers. But we haven't been in awhile, and it's still a beautiful place, we are avoiding Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, and I am sure like you we know how to minimize crowd intrusion. It helps if you naturally are up and about by 5 AM as we are. The ban on political talk is a wise policy IMO. There used to be a political thread on here, and I never once clicked on it because I didn't want to know what people thought on that subject. Although it isn't hard to figure out where highly-political people are coming from anyway. It would be a free-fire zone around here and half the board would hate the other half. We are unfortunately no longer in an age where politely agreeing to disagree is sufficient.

Didn't Jerry Lee Lewis marry a cousin who was underaged? Yep. She was 13 I believe. He disappeared from the airwaves immediately, although he later had a comeback as a country and western performer.
